INITIAL
THOUGHTS.
My initial thoughts for the brief were how to place-make were to find an interesting place to
do, as otherwise people wouldn’t be interested in the output. However after a lot of research-
ing I realised that it wasn’t the place that mattered only how you re-created the space and or
branded it to something authentic, but also to ensure that the audience is a priority s these
are the people who live in these towns.

IDEA
1. This lead me to my first idea for Identify- To create a boardgame which is inspired
entirely by the abandoned theme park in Chorley-Camelot Theme Park. This idea
would include creating a boardgame map design and logo for the game. More im-
portantly, I believe this idea would create a sense of place towards the theme park
as it merely exists now, with the use of the map/way-finding system which I would
create through illustrations influenced by images I took when I visited and from
memory. But also the idea has the potential to bring more awareness to the way
we treat the environment/planet, as the map will act as almost alternate dimension
which exist in parallel to the human world. It will contains the exact same locations
and infrastructure as when it was heavily populated , but it will be much darker/
colder and eerier. This perfectly captures the horror-set vibe you feel when visiting
abandoned places.

After sketching and drawing up some rough game board ideas, i came to the con-
clusion that game boards now are out of date. I felt I needed to re-create some-
thing more recent and less traditional to meer the client base needs I was after.

When visiting the Manchester print fair we bumped into a guy named
Dave, he did some cool doodle type work which i thought was really
interesting to look at. I think what draws the attention is the lack of
colours and the bold but so busy flat illustrations. Dave said he has
been doodling all his life but it has only really been in the past two
years that it has become a career where he has worked on building
his own business as well as doing freelance illustration work. Dave © 2017 Dave Draws
started his art career in Berlin where he would regularly exhibit on the Online Store by Big Cartel

his career really took off. Recently Dave has started documenting
Manchester city centre and other Manchester areas in a series of

Doodle Maps. These show the well known and less well known areas
of the city in a quirky and imaginative way, interspersed with sprawl-
ing patterns and funny characters. Dave also does a lot of freelance
work with his doodle maps and in the past year alone has done
murals for Unilad, Manchester Arndale and the Renaissance Hotel,
as well as jobs further afield in Hong Kong, Aberdeen and London.

The neighboorhood festival poster is different to most illustrations as it

makes use of a very strict colour palette, not only that but the illustra-
tions look really neat but are also very doodle-like. These are the sort of
illustrations I want to achieve within the gameboard as I want it to look
to a professional quality but without looking too neat and tidy. I actually
couldn’t find the designer behind the poster, but I admire his work very
much.

a local fashion store- Primark. I noticed it was

a map but in the style of doodled illustrations.
What is interesting about her work is that she
uses both 3d and 2d aspects in order to make
certain aspects stand out, like when using
negative space to bring your attention towards
it. Within my gameboard I want to use a similar
technique in order to grab attention.

doing a variety of different things like branding/

When visiting this abandoned place it was tech-

nically illegal, and we did get thrown out by se-
curity twice. But just looking around somewhere
where nobody no longer goes has such an eerie
feel to it, and just makes you think what it would
be like for humans not to exist again. The post

interesting. And evidently a lot of others as look-

of the no entry signs.

I drew out more iconic buildings which would

identify the map and sanction it into different
sections, I would probably go for a cowboy sort
of theme for this one as the wooden buildings
and the style really match the indian cowboy
vibe. I drew this from the angle I captured it from
and from a isometric /above angle which could
be developed into one of the maps.

I did change the style of bulding. The illustration went a little too
realistic for my liking but I found it difficult to do a sketchy version
wthout it looking unprofessional.

For my map I wanted to go for an illustrative styled

map which included abstract and sketchy scenery
like trees. I drew this up and then went over it in
illustrator and really liked the effect it gave.

My second idea was influenced by my research into urbex exploration (abandoned

places) and becoming completely aware of the amount of people who are interest-
ed and so curious about abandoned places across the UK.

Within my research I came across a range of forums which concern themselves

with urbex exploration, which gave me the idea to create a digital website which
would be specifically aimed at urbex exploreres and combine and cover all of the
topics which are raised on forums. The website would give details/images and an
overall ambience of a range of places, I could also explore the possibilities for an
app to be created which would take into account the persons location(UK based)
and show the places to visit near them through the use of a map, within the app
the digital magazine would load too. The advantages of this idea is the fact that
they are so many possibilities.

After advancing my ideas and developing some brief logos and website layouts, I
decided that the idea is too excessive for the brief. Because of the extreme depth
and details I would have to go through to complete and finalise the idea, I feel if
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

I was to carry on that i would lack purpose and a character to create a visually
inspiring pitch for the specific locations I am trying to express. Mainly, the reason
for this is due to unreasonable amount of places which are possible for this idea.

IDEA
3.
My last initial idea which I ended up developing into a final thing was to do paper
cut ous to represent/ and or rebrand a town through the use of a variety of icons
which make up a town’s reputation.

The idea itself was initially thought of after looking at other re-brands and noticing
how much of a modern thing it was becoming. Instead of a city I chose the town
I lived in as I noticed a lot of business’ would come and go from the area and its
reputable comments were no longer.

I felt this idea was my strongest out of the three as it had such a broad traget
audience, rather than singling one group of society out like the rest. Also the idea
didn’t have a theme to which I had to stick to meaning I could experiment a lot with
it based on an ordinary town.

Similar to what I am trying to create the “I AMSTERDAM” project

was a regeneration project by the ad agency Kesselskramer (in
conjunction with Amsterdam Partners) as a promotion for the city of
Amsterdam. It was made by twenty well-known photographers (who
were local to the city) to capture the city from their own perspec- © l AM AMSTERDAM
tives, resulting in a personal and diverse portrait of contemporary Website
Amsterdam. The idea behind and mission of I amsterdam has been
described in the manifesto. The starting point is the Amster- dammer,
city ambassador. I amsterdam is the slogan for both people and the
area. I amsterdam allows people to voice their pride and confidence
while expressing support and love for their city. I amsterdam can be
used in many ways, but must always come from the people; this is
the slogans true power. The people who live here, the people who
work here, the people who study here, the people who visit here and
the people who come to Amsterdam seeking a better future are, in
the end, the best evidence for why Amsterdam is a city of choice. I
amsterdam should embody the spirit of Amsterdam, and therefore
its use will create a city brand recognized the world over. In the end
the re-branding was very successful as the logo celebrated Amster-
dam’s citizens in all their diversity. And the campaign ialso ncluded a
gigantic three-dimensional version sculpture of the logo infront of the
renowned Museumplein. Here, it’s become a Amsterdam monument,
with visitors photographing themselves with the letters on a daily
basis.

have. With paper cut outs I experimented with really showing the
rawness and reality of Mirfield, similar to this exhibition, without the

MIRFIELD

Mirfield is a small town with a big prostitution

problem and civil parish in Kirklees, West York-
shire, England. Historically part of the West Rid-
ing of Yorkshire, it is on the A644 road between
Brighouse and Dewsbury. It’s a small town that
could more than likely need a re-branding due
to it’s reputation going downhill from what i
remember it being.

Within my primary research

and exploring Mirfield as a
whole, i wanted to be able to
portray the town with an array
of colours which sums it up
accurately. To do this, I took
a wide variety of pictures and
colour swatched the colours
which stand out/ repeat a lot
within the town. I felt like it was
important to be able to get a
taste from the town through
colour usage so it is relatable
to those who live there.

COLOUR SCHEME
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT MIA HOGG | UNIVERSITY OF HUDDERSFIELD | U1760963

Using the colour scheme I created in the previ-

ous page I started out again with my second cut
out, already this felt more personal to Mirfield. In
this cut out I preferred the rugged and handmade
feel to it; in comparison to my other which was
very neat and clean. Similar to the last one I
used icons of things which represent Mirfield .
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

I used a variety of cloth, paper and card to

create the final outcome. Also as i wanted my
final to be on billboards promoting the town
I went with the phrase “the town is paper but
the memories are not”- meaning that the town
is fragile with it’s reputation but the memories
are solid and just to reminisce and realise how
great Mirfield is would be a start to help re
brand the town.
