Fire Risk gap between L&FS engineering and finances.
We assist its clients in transferring results from risk
We undertake fire risk assessments to ensure that the
risk assessments comply with the risk management
requirements. A systematic and structured
assessment approach will be applied to evaluate and
reduce the fire risk to a tolerable level.
The assessment of the Fire Risks to occupants of a
building and other people in the vicinity of a building
will be evaluated to protect that those people are safe
from the risk of fire and its effects.
Means of Egress Analysis
Risk analysis techniques and software are employed to
identify hazards and define consequences in terms of
life safety exposure, business interruption, and
property damage. Fully quantitative risk‐based

Exhaust plume dispersion
We have undertaken many exhaust plume dispersion studies using
the CFD approach. Whether the exhaust gas is from a turbine, a
compressor or a diesel engine, and whether the installation is a
new‐build or brownfield facility, CFD can be used to predict the
behavior of the dispersing exhaust plume for selected wind
conditions to assess the risk of exposure (for example, in terms of
toxicity or elevated temperature) of personnel and equipment to
the exhaust gases.
Helideck environment and CAP 437 compliance
CAP 437 outlines the criteria applied by the UK CAA when
assessing the suitability of the environment around offshore
helideck landing areas. It is also widely adopted outside the UK.
There are three criteria relating to the region above the helideck:
the turbulence environment, the temperature rise above
ambient and the concentration of flammable hydrocarbon
accumulation. We use the CFD approach to assess each of the
three CAP 437 criteria, to demonstrate whether the helideck
environment is compliant, or to identify whether any operational
restrictions may be required.
Explosion dynamics
We use the CFD approach to predict the deflagration dynamics
following the delayed ignition of an accumulation of flammable
hydrocarbons.
When undertaking explosion simulations, it is necessary to capture
the effect of small‐scale congestion within the facility, since this
contributes to turbulence generation and, through the Shchelkin
mechanism, the associated acceleration of the flame front.
Detailed information about the small‐scale congestion, however, is
often not available at the time of the simulations. We use the
anticipated congestion method and has developed the ACEGEN
software to incorporate congestion into CFD explosion modeling.
9
Probabilistic explosion modeling in accordance with NORSOK Z013
When quantifying design accidental loads (DALs) for structural design, We use the probabilistic approach
set out in the NORSOK Z013 standard. This approach requires three separate CFD studies to be
undertaken: assessment of background ventilation patterns under normal operations; simulation of the
discharge and dispersion of flammable hydrocarbons following a release event; prediction of explosion
dynamics following a subsequent (delayed) ignition. With an understanding of the wind frequency for the
site and the release frequencies for the installation (typically compiled as part of the QRA), the CFD.
Predictions are compiled into a set of exceedance curves which describe the explosion loads in terms of
their predicted frequency of occurrence. The DALs corresponding to the permissible frequency are then
simply read from the appropriate exceedance curve. We have completed a number of probabilistic
explosion assessments and has developed the EXCGEN software to automate the underlying CFD process
workflow and the generation of the exceedance curves.

Subsea gas releases and bubble plume simulation
In the event of a subsea gas release, the released hydrocarbons may cause a hazard at the surface in terms
of the formation of a flammable cloud or loss of buoyancy to vessels operating in the vicinity. This risk at
the surface will depend upon the mass flow rate at the
release, the duration of the release, the depth of the water
column and the prevailing wave and tidal effects.
In the event of a sustained release, a bubble plume will
form and rise towards the surface. In the event of a pulsed
release, which may be the outcome following the release
from a finite inventory of hydrocarbons, the risk of hazard
at the surface is significantly less than compared to a
sustained release with the same mass flow rate.
We have recently undertaken CFD studies for an EPC
contractor with safety concerns following a possible
dropped riser event and the CFD predictions were used to demonstrate that the associated risk at the
surface is minimal.
Separator vessels – separation
efficiency and sand accumulation
We use the CFD approach to predict the
multiphase flow behavior within separators and
other process vessels. The fluid mixture, typically
comprising gas, oil, and water, is introduced into
the vessel at the inlet device. The dispersion
behavior of liquid droplets entrained within the
gas phase, and of gas bubbles entrained within
the liquid phases, is then simulated to predict
the efficiency of the vessel in terms of the
degree of liquid carry‐over and gas carry‐under.
By introducing sand as a fourth phase it is also possible to consider how sand may accumulate within the
vessel and how this might impact upon the vessel’s efficiency. If sand is allowed to accumulate, the cross‐
sectional area for flow within the vessel is reduced, causing the flow to accelerate. As a consequence, the
flow residence time within the vessel and the associated efficiency of the vessel may be reduced.
11
FLOW ASSURANCE
We have undertaken a wide range of flow assurance
projects using a combination of simulation
approaches. For simpler one‐dimensional scenarios
considering the dynamic behavior within long
lengths of pipeline, for example, tools such as OLGA,
LEDAFLOW or our own FAST suite may be
appropriate. For scenarios where local effects due
to more complex three‐dimensional geometry is of
interest, CFD and/or FEA may be the tools of choice.
Our experience includes the following application
areas:
hydraulic analysis of pipelines – the assessment of flow regime, liquid hold‐up, slugging
propensity/frequency, liquid surge, wall shear stress, temperature, condensation rate, corrosion
thermal assessment of complex three‐dimensional geometries to assess heat losses during normal
operations and cool‐down times following the cessation of flow – this is important for hydrate/wax
avoidance and the associated design and optimization of thermal insulation
pigging operations
erosion due to solids carried by the flow – the location of erosion hot‐spots and the rate of erosion
over field life
compressible flow and Joule‐Thomson cooling effects – low‐temperature qualification during start‐up
and assessment of associated thermally induced stress
valve behavior – pressure‐loss CV curves during steady operation and simulation of dynamic valve
closure
flow‐induced vibration (FIV) – vibration/structural loading/fatigue life assessment due to flow‐
induced loading
positioning of sampling probes in accordance with ISO 3171.
12
HYDRODYNAMICS
We use CFD to assess hydrodynamic flow behavior. Application areas include:
dynamic wave loading upon fixed structures and floating vessels
green‐water/white‐water assessment of the probable risk of green‐water entering the topsides of an
offshore facility and the associated impact upon personnel and equipment, and mitigation strategies
to reduce green‐water risk
vortex‐induced vibration (VIV) – vibration/structural loading/fatigue life assessment due to loading
induced by external vortex‐shedding flows
scour prediction – to assess the risk of seabed scour around a subsea structure due to the dynamics
of the flow past the structure, determine the scoured profile of the seabed and propose mitigation
measured to reduce the impact of scouring upon the integrity of the structure.
Subsea hydrodynamic stability –
overturning and drag/added
mass
We have recently undertaken CFD studies to
consider subsea hydrodynamic stability
issues for the Cygnus development in the
North Sea. The analysis predicted the time‐
varying surface pressure across the wetted
surfaces under a transient wave and current
loading which, when integrated across the
entire surface, provides the forces and
overturning moments experienced by a
submerged object.
The predicted forces were compared with approximations using the Morison equation such that drag and
added‐mass coefficients could be determined. The comparison showed, however, that for complex
shapes the Morison approach may be beyond its range of validity and that CFD should be used directly.
