Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the


Development and Quality Assurance Team of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be helped to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.

This module was designed and written for you, dear Junior High School Grade 8
Learners. It will be a great help for you in using modal verbs and adverbs
appropriately. The language used recognizes the varied vocabulary levels. The lessons
are organized to follow the standard structure of the Junior High School K to 12
Curriculum. The sequence of the lessons given will help you to clearly understand and
use the English Language in your everyday communication and lifestyle.

The module is divided into 2 lessons, namely:


● Lesson 1 – Using Modal Verbs Appropriately
● Lesson 2 – Using Adverbs Appropriately

1 Modal Verbs

A modal verb is a type of verb that is used to indicate modality – that is:
likelihood, ability, permission, request, capacity, suggestions, order, obligation,
or advice. Modal verbs always accompany the base form of another verb for having a
semantic content.

As introduced earlier, modal verbs serve as helping verbs in a sentence, and carry
a specific function. Examples of these verbs are can, could, may, might, will, would,
shall, should, and must.

work in one paragraph stating your observation in the sentences. Do your work on
separate piece of paper.

2 Using Adverbs Appropriately

An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even


a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella). Adverbs often end in -ly,
but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts.

KINDS OF ADVERB

Adverb of Manner
 is used to tell the way or how something is done.
She moved slowly and spoke quietly.

Adverb of Place
 indicates an object position in relation to another.
She has lived on the island all her life.
She still lives there now.

Adverb of Frequency
 describes how often something occurs.
She takes the boat to the mainland every day.
She often goes by herself.

Adverb of Time
 tells when, how often, and how long an action happened.
She tries to get back before dark.
It's starting to get dark now.
She finished her tea first.
She left early.

Adverb of Degree
 tells about the intensity of something.
Her father was extremely ill.
The traffic is terribly disgusting.

chicken and patiently let it cook through. She worked fast. I eagerly waited for
my next job, which was to gently sprinkle spices into the soup. But I accidentally
poured in too much cumin. I quietly told my mom my mistake, and she sweetly
told me, as a child, she had coincidentally made the same mistake. Now, I realize
cooking is not as hard as I thought.
