C. The Difference Between Auxiliary Verb and Modal Auxiliary

Auxiliary verb in the cambridge dictionary is defined as "a verb that gives
grammatical information that is not given by the main verb of a sentence". We can mean that
the auxiliary verb is a verb that provides grammatical information that is not given by the
main verb. In other words, the auxiliary verb does not have a literal meaning, it only gives a
marker or gives information from a sentence, for example:

a. I have read a book

b.I don't play badminton today

c.I was watching tv yesterday evening

Nodal Auxiliary in the cambridge dictionary is explained as "a verb, such as 'can',
'might' and 'must', that is used with another verb to express. in Indonesian we can explain that
"capital" is a verb such as can, might, and must that is used together with other verbs to
express an idea such as "possibility" that is not explained by the main verb in the sentence.

Modal Auxiliary in English consists of can, could, may, might, will, shall, would,
should and must. In capital, the words contain literal meaning, for example can means can or
can, may mean maybe, will means will, and so on. These words have a function to show
possibilities, opportunities, needs, obligations, abilities, abilities, and desires that are not
contained in the main verb. In many literature it is called that capital is part of the auxiliary
verb because it functions as an auxiliary verb, that is, it is always paired with other verbs. The
difference is auxiliary verb which consists of be, do, and have does not have an independent
literal meaning, whereas capital has an independent meaning, for example will means will,
must mean must, and so on.

7
CHAPTER III
CLOSING

A. Conclusion

Modal Aulxiliary is a word placed before the main verb to modify the meaning of the
main verb.

The English literature states that the auxiliary consists of (1) be, namely, are, are,
were, were, being, and been (2) have, namely, have, has, having, and had, and (3) do that, do
, does, and did (4) capital that is, will, shall, must, should, would, may, might, can, and could.

So it can be understood that Modal Auxiliary is part of the Auxiliary verb. Then
what's the difference? Auxiliary verbs other than Modal Auxiliary do not have a literal
meaning, for example is, am, are we do not know what they mean, whereas Modal Auxiliary
consisting of will, must, can, etc. they have a literal meaning, for example will, must, and
can. It's just that their function is the same as an Auxiliary verb
