Site Organization
Site organization is in two main parts;

 Setting out the site

 Managing the site

Each stage of site organization requires a set of documents/information to facilitate its execution.

Setting of Site
Site layout can be defined as site space allocation for material storage, working areas, units of
accommodation, plant positions, general circulation areas, and also access and egress for deliveries and
emergency services. The building site has to be carefully controlled so that:

 The operatives of construction have the right machinery in the most advantageous position.
 The materials stored with care so that they are readily available and not interfering with
general site circulation.
 Adequate storage spacing for construction materials on site.
 Site accommodation and complete facilities for construction workforce.

It is important to acquire the knowledge of the project site before setting out the site layout. The
knowledge about the project site can be obtained from:

 Site investigation
 Contract Document
 Information from Local Authority

Management of Site

After the setting out of the site actual work commences. Several documents are needed for the purpose of
monitoring and control of project objectives thus time, scope and budget. Others rather spell out rules and
strategies to protect operatives, the environment and to ensure quality standards.
The main items in a site layout design include;

 Building/Structure under construction

 Main equipment (vibrators , concrete mixer)
 Stores and deposits
 Sanitary/ welfare rooms and buildings
 Electric power and water supply

Construction site traffic management

This means paying attention to the key areas where risks of incident and accident are high.

Access points – all entrances and exits should have access points for pedestrians and vehicles.

Walkways – should be kept clear of obstacles, be well-drained and be cleared regularly to reduce the risks
of slips, trips, and accidents.

Movement – vehicle movement on site poses a significant risk of accidents. We should organizing the
building site to facilitate safer movement with minimal risk. Measures we take to facilitate safe
movement should include:

 Separate parking areas for staff and visitors, away or near from the main site.

 Controlled access points.

 Delivery, unloading and storage points close to access points but not within (and definitely not
across) the main site.

 High visibility clothing should be worn by all personnel and visitors onsite.

 Having a delivery plan helps keeping the materials stored on site to a minimum as well as
restricting the amount of personnel accessing the area.

Protecting the public

We should minimizing public risk is of importance when organizing the site. By consider:

Perimeters – all our site boundaries will be secured by fencing or barrier systems which can fulfil the
following requirements:

 Suit the purpose and nature of the site;

 Protect the public from the transfer of on-site hazards, such as all noise and dust;

Access arrangements – access will be during working hours, through security guards.

Minimizing hazards for workers and visitors

Hazard areas will clearly be stated or communicated and this include:

 Excavations

 Falling and moving objects

 Trips, slips and falls

 Use of tools and equipment

 Dust, noise, and vibrations

 Electricity and fire

 Working at height

Storage and waste management

Since there will be movement of materials off the site for disposal as there is onto the site for building
with. Our storage and waste management well organized, ensure:

 Storage areas will be clearly designated and organized by type of material. The design and
construction of each storage facility will be an appropriate match for what is being stored.

 Equipment and tools will be stored and locked appropriately.

 A waste management plan will be in place before work starts and should be organized in compliance
with the HSE guidelines and local environment agency and local authority regulations.Flammable
waste materials will need to be cleared away daily, you can get special cans and bins for these until
they need to be removed from the construction site

 Make sure that there is enough space for skips and industrial bins on the site for storage of waste.

 When working inside of a building will make sure there are enough wheeled bins to allow for
effective disposal of any waste generated whilst working on the inside of buildings.
Welfare

We will ensure that basic needs and requirements of visitors and workers can be fulfilled conveniently
and safely. This means ensuring adequate facilities for:

 Rest breaks and refreshments, including drinking water.

 Changing rooms with locker facilities.

 Toilets and washing facilities.

Although these areas will be at the edge of the site, to minimize pedestrians, work areas in order to
access them.

Administration, compliance, and evidence

Administrative processes will be in place, particularly the legal ones. They will be in place before work
actually starts on site and are work-in-progress documents which need regular updating as work
progresses.

Administrative will include

 Health and safety.

 Risk and hazard assessments.

 Inspection.

 Method statements.

 Training and policies.

 Accident reporting and response procedures.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Workers & Project Visitors:

PPE is clothing or equipment designed to protect the wearer’s body from injury or infection, will be
provided including helmets, goggles, gloves, boots and clothing. Construction crews at minimum will be
urged to wear hard hats, safety glasses, ear plugs, work gloves, work boots.

Construction Debris and Trash Management:

We will make sure there are adequate waste receptacles for any and all debris generated from the project.
All debris will be removed from the active working area daily to prevent hazardous conditions to the
workers.

Equipment Assembly Hardware Organization:

Temporary storage shelves should be erected located in the work area, to be easily accessed by all
workers. A construction table will be constructed to keep site paperwork and drawings organized.

If you have to store materials at a height make sure that guard rails are in place and necessary mechanical
aids such as fall restraints are on hand to prevent falls or injuries.
