Assignment 2

1. Calculate the length of a transition curve to be introduced between a straight and a curve such
that 15- cm super-elevation may be introduced over the circular curve. Assume the rate of super
elevation as 1 in 500.

2. Calculate the length of a transition curve to be inserted between a straight and a circular curve
such that a super-elevation of 15 cm over a circular curve may be attained. Assume the rate of
attaining super-elevation as 2.5 cm per second and average speed of the vehicles as 60 km/hour.

3. The maximum allowable speed on a curve is 80km/hour and the rate of change of radial
acceleration is 30 cm / sec2. Calculate the length of the transition curve if the radius of the circular
curve is 200 meters.

4. Two straights AB and BC intersect at the chainage 2635.22m, the deflection angle being 48°
24'. It is proposed to insert a circular curve of 300 m radius with two transition curves, 80 m long at
each end.

Calculate the shift of the main curve, the spiral angle of the transition curve and the chainage at
the point of commencement.

5. The angle of intersection between two straights is 140° . The spiral angle for each transition
curve is 5° . If the radius of the main curve is 400 m, calculate the length of the transition curve and
the length of the circular curve.

6. It is required to join two straights having a total deflection angle 18" right by a circular curve of
500 in radius, having cubic spiral transition curves at each end. The design velocity is 72 km per
hour and the rate of change of radial acceleration along the transition curve is not to exceed 25 cm
/sec . Chainage at the point of intersection is 840.0 in. Assume peg interval along transition carve
10 m, and along circular curve 20 m, calculate the necessary data required for setting out the
curve.

7. During the rough grading phase of construction, you discovered a 12-inch water pipe crossing the
roadway at Station 18+50. The elevation on top of the pipe is 730.92 ft. You have communicated
this information to the project engineer who has asked you to calculate and lay out an equal tangent
vertical curve so that the top of pavement passes 36 in above the top of the water pipe with the
following design elements:

1
Vertical curve beginning at Station 16+50 (Vertical Curve #2)
G 1 = +8.75%
G 2 = -1.50%
A drop inlet needs to be installed at the lowest possible elevation between the beginning and end of
horizontal curve #1 along the flow line.
