СSE 827E Plates and Shell Structures(3 Units)

Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to enable students understand the analysis and
compute deflections of plates and shells
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
(i) explain the theory of plates and shells loaded in plane and plates and shells
loaded perpendicular to plate;
(ii) derive exact solutions for some representative cases;
(iii) compute approximate solutions by the finite differences and the finite
element methods;
(iv)determine influence of element size on accuracy of approximate solutions.

Course Description
Cylindrical bending of plates. Definition of slope and curvature. Effects of various
cross sections during two directional bending. Equations of slope and curvature.
Moments and equilibrium equations. Various methods for solving plates and
numerical examples. Basic equations governing the equilibrium of axi-
symmetrical shells. Curvature, slope and bending moment relations. Membrane
theory for shells of general shape. Multi-span shells.
Course assessment
During the period of study, assessment by course work and final Examination at
end of the course. The course will be evaluated by 60% and final examination
40%.
