HEAT TRANSFER (ACME-16602)

ASSIGNMENT – 1

SECTION – A
1. Write short notes on: (2x6=12)
a) Explain thermal conductivity and derive its units.
b) Give practical examples showing conduction with heat generation.
c) What do you understand by fin effectiveness?
d) What is the significance of critical radius of insulation?
e) Why thin films are preferred over thick fins?
f) Explain the physical significance of thermal diffusivity.
SECTION – B
2. A furnace wall is made up of three layers of thickness 250mm, 100mm, and 150mm with thermal
conductivities of 1.65, k and 9.2 W/m-deg respectively. The inside is exposed to gases at 1250°C
with a convection coefficient of 25 W/m2-deg and the inside surface is at 1100°C, the outside
surface is exposed to air at 25°C with convection coefficient of 12 W/m2-deg. Determine:
i. The unknown thermal conductivity ‘k’.
ii. The overall heat transfer coefficient.
iii. All surface temperatures.
3. Derive the general steady state heat conduction equation in spherical coordinates.
4. Hot air at a temperature of 65°C is flowing through a steel pipe of 120mm diameter. The pipe is
covered with two layers of different insulating materials of thickness 60mm and 40mm, and their
corresponding thermal conductivities are 0.24 and 0.4 W/m-deg. The inside and outside heat
transfer coefficients are 60 W/m2-deg and 12 W/m2-deg respectively. The ambient temperature is
20°C. Find the rate of heat loss from 60m length of pipe..
5. A small electric heating application uses wire of 2mm diameter with 0.8mm thick insulation with
thermal conductivity of 0.12 W/m-deg. The heat transfer coefficient on the insulated surface is 35
W/m2-deg. Determine the critical thickness of insulation in this case and the percentage change in
the heat transfer rate if the critical thickness is used, assuming the temperature difference between
the surface of the wire and surrounding air remains unchanged.
6. A very long 25mm diameter copper rod (k = 380 W/m-deg) extends horizontally from a plane
heated wall at 120°C. The temperature of the surrounding air is 25°C and the convective heat
transfer coefficient is 9 W/m2-deg.
i. Determine the heat loss
ii. How long the rod be to be considered infinite?
