Peking opera is somehow
familiar to me.
Do you have any idea what is
done in Peking Opera?
 The performers of Peking Opera
are acting while singing.
Correct! So, what do you think is
our topic for today?  I think our topic for today is all
about Chinese Peking Opera.

Precisely! Our topic for today is

all about the Peking Opera of China.
Will you describe Peking Opera?
 Peking Opera is a traditional
theater art form of China. It is
based on Chinese history,
folklore and contemporary life
which combine music, vocal
performance, pantomime, dance,
and acrobatics.
We also have roles and characters
in Peking Opera. What are those
characters from the activity that
you’ve done?  The characters in Peking Opera
are Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou.
Who is sheng?
 Sheng is the main male role in
Peking opera
Who are the characters of Sheng,
will you enumerate and give the roles
of those three?
 Xiaosheng actors are often
involved with beautiful women
by virtue of the handsome and
young image they project.
 Wusheng is a martial character
for roles involving combat.
They are highly trained in
acrobatics, and have a natural
voice when singing.
 Laosheng is a dignified older
role; these characters have a
gentle and cultivated
disposition, and wear sensible
costumes.
Who is Dan in Peking Opera?
 Dan refers to any female role in
Peking opera.
Who are the female characters
of Dan?
 Laodan- old woman.
 Wudan- martial woman.
 Daomadan are young female
warriors.
 Qingyi are virtuous and elite
women.
 Huadan are vivacious and
unmarried women.
What can you say about their
facial expressions and make-up?
 They have different facial
expressions and make-up
according to their roles.
Great! So, going back to your
activity, what are the remaining
characters that are not yet mention?
 The remaining characters are
Jing and Chou.
Will you identify the role of a
Jing in Peking Opera?  Jing is a painted face male role
who plays either primary or
secondary roles. This type of
role entails a forceful character,
which means that a Jing actor
must have a strong voice and be
able to exaggerate gestures. The
red color denotes loyalty and
goodness, white denotes evil,
and black denotes integrity.
How about the role of a Chou?
 Chou is a male clown role. The
Chou usually plays secondary
roles whose name also means
"ugly".
Okay. If we have those
characters in Peking Opera, what do
you think does a Peking Opera
performer utilize?  Peking opera performers utilize
four main skills and these are
the song, speech, dance-acting
and acrobats.
What is the meaning of colors in
Peking Opera Masks/Make-ups?
 Red - devotion, courage,
bravery, uprightness and loyalty.
 Black - roughness and
fierceness
 Yellow - fierceness, ambition
and cool-headedness
 Purple - uprightness,
sophistication and cool-
headedness
