ABOUT THE SCHOOL
School of Building Science & Technology
(SBST) was established in 1982 to focus on the
technology in construction. The school conducts
AICTE and State Government approved full time
10 semesters (5 years) Bachelor’s programme in
B.Tech. (Civil Construction) Hons. and self
financed programmes in Construction Project
Management, Structural Design and
Infrastructure of 2 years duration. All the
academic programmes are recognized by
professional bodies, and have proven their mark
in the Academic and Construction world.
ABOUT ENGINEER'S DAY
Engineer’s Day is celebrated on 15th September
as a tribute to Bharat Ratna Shri M.
Visvesvarayya, on his birth anniversary. Dr. M.
Visvesvarayya, father of Civil Engineering, was a
great Engineer, Administrator, an Eminent
Statesman, Educationalist & a Social Worker. On
this occasion, students of SBST take up a socially
relevant subject to sensitize the students towards
their societal commitment and in the return help
the society. Study is done through a survey
carried out by the student body in & around
Ahmedabad and analysis is done for the same.
The outcome of the study is presented on 15th
September in front of experts consisting of
Officials, Architects, Consultants, Contractors
and other concerned Authorities. For the past
eleven years, School of Building Science &
Technology has been celebrating Engineer's day
with full participation of its students & faculties,
aiming to add to the glory of this Institution.
TOPIC FOR THIS YEAR
“WATER MANAGEMENT AT
CONSUMER - END IN RESIDENTIAL
AHMEDABAD” - Problems and Solutions
NEED
As per Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation
(AMC) Statistical Outline 2006-2007, out of the
total water supply of 643.31 million litres per day
only 3% of water supply is metered for, hence
generating a need to know the exact quantity of
water received at the consumer end. The average
daily water supply in the city is 161.88 litres per
capita per day. Certain amount of this supply is
lost in the form of leakages, thefts and other
unaccounted factors resulting in the reduction in
the per capita supply.
This is the primary reason that tempts the users to
extract ground water resources by installation of
private bore wells thus leading to an overburden
on user expenditures. This has also led to
depletion of groundwater table at the rate of about
2 to 3 meters per year. Furthermore, the high
salinity of ground water causes various health
problems. Thus, a water efficient strategy has to
be facilitated and implemented to overcome these
loopholes.
OBJECTIVES
Quantification of water supply by Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation (AMC) at consumer end,
its consequences and means to reduce burden on
the latter.
SCOPE
 To quantify the water received at consumer
end and compare the same at supply end.
 Suggest guidelines for efficient usage of water
supply.
 The study would be carried out in Residential
Apartments / Flats upto G+5 storeys in
Ahmedabad within AMC limits.
METHOD OF STUDY
Ahmedabad City is divided into five zones and
has a total of 102 Water Distribution (Pumping)
Stations within the AMC limits. Four distribution
stations in each zone will be taken up for the
study and apartments coming under the supply
zone of these stations will be surveyed with
respect to their distance from the distribution
stations. The surveys will focus on the
quantification of AMC water supply reaching at
consumer end and the volume of water drawn by
the borewells existing in the selected sample.
The study will be supported by a literature study
along with the physical survey for all income
groups. Collective inputs from various agencies
i.e. Local governing bodies and Experts in Water
Management shall provide the relevant data to
support the study.
The data obtained from the aforementioned
sources would be analyzed and will lead to
achieving the desired objective. The study will be
concluded and summarized in the form of a
detailed report and a compendium shall be
released to carry out an awareness programme for
the residents of the city.
