Assignment 1

I select the area to measure water supply in the red frame

because the activities around water sources cause water
pollution in the physical, biological and chemical.
- Cattle farm :
The main problem of waste water form Cattle farm is
divided into two parts which are animal feces and food
waste. Waste water form Cattle farms is characterized by
high levels of biological oxygen demand (BOD) , high total
suspended solids (TSS) and Microorganisms that may
contaminate in animal dropping such as Shigella,
Escherichia coli, and Salmonella), viruses (such as
rotaviruses). Waste water form cattle farm also cause has a
strong smell.

- Plastic manufacturing :
The waste water from Plastic manufacturing including
high biological oxygen demand (BOD) and Fat oil and
grease (FOG).
- Land fill :
Waste water from the dump (Leachate) are highly
polluting. Landfill that receives a mixture of municipal,
commercial, and mixed industrial waste excludes
significant amounts of concentrated chemical waste,
landfill leachate may be characterized as a water-based
solution of four groups of contaminants which are
dissolved organic matter (alcohols, acids, aldehydes),
inorganic macro components (common cations and anions
including sulfate, chloride, iron, aluminium and zinc),
heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Cu and Hg), and halogenated
organics ( such as PCBs and dioxins.)
- Bulk petroleum storage :
Oil and chemicals substance may contaminate and
leak into the water supply

Determine what information you would collect and analyze to

complete the susceptibility determination.
1.The physical characteristics of the water source indicate
the quality of the river. Survey of physical characteristics of
water resources ,can be measureby
-Smell
-colour
-Turbidity
- pH
In addition, we should explore width depth Flow direction
and flow velocity of the stream to support the monitoring of
water quality.

2. The Chemical parameters that should be measured are:

- Total dissolved solids
- Iron , Manganese, Copper
- Total hardness as CaCO3
- Nitrate as NO3 and Nitrate as NO2
- Toxic substances from landfills such as Inorganic
mercury , Lead ,Arsenic ,Cadmium ,Cyanide, PCBs and
dioxins.

3. The Biological characteristics of the water source that

should be measurement are :
- Escherichia coli
- Salmonella spp. (Salmonella species are transmitted via
the fecal-oral route. The most common mode of transmission is
ingestion of food or water that has been contaminated with
human or animal feces.)
- Protozoa, such as Giardia sp. and Cryptosporidium sp.
- virus
Ideally, drinking-water should not contain any
microorganisms especially Escherichia coli provides definite
evidence of faecal pollution. Although the water treatment
process is disinfected with chlorine, chlorine is not effective in
disinfecting Protozoa such as Giardia sp. and Cryptosporidium
sp, which live in goat feces.
