•I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners

•5 Basic Massage Stroke


Discussion:

•Massage – is a method where the


superficial soft parts of the body
are rubbed, stroked of, knead or
tapped for remediation, aesthetic
or hygienic purpose.
BASIC MASSAGE STOKES
EFFLEURAGE – ‘Effleur’

•‘gliding stoke’ applied by


fingers, palm, knuckle or
forearm. The beginning,
connecting , ending
strokes.
Variations:

•Raking
•Ironing

•Alternate
•Nerve Strokes
Petrissage – ‘Petrir’

•‘kneading stroke’-
circular kneading
movement is applied
with the tip of the thumb
or three fingers.

•‘ rubbing strokes’ or
sometimes heating strokes – it
requires pressure on the skin
while it is being move over
the underlying structure.

•‘ tapping strokes’ or
striking strokes- comprise
all manipulation of sudden
blow-like contact with the
body of client in rapid
succession as percussion

Vibration
‘vibrating strokes’ or shaking
movements- manipulating the
muscle with the use of fingers
and palm .
*Shaking is much bigger and
coarser movement and produces
shaking of the muscle
*vibration are fine movements
that merely produce tremor.

Reminders:

•Wash and sanitize your hand before and


after massage service
•Do a simple warm up exercises while
waiting for the client.
•Seat the client comfortably if it is chair
massage, or in a comfortable bed if it is
in lying position.
• Have a short interview to gather information
on the clients health history.
• Always smile, be courteous and gain the
trust of your client.
• Maintain proper posture while doing the
massage strokes.

V. Assignment

• Motivation: Follow the Directions.


• 1. Try to reach your back with your left/right
hand.
• 2. Press your back using your pointer and middle
finger or palm with light to moderate pressure in
circular movement for 10 seconds. Repeat 3 times
• 3. do the same on the other side
• 4. take a deep breath and hold for a second then
release. do it 3 times.
Enrichment activity/ Assignment

• 1. Practice the different variations of Effleurage


strokes for at least 2 -3 members of the family
at home. Ask for a feedback after the massage
and write it in your journal.
• 2. Bring the following materials and supplies:
body oil, towel, face mask and sanitizer.
• 3. Browse to the internet the procedure on how
to perform the different variations of other
basic massage strokes: petrissage, tapotement,
friction, vibration.
