FOREWORD
TEST YOUR ENGLISH is a practical course in two parts, designed for pupils who
have received prior knowledge of English as a foreign language in schools where it is
taught as a key subject. It is intended for classroom or individual use by nonnative speak-
ers of English who are on intermediate or advanced level in their studies of the language.
The chapters of both parts cover the vast majority of language problems that arise in
the learning of the material. The difficulty of the material in these books varies. They
represent a collection of teaching aids to be used while teaching English. Although the
number of these exercises is merely a drop in an endless ocean, they may be taken as an
illustrative sample each of us may start from and teachers can feel free to add any updated
material which is available to any of the chapters. We, in our turn, recognized the need to
offer all pupils the same chance by ensuring them access to more ways of testing.
TEST YOUR ENGLISH course, undoubtedly, addresses the needs of all pupils who
are interested in acquiring top performance and competence, especially when it comes to
final and entrance exams.
The first book is structured in 3 chapters, each meant to test the capacity of high
school pupils to discern between right and wrong in a wide range of sections of Eng-
lish, be its grammar, vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation, their feeling of the language
when it comes to the logic of a text, or the building up of a composition. The chapters,
the order of which reflect a certain gradation in difficulty, focus – each in their turn – on
a selected type of exercise as follows:

Chapter II. Supplementary Texts
for Gymnasium Level Pupils
1. Read the text and say who made jeans and what material they are usually made of.
BLUE JEANS
Levi Strauss came to America from Germany. In 1850 he arrived in San Francisco.
San Francisco is a large city in the United States of America. It is situated in California.
There were many people in California in those days because they wanted to find gold and
become rich. They worked a lot looking for gold and spent much time in the water of the
rivers. They needed strong trousers.
Levi Strauss had a lot of strong material. He hoped people could build tents with it.
So he decided to make special trousers of this material. They were strong and people liked
them. One day Strauss sold all the trousers he had. But they had no colour and became
dirty very easily. So Strauss decided to colour them blue. Now people all over the world
wear blue jeans. They think they are good for work and travel, they are practical.
Now read the statements and say which of them are ‘True’, which are ‘False’ or you
‘Don’t Know’ if they are true or false.

2. Read the text “A Quickly-minded Explorer”, get ready to explain the title of the text
and say what you think of the explorer. Can you name his real profession?
A QUICKLY-MINDED EXPLORER
One night before the sunset a hotel in the centre of the city was on fire. The people
who were inside ran out of the building, they stood near the hotel looking at the fire and
talking: “You know,” one of them said to the man who was standing next to him, “when
I understood we were on fire I didn’t move and continued to sit in the armchair reading
a book for some time. Then I rose and before I came out I ran into some of the rooms. I
was curious about money. And indeed, while I was looking for it I found a lot of paper
money in empty rooms. People don’t think about money when they are in panic nowa-
days. When paper money gets into a fire, the fire burns it. So I took all the paper money
that I could find. No one will be poorer because I took it. I’m going to use it soon. I think
I’ll visit some foreign countries.” “You don’t say so!” said the other man. “By the way,
don’t you know what I am?” “No,” answered the first man. “And where do you work?”
“I’m a policeman.” “Oh!” cried the first man. He thought quickly and then said: “I’m so
152
glad to meet you. And do you know who I am?” “No,” said the policeman. “Oh,” said the
first man. “I’m an explorer and a writer. I always tell stories about things that never took
place.”
3. Read the text “The Day I Came Face to Face with a Tiger”. Say why the tiger attacked
the people.
My name is Tony Russell. Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a
hospital. It was situated high in the mountains. I liked the place very much. The air was
always fresh and there was a small lake which was not very deep not far from the hospital.
I used to swim there early in the morning.
I think it’s important to see as much of a foreign country as you can, but it is difficult
and sometimes dangerous to travel around Nepal. Once I had a few days’ holiday from
the hospital, so I decided to go into the jungle with my friend Kamal Rai who knew a lot
about his own country and was fond of travelling among the mountains.
We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning and left our camp with two el-
ephants. It was hot, but we were wearing shoes and trousers to protect us from snakes. In
the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers.
We got onto the elephants’ backs but Kamal said it was unusual to find tigers in the middle
of the day because they liked to sleep in the daytime, hiding in the grass.
Then suddenly we saw a tiger rather far and Kamal told me to be quiet. We came
nearer and saw a dead sheep in the grass. This was the tiger’s lunch!
We heard the tiger the second before we saw it. What do you think happened then?
Think of your own end of the story and tell it to your classmates.
4. Read the text and say what the tragedy for the captain of the plane was.
The flight from London to South Africa didn’t begin at 9 o’clock. It was a little de-
layed. The plane belonged to the British Airways. It was a big plane with four engines.
At ten o’clock we started. I sat next to Michael. He is a former pilot but now he works
as a lawyer. Michael is my permanent companion in my journeys to Africa. This trip
promised to be very interesting. It included our visits to several villages situated in the
South of the continent. The trip could offer many unusual things.
At eleven o’clock when we were over the British Channel Michael told me he didn’t
like the sound of the engine. Soon the stewardess said that something was not quite right
with the engine again. She told us it wasn’t very important as there were three good en-
gines on the plane and we were “OK”.
However when we got near Africa, the passengers were telling each other that the
second and the third engines didn’t work. We all felt rather bad. At that time we were fly-
153
ing over the land of Africa with its wild animals: tigers, lions, snakes. We were thinking
about death.
Suddenly we heard the captain’s voice on the plane radio: “Ladies and gentlemen, I
have bad news for you.”
I saw that many faces became white. Some people began crying. I felt terrible. The
captain continued in a loud voice: “I have to inform you that England has lost her last
football match against Scotland!”
5. Read the text and say what you think of the young lady.
In the eighteenth century young ladies in Italy usually had very poor knowledge of
history and geography. They hardly ever read a book about America, which was called the
New World, about Christopher Columbus or about his discoveries.
Once a young lady was invited to the King’s palace. There was a ball there. The lady
belonged to a very rich and famous family. She knew a lot of important and respectable
people. She liked to talk to them though she seldom could understand the subject of their
talk. The ministers, lawyers, other important political people knew that the young lady
was neither clever, nor bright but they often talked to her as they didn’t want to offend her
because though she was rather dull, she was nice and pleasant.
Well, that evening one of the guests, a professor of history, was late. The young lady
knew his name very well as his political ideas were very famous. She came up to him and
asked him why he was late. “Oh, nothing important,” said the professor, “I was delayed
by my friend, a professor of history from Mexico.” “Is Mexico far from Italy?” asked the
young lady. The professor smiled and said it was in the New World. “In the New World?”
repeated the lady who was surprised to hear that. “Yes,” smiled the professor again. He
had a good sense of humour, so he said: “Mexico is in the New World which was discov-
ered by Christopher Columbus.”
When the young lady heard this she ran to the dancing hall and shouted as loud as she
could: “Ladies and gentlemen, have you heard the latest news? A new world has just been
discovered by a certain Christopher Columbus!”
6. Read the text “An Ill Turn” and say what Miss Martha’s mistake was. Then do the
task after the text.
AN ILL TURN
Miss Martha Marple was 40 years old but she was not married. She had a shop where
she sold bread both fresh and stale. Stale bread was cheaper than fresh bread. One man
came to Miss Martha’s shop two or three times a week. The man was not young but he
was very pleasant. He wore cheap clothes but they always looked nice on him. The man
was not healthy. He coughed, his eyes were red. Miss Marple wanted him to recover but
she understood that it was difficult for him to go and see the doctor. Doctors and medicine
were expensive but the man Miss Martha decided was poor. He always bought stale bread
and never fresh.
154
Miss Martha liked the man very much. She wanted to help him but didn’t know
how.
Once she had an idea. She put some butter in the stale bread. When the old man
came to her and asked for his usual stale bread she gave him the stale bread with
butter.
The next day the poor man came to the shop. He was very angry. He said he was an
architect. “I used stale bread to take away pencil lines. Last night I finished a plan for a
new office and began to take away the pencil lines. But your butter! ... Now I can’t show
my plan to anybody!” he said.
7. Read the text and say why the boys thought that the old gentleman had won the cat.
YOU’VE WON!
An old gentleman was very unhappy about young boys who lived near him. They
were always noisy, played the guitar loudly and sang strange songs. The old gentleman
thought they had very bad manners and didn’t know the difference between right and
wrong.
One day he was taking a walk in the park near his home when he saw some young
boys standing around a small cat. The old man went up to the boys and asked them what
was happening. One of the boys said to him: “We are having a competition. We’re telling
lies and the one who tells the biggest one will keep this cat.”
The old gentleman thought that was a good opportunity to teach the boys good
manners and to give them a useful lesson. So, he said to them:”I’ve never told a lie in
my life!” When the boys heard these words they shouted: “You’ve won! You can take
the cat!”
155
8. Read the text and say what you think about Tom.
AN EXCELLENT STUDENT
A teacher was asking Tom a lot of questions. But his knowledge was very poor and
he couldn’t answer any of them. The teacher asked him questions on geography and his-
tory of Great Britain and the USA. She wanted to know what parts the United Kingdom
consisted of, what were the emblems of England, Scotland and Wales. Tom did not know.
He looked very unhappy. The teacher then decided to ask him some very easy questions.
“Please tell me, when was the Great Fire of London?” Tom shook his head. He didn’t
know the answer. “Who was the first President of the United States?” continued the teach-
er. She thought it was the easiest question possible. But Tom couldn’t answer it either. He
thought for a long time, but didn’t say anything. The teacher got very angry and shouted,
“George Washington!” The student got up and began to walk to his seat. “Come back!”
the teacher said. “I didn’t tell you to go.” “Oh, I’m sorry,” the student said. “I thought you
called the next student.”
9. Read the text and say why a short answer is called a laconic answer.
A LACONIC ANSWER
The Lacons lived in that part of Southern Greece which was called Laconia. The
people who lived there were very brave. They loved their Motherland and defended it
from all the enemies. Everybody knew that their life was very simple. They tried to follow
the laws of their country and never spoke long. “The shorter the better,” was their rule.
“Never use more words than you need,” was another rule. And nowadays as you probably
know a very short answer is often called a laconic answer, because the Lacons usually
gave such short answers.
In Northern Greece there was a land called Macedonia. King Philip ruled there. He
was not very clever and he was not very brave, but he wanted to become king of all
Greece. So, he collected a great army and soon he became master of all Greece. Only La-
conia was not conquered. Then King Philip wrote a letter and sent it to the brave Lacons.
The letter said: “If I win the battle with your army, I will become your king and ruin your
great city.”
A few days later an answer was brought back to him. King Philip found only one
word in it. The word was very short, and that was “If”.
When Mrs. Green was 62 she went to live in a small village out in the country. There
was only a little shop in the village where she bought bread and some dairy products, but
once a week she began to go into the nearest town to do the shopping there. She never
went to the baker’s or to the grocer’s or to the fishmonger’s. She usually went to a big
supermarket where she could buy all the things she wanted. She went there to buy meat
(pork or beef), vegetables and fruit regularly every Saturday.
After she had visited the store several times, the shop assistant began to smile and say:
“Good morning, Mrs. Brown,” whenever she came to pay for the things she had bought.
At first Mrs. Green didn’t think much about this, but after a few weeks, she said to the
shop assistant one Saturday: “Excuse me, but my last name is Green, not Brown.” The
shop assistant smiled and said she was sorry.
But the following week, when Mrs. Green came to pay for her buyings, the shop as-
sistant said to her: “Do you know, Mrs. Brown, there is another lady who comes to our
store every Saturday who looks just like you.”
Once there lived a king. One day he fell ill. The best doctors came to the palace from
every part of the country, but they could not help the king. He became worse every day.
One day an old man came to the palace and said to the king:
“I can help you. But when you are well again, you must give me much gold: as much
as the biggest elephant weighs.”
The king agreed. In three days he was well. Then the time came to pay the old man.
But nobody knew how to weigh the elephant and the gold. The king called clever men
from all parts of the country to his palace. They thought and thought for three days and
three nights but could think of nothing.
On the fourth day a poor man came to the court-yard of the palace and asked the sol-
diers to tell the king that he could help him. The soldiers struck the man and told him to
go away. They shouted:
“You fool! How can you help the king when the clever men can think of nothing?”
The king heard the noise and asked:
“What is happening? Why are my soldiers shouting so?”
One of the king’s men answered:
“Oh, great king! A poor and dirty man has come into the court-yard. He says he can
help you. The soldiers do not want to let him in.”
The king told his men to bring the poor man back. When he came, the king said:
“Who are you and how can you help me?”
“I am a boatman,” the man answered. “In my boat I carry people across the river. I can
easily weigh the elephant and the gold too.”
The king was surprised.
157
“But how can you do it?” he asked.
“You will see yourself,” the boatman answered. “Tell the elephant-man to bring the
elephant to the river.”
The king told his men to do so and went to the river himself.
When the elephant came, the boatman told the elephant-man to get the elephant into
the boat. Then the boatman put a mark on the side of the boat to show how much it sank
under the elephant’s weight. When the elephant got back on land, the boatman said:
“Now put gold into the boat.”
The king’s men started to bring gold from the palace and put it into the boat. When the
boat sank as much as under the elephant’s weight, the boatman said:
“Stop!”
Then the boatman told the king:
“Great king! I have done it! This gold weighs as much as the elephant.”
Everybody was surprised to see how clever the boatman was.
The king told his men to give him money and asked him to stay in the palace.
A. Arrange the following facts in the order in which they come in the text.
The king’s men brought the elephant to the river.
The king fell ill.
The old man said he could help the king.
A poor man came to the court-yard of the palace.
The men put gold into the boat.
The king asked the man to stay in his palace.
The king was well again.
The elephant-man got the elephant into the boat.
One day the Old Bird wanted to learn if the king was clever. So she sent the king
three gold dolls. All three dolls looked the same but they were worth different sums of
money. The Old Bird asked the king to say which of the dolls was worth the most. The
158
king looked at the dolls for a long time. He thought and thought but he could think of no
answer.
Now there was a young man in that country. He was very poor and worked for a rich
man. But he was clever and everybody knew this. When he heard about the Old Bird’s
dolls, he told the king’s men that he could help the king. The king told his men to
bring the young man to the palace. The young man came, looked at the dolls and saw
that each of them had a small hole in its ear. Then he took a straw and pushed it into
the ear of one doll. The end of the straw showed out of the doll’s mouth. The young
man took the second doll and pushed the straw into its ear. The end of the straw showed
out of the other ear. When the young man pushed the straw into the ear of the
third doll, the end of the straw did not show out at all. The young man thought a little
about this and then said:
“Listen, Oh, king, these dolls are very much like people. The first doll is like a man
who tells others everything that you tell him. Such a man is a bad friend. The second doll
is like a man who soon forgets what you tell him. Such a man is also a bad friend. But the
third doll is like a man who forgets nothing and does not tell others what he must not tell.
Such a man is a good friend. So the third doll is worth the most.”
The king was very happy to hear this clever answer. He sent it together with the dolls
to the Old Bird and told his men to give money to the clever young man.
A. Say to what type of human character (the right column) corresponds the description of
the doll in the left column.

• The end of the straw did A man who forgets nothing and doesn’t tell not
show others what he must not tell.
• The end of the straw showed A man who soon forgets what you tell him.
out of the doll’s mouth.
B. Now say:
• Which of the men is the best friend?
• Which of the dolls was worth the most?
A woodcutter was busy cutting down trees near a river. Suddenly his axe fell into the
water. The woodcutter was very unhappy about it. He was a poor man and had no money
to buy another axe. Suddenly a terrible goblin came out of the river.
“Why do you look so sad?” he asked the woodcutter.
“I have lost my axe in the river. I can’t work now. And I have no money to buy another
axe,” the woodcutter explained.
“Wait, I’ll try to help you, man,” the goblin said and went back into the water. In a
moment he came out again with a gold axe in his hands.
159
“Is this your axe?” he asked.
“No, it is not,” the woodcutter said unhappily.
The goblin smiled and went into the water a second time. When he came out again,
he brought a silver axe.
“Is that your axe?” he asked.
“No it isn’t,” the woodcutter said.
The goblin went into the water a third time and came back with the woodcutter’s
axe.
“Is this your axe, then?” he asked with a smile.
“Yes, yes, it is,” the woodcutter cried. He was very happy. He took his axe and thanked
the goblin with all his heart.
The goblin liked the woodcutter: he was such an honest man. So he gave him the gold
and silver axes as a present.
When the woodcutter came home, he told his story to a man who lived in the next
house. This man was greedy. When he heard the story, he took his axe and ran to the river.
Then he threw his axe into the water and waited.
The goblin came out of the water and asked:
“What’s the matter?”
“I have lost my axe in the river,” the man said. “I am so unhappy. “
The goblin went into the water and brought out a gold axe.
“Is that your axe?” he asked.
“Yes, yes, it is! Give it to me quick!” shouted the greedy man.
And he tried to take the gold axe away from the goblin. But the goblin did not let him
have the axe. He went into the river and never came back.

14. Read the text and say which is better in your oppinion.
WHICH IS BETTER?
Many years ago an elephant and a monkey had a quarrel. The elephant was proud
because he was so strong.
“Look how big and strong I am,” he said. “I can pull a tree down. Can you?”
Now the monkey was proud because he was so quick.
“Look how quickly I can run and climb,” he said. “Can you climb a tree?”
At last they decided to go and speak to the Old Bird.
“We cannot agree,” they told the Bird, “tell us what you think about it. Which is bet-
ter — to be strong or to be quick?”
The Old Bird said to them:
“Do as I tell you and then I’ll learn which is better. Do you see that great tree across
the river? Go and get the fruit from it and bring it to me.”
So they went to the river, but the monkey was afraid of the water.
“Get on my back,” said the elephant proudly. “I will carry you. I am big and strong
and I am not afraid to swim across the river.”
There on the bank stood the tree. It was so high that the fruit was far above them. The
elephant tried to pull the tree down, but it was too strong.
“Wait a minute,” said the monkey proudly. “I can climb.”
He ran quickly up the tree and threw the rich fruit to the ground.
The elephant put it in his great mouth. Then they crossed the river again and gave the
fruit to the Old Bird.
“Now,” they said, “which is better — to be strong or to be quick?”
“Can anybody tell which is better?” asked the Old Bird. “The elephant couldn’t get
the fruit alone. The monkey could not get the fruit alone. But you could get it together.
One of you crossed the river, the other climbed up the tree.”

caught a man, he carried him to his home in the mountains and ate him there. So, he was
also called the Man-Eater.
One night Grendel came to Hrothgar’s castle to see what the king and his men did
there. The door was open and he saw generals and soldiers sleeping in the biggest room.
The monster carried away thirty of the men to his home in the mountains and ate them.
In the morning the king saw that not all his soldiers were in the castle. “Grendel has
been here,” he thought.
When his men learned about it, many of them were afraid.
“We must catch and fight Grendel,” said the king. So, when Grendel came again one
night, there was a very long fight. But the hair of Grendel’s big body was so long that the
soldiers could not use their swords against him. And so he killed some of the men and
again ran away with them to the mountains and ate them.
Hrothgar could do nothing. The monster now came not only to the king’s palace but to
the houses of the people and killed them. Twelve long years passed, and the people in the
land were very unhappy. Hrothgar wanted to give Grendel gold to end the war between
them. But the monster did not take the gold.
There were no dinners at the king’s castle now. People were afraid to walk near the moun-
tains: Grendel watched for them and caught and killed many of them. Hrothgar had many
strong and brave men but they did not know what to do. Grendel continued to kill and kill.
People of other countries heard about Grendel. Beowulf, a great hero, who lived in
Denmark, also heard about the monster. He told his men to build a good ship because he
wanted to go to King Hrothgar and help him and his people. When the ship was ready,
Beowulf took fourteen of his bravest soldiers with him. In two days they saw the moun-
tains of Hrothgar’s land.
When Beowulf and his men came to the castle, old Hrothgar sat alone in the big room.
He was very unhappy. His men brought the guests to him.
“Here are men who have come from over the sea.” they said. “It seems they are
friends. This general — they call him Beowulf — is a very strong man.”
“I knew Beowulf when he was a child,” said Hrothgar. “His good old father was a
brave soldier. We are very happy to see you, our dear guests.”
“Hrothgar,” Beowulf answered, “I am happy to see you too. Stories about Grendel have
come to me. The bravest and the most clever of my people asked me to come to you because
they know that I am strong. And now I am ready, alone, to fight Grendel. I have learned that
this monster fights without a sword. So, I’ll fight with him without a sword too.”
“Grendel has killed many of my best soldiers,” the king said. “We are very unhappy
about it. I know you will kill the monster. Stay here in my castle for the night. Be brave
and watch for Grendel. “
With these words King Hrothgar walked away.
162

1. What was the other name of the monster?
2. How many soldiers did Beowulf take with him?
3. Did Hrothgar know Beowulf?
4. How did Beowulf want to fight with Grendel?

Beowulf and his men were alone. Beowulf lay down in the big room and waited for
Grendel. He did not sleep.
Then Grendel came from his mountains. He could easily see the castle, bright with
light. He walked up to the door and opened it. A terrible light like fire came from his
eyes. In the big room of the castle he saw a group of sleeping soldiers and laughed aloud.
Beowulf watched him.
The monster killed a sleeping soldier who lay near the door. He walked nearer to the
table and saw Beowulf. Suddenly Beowulf caught one arm of the monster with his hands.
Grendel felt that this man was as strong as many men. He was afraid now. He wanted to
run away, but he could not free himself from Beowulf’s strong hands. When Grendel and
Beowulf began to fight, the castle seemed to jump up in the air and come down again.
Beowulf’s men struck Grendel from every side with their swords but it was all nothing
to the great monster. Grendel fought and fought but he could not free himself from Beo
wulf’s hands. At last Beowulf tore the arm out of Grendel’s body. Grendel cried aloud and
ran away to his home in the mountains.
163
In the morning Beowulf together with Hrothgar and his men rode into the mountains
where the monster lived. They rode and rode and at last came to the monster’s big castle.
Beowulf went into the castle alone. In one of the rooms he saw a big sword on the
wall. He understood that it was a magic sword. He quickly took it down and with that
sword he killed the terrible monster. He cut off his head and brought it to his friends.
The soldiers shouted with joy when they saw the great hero come out of the castle. He car-
ried the monster’s head by the hair. After a short rest they all rode back to Hrothgar’s castle.
The next day everybody came to the biggest room in Hrothgar’s castle to celebrate the
monster’s death. Beowulf put up the head and the arm of Grendel on the wall of the big
room. As the guests sat down at the table Hrothgar said:
“Grendel has made the life of our people very unhappy. Now you, Beowulf, the best
of men, have done what we could not do. You have become my son now. We shall re-
member you always.”
Beowulf was very happy to hear such words. At supper he sat near Hrothgar between
the two sons of the king. Hrothgar gave many rich presents to Beowulf and his men: beau-
tiful horses, gold and silver. There was much music and singing far into the night. There
was peace in the land for the first time in many years. Nobody was afraid and everybody
slept well that night.
