This document outlines a course project assignment for designing a section of an arterial road. It provides the following key details:
1) The road section is projected to carry 19,500 vehicles per day, consisting of 10% buses and heavy vehicles. One bus/heavy vehicle is equivalent to 3.5 passenger cars.
2) The tasks are to determine basic and secondary design parameters, identify design standards for the forest section, and confirm the safety of a proposed horizontal curve connecting two tangents with grades of 5% and -4% that contains a vertical curve.
3) Students must submit their responses to parts A through D by January 4th, 2018.

2019_TR321 COURSE PROJECT PART 1
A section of an arterial road is projected to carry 19,500 vpd during the
design year. The traffic is expected to consist of 10 percent buses and heavy vehicles. The section under consideration is located in a forest and the terrain. One bus/heavy vehicle is equivalent to 3.5 passenger cars on average. Adopted design super-elevation is 6 percent.
Carry out the following design tasks:
A. Determine/summarize the basic and secondary design parameters for the section. [2 marks] B. Determine the design standards to be adopted for the section passing through the forest. [2 marks] C. A proposed horizontal curve with R = 350 m has its BC at km 43+345 and EC at km 43+645 and contains a vertical curve [BVC is km 43+ 355 and EVC is at km 43+635] connecting two tangents with grades 5% and – 4%. The entire horizontal curve is in a 4 m deep cut. Is the design safe? Draw super-elevation diagram and confirm that the section of the vertical curve with zero grade do not coincide with the point on the development of super-elevation where camber slope is equal to zero. [5 marks] D. Outline how you would ensure that the alignment design is consistent. [2 marks]
