Assignment No (2): Horizontal Alignment

1- Draw to a convenient scale the profile of pavement edges (rotation about the centerline)
through the transition from a tangent to a circular curve in the case of using a transition
curve and in the case when the transition curve is not used.
• Two-lane highway with normal crown cross slope of 2 %
• Lane width is 4.0 m
• Design speed is 80 km/hr.
• Degree of curve is 1.725o
• The required super elevation is the equilibrium super elevation
• The maximum relative gradient between profiles of the edges is 0.55%.
Draw a cross section at distance 15 m from the beginning of the spiral.
2- For the shown horizontal alignment of a four-lanes highway segment:

a) Using transition curves, draw the profile of pavement edges from station A to station
D (rotation about the center line) using the following data:
• Degree of horizontal curves at points B and C are 4O and 3.77O respectively.
• Station of point A is 1+500
• Lane width is 3.6 m
• Normal crown cross slope is 2 %
• Design speed is 100 km/hr.
• Coefficient of lateral friction is 0.12
• The maximum relative gradient between profiles of the edges is 0.44%
• Scale of drawing: Horizontal scale is 1:3000 and vertical scale is 1:10
b) Draw a cross section at a distance of 40% of the runoff length.
c) Without transition curves, resolve point a) (rotation about the inner edge)

3- For the previous problem, without transition curves, is it possible to fit a circular curve
(D=4 o) at point "B" together with another circular curve (D=4.5 o) at point "C", at the
following two cases:

|Page-1-
a) Length of BC is 250m b) Length of BC is 300m
4- Draw to a convenient scale the profile of pavement edges (rotation about the centerline)
for the shown highway segment using the following data:
• Two-lane highway with planar cross slope of 1.5 %. LE is the highest edge.
• Deflection angles are 34.7111o and 49.7111o respectively
• Lane width is 3.75 m
• Design speed is 70 km/hr and maximum super elevation is 4%.
• The maximum relative gradient between profiles of the edges is 0.55%.

5- Resolve the previous problem, if the first curve is L.H.S. curve and the beginning point
station is 25+160.
