Creating Shared Prosperity
The world's largest clean technology competition is supporting Pakistani entrepreneurs (SMEs and startups) with the best
ideas that deal with today's most urgent energy, environmental and economic challenges through a competition based
approach. The Programme focuses on fostering emerging and commercially viable clean technology innovations to fuel green
industrial growth in the country, while small and medium-sized enterprises are provided with training, mentoring, and access
to potential investors.

Given the significance and contribution of small businesses to the creation of jobs and the overall economic development of Pakistan, UNIDO is implement-
ing "Global Cleantech Innovation Programme for SMEs and Startups" focusing on the promotion of innovations in clean technologies, funded by the Global
Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by its strategic partners, Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST), National Productivity Organization
(NPO) & Pakistan Institute of Management (PIM).

The Programme is currently running in 10 countries, including Pakistan, and aims at developing a sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem. It supports both
clean technology innovations of SMEs and startup entrepreneurs to enhance opportunities to achieve sustainable commercial success.

The model follows Cleantech ecosystem approach which, among others, includes close engagement with the private sector, scaling up the momentum for
sustainable industrial development and strengthening the policy framework as required. It works closely with diverse stakeholders across the spectrum
such as private sector, public sector, academia, industrial associations, provincial governments, potential investors, partner agencies, financial institutions
and autonomous research centers in the country. By tapping into this broad network the programme has established an effective awareness campaign as
well as a platform to mobilize interest among targeted beneficiaries ensuring adequate buy-in of SMEs.

Innovative Industry for Climate Change
Neil Buhne
Resident Coordinator of United Nations in Pakistan
In Pakistan and in many countries around the world, we see the emergence of more and more people, particularly young
women and men, having a stronger voice and innovatively engaging more on issues of poverty and exclusion. These changes
are also linked to the emergence of innovations in clean technologies by entrepreneurs and civil society, as part of dramatic
shifts in the development landscape accelerated by new technologies and new financial models.

For the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be met, these developments are encouraging, as deliberate and calculated
investment in testing new ways of triggering change, and as important ways to ensure that “no one is left behind”.

By introducing the culture of Investor Connect to Pakistan, UNIDO is promoting Innovations in clean technologies. I am hope-
ful that GCIP Pakistan will be able to utilize energies of many young innovators in right direction, eventually leading to the
launching of new cleantech startups and companies based on such innovations. By organizing the first of its kind Investor
Summit in Pakistan, UNIDO has been able to bring together more than 500 incredible innovators with powerful businesses
for funding. This is an important step in the right direction.

Just last year, a startup “Zaheen Machine” made their debut by presenting their idea on the platform that UNIDO provided
and which led to securing business from SNGPL. It embodies the spirit of the new generation of South Asian start-ups that
embrace indigenous technology to provide sustainable solutions to local problems. Their product has resulted in reduction of huge amount of carbon emissions in
thousands of households where the burning of natural gas is reduced by 5 hours per day during 5 months per year. The GCIP competition provided a great way to increase
awareness of the product and acquaint the innovators with other entrepreneurs at local and global level. This is a big achievement.

The GCIP is focused on enhancing and emerging cleantech startups as well as the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and the policy framework in Pakistan. We have so much
to look forward to by making the creative landscape conducive for innovation and entrepreneurship in Pakistan. Doing that is an important element, in making more likely,
the goals that Pakistan has set for itself, and committed internationally to meet, for progressing as more prosperous, cleaner and innovative country in future.

Paving the Way for a Prosperous Pakistan through Innovative Industry
Esam Alqararah
UNIDO Representative to Pakistan
Since the advent of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2016, UNIDO has focused its work on achieving SDG 9,
which involves building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innova-
tion. This goal includes development of human capital through better employment, better-paid jobs and better management
of our natural resources and of the environment.

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a specialized agency of the UN that strives to achieve shared
prosperity and environmental sustainability around the world through the promotion and acceleration of inclusive and
sustainable industrial development. UNIDO’s mandate echoes SDG9, but also aligns with many other development goals,
including those related to poverty eradication, creating full and productive employment, protecting the environment, and
achieving gender equality. In order to allow for a better life and prosperity for the billions that are still excluded from a digni-
fied human existence, the world needs to grow its industries in an inclusive and sustainable manner.

UNIDO Pakistan is engaged in several industry, environment, economics, food agriculture and trade related projects address-
ing climate change mitigation and adaptation. To combat climate change, the organization is promoting market-based adop-
tion of modern biomass technologies including gasification for heat and electricity generation in small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs). Biomass gasification is the process of producing energy-rich gas that can be used to supply heat or to run
engines and generators, providing clean and reliable electricity for villages or factories

UNIDO is implementing “Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP)” in Pakistan, which is designed to foster innovations in the areas of Water Efficiency, Renewable
Energy, Waste to Energy, Energy Efficiency, Green Building and targets SMEs as well as startup entrepreneurs to maximize their opportunities to achieve sustainable
commercial success. The broader idea is to develop a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem. I am incredibly proud of the fact that, under this programme, Pakistan won
Global Category Awards in Cleantech innovation at Silicon Valley, USA for 2015 & 2016.

At UNIDO, we strive to foster efficient and result-oriented solutions to promote economic growth while enhancing social inclusiveness and ensuring environmental
sustainability. Our vision is of a prosperous Pakistan where everyone is part of this inclusive growth process.

Integrated Energy Solutions for Inclusive and Sustainable
Industrial Development
Alois Posekufa MHLANGA
Project Manager, GCIP Pakistan
Through several completed and ongoing projects, the Government of Pakistan and UNIDO have joined efforts to foster clean technol-
ogy innovation and entrepreneurship and promote the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and
services in the industrial sector of Pakistan.

As a UN agency primarily focusing on industrial development, UNIDO has unique technical capabilities to address industrial develop-
ment needs through a variety of highly specialized services promoting social inclusion, competitiveness and environmental sustain-
ability. At present, UNIDO has a sound energy portfolio in Pakistan mostly financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which
focuses on safeguarding the environment while fostering industrial development.

The project “Promoting Sustainable Energy Production & Use from Biomass in Pakistan” supports the use of biomass as an alterna-
tive energy resource that can strengthen the industrial sector and help reduce the energy crisis and cater to the ever-increasing
energy demand in the country. The project promotes the market-based adoption of modern biomass conversion technologies –especially gasification- to power small and
medium industries (SMI) and electrify rural areas where most of the biomass resources are available. By doing so, UNIDO has been providing policy advisory services for
biomass promotion, setting up biomass-based pilot units in industrial installations and carrying out a series of awareness and capacity building initiatives.

As part of the Government’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, the project "Sustainable Energy Initiative for Industrial Sector in Pakistan" seeks to
pursue industrial development while minimizing the environmental negative impacts. As such, the project catalyzes the market-based adoption of renewable energy
technologies and energy efficiency in industries in Pakistan. It has been specially designed considering the local circumstances including the high cost of energy, the energy
supply shortages and the recent prices fall of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Through a series of interconnected activities, the project is supporting
the industrial sector in adopting renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies to improve their productivity and competitiveness while reducing their environmen-
tal footprint.

“Global Cleantech Innovations Programme (GCIP)” is a flagship initiative for SMEs and Startups in Pakistan which includes the world's largest clean technology competi-
tion. The programme focuses on suporting clean technology startups and SMEs with innovative ideas on how to address the most pressing energy, environmental and
economic challenges. Through a competition based approach, the programme has been offering training, mentorship, and access to potential investors.

The programme is focused on enhancing both emerging cleantech startups as well as the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and policy framework in Pakistan. A competi-
tion-based approach is used to identify the most promising entrepreneurs across the country, whilst a local acceleration programme supports, promotes and “de-risks”
the participating companies and connects them to potential investors, customers and partners.

Creating Jobs, Advancing Sustainable Growth
Dr Shahina Waheed
National Project Coordinator, GCIP Pakistan
Through new collaborations across disciplines and sectors, the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) has been able
to build the national capacity for clean technologies along with a supportive local entrepreneurial ecosystem for SMEs by
developing clean and resource synergistic initiative in Pakistan. Through the growing community of national and international
partners, selected Pakistani cleantech entrepreneurs are connected to the potential partners in other GCIP countries such as
Malaysia, South Africa and Turkey etc. At the Cleantech Global Forum in Silicon Valley USA, the most innovative cleantech
entrepreneurs come together to forge networks; meet potential partners and investors from around the world.

GCIP Pakistan commenced in 2014 and attracted 81 applicant teams during its first cycle of the call for awards, 28 were
declared as semi-finalists and four teams won prizes ranging from 25,000 US$ to 30,000 US$, and the national winner was
sponsored to participate in the Global Forum at Silicon Valley in the USA.

The programme completed its second cycle in 2015 with great success. It attracted 332 innovations, out of which 55 best
SMEs and start-ups were supported, as semi-finalists, through extensive mentoring, training, access to investors and showcas-
ing opportunities. The five national winners of the call were awarded with prizes ranging from US$ 20,000 (National Winner)
to US$ 15,000 (3 Prizes), with an additional prize of US$ 15,000 for the “Most Promising Woman-led Business” in the categories of energy efficiency, renewable energy,
water efficiency and waste to energy. As part of the package, the winners further participated in the global competition held in Silicon valley, USA and won the ‘Global
Category Award’ in the category of Waste to Energy. The second cycle saw a nearly fourfold increase in participants, doubling the number of teams that qualified for the
semi-finalist category.

During the third call cycle in 2016, 560 entrepreneurs and innovators in Pakistan applied for the Cleantech Competition, while 82 of them made it to the semi-finals, and
received incubation, mentorship and training opportunities. It is important to mention that GCIP Pakistan attracted, not only the highest number of applications both in
the years 2015 and 2016 among all the countries where this programme is offered, but also resulted into the highest number of semi-finalists. The national winners of this
third cycle, along with the best start-ups from each country again competed for the global award in Silicon Valley and won “Global Category Award” again in the category
of “Waste to Energy” as in 2015. Thus, the overall outcome was that two Pakistani startups won global awards in the “Waste to Energy” category at the global competition
held in USA in 2016 & 2017 consecutively.

In order to ensure gender mainstreaming and attracting more women to participate in the competition, a Women Business Growth Centre (WBGC) has been launched, in
collaboration with Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), to serve as a facilitation unit that enhances the ability, mobility, visibility and connectivity of
women entrepreneurs in Pakistan. The Centre is designed to strengthen institutional support services and to deliver improved Business Development and Competitiveness
Services (BDCS) for women entrepreneurs in selected industrial sectors.
