EXPERIMENT

To investigate the relationship between Torsional moment and angle of twist of a shaft

Apparatus:
DIDACTEC Torsion of bar apparatus

Theory:-

The objective of the experiment is to investigate the relationship between the torsional
moment, clamping length, and torsional angle of a shaft. Afterward, the proven conclusion is
used to empirically determine the shear modulus of several metals. The data shows that the
torsional angle increased linearly as the length increased. It also showed that the torsional
moment (torque) was approximately the same as the displacement due to the load placed on
the bar. After calculating the shear modulus of the different materials (brass, aluminium, and
steel), steel had the largest while aluminium had the smallest.

Procedure:
 Place the specimen through the chuck and set the test length l at say 300 mm.
 Clamp the specimen as shown in figure.
 Vary the torsional moment as shown in the table and record the dial gauge reading for
each applied load.
