Re-design of Phase 3 chowk flyover using high strength concrete.
The re-design of flyover structure using high strength will have different impacts including cost reduction
due to reduction in material and in super and sub-structure. On the flip side it will make elements slender
and vulnerable to buckling, vibrations and fatigue etc. This all need to be investigated in this project.

COMPILATION OF HYDROLOGICAL DATA FOR KP
********************************************************************************
ASSALAM O ALAIKUM! Just wanted to share with you people. See if somebody can supervise the
following projects.

Water Resources
Having a platform at UET, Peshawar, it seems to be important to gather as much of Hydrological data as
possible (from the beginning may be 1947, early or after) so that we can develop hydrological models for KP
using different variables. The compilation of such data in an organized way or at least a start towards such
database could result in more efficient projects etc. as has been done by Michael Church and Kenneth Rood
provisionally in 1981 and then in 1983 by the title "Catalogue of alluvial river channel regime data" at the
University of British Columbia. This database has been used extensively in research related to alluvial rivers.

IDF curves development for KP
Water Resources
Intensity–duration–frequency (IDF) relationship of rainfall amounts is one of the most commonly used tools in
water resources engineering for planning, design and operation of water resources projects mostly in urban
areas. The objective of this research is to consider one of the many important cities in KP for this purpose and
develop IDF curves based on the current database from the Met Office and other related departments.

Evaluation of Rational Formula
Water Resources
Q = CiA is a basic model that is mostly used in urban watersheds. Here, it is desired to critically evaluate this
model considering a small drainage area within UET campus and actually measure discharges for different
rainfall events and compare theoretically with the model and suggest their views.
Seems a simple one that would require discharge measurements using a V-Notch or some other devise and to
select a point of interest near the CED.

Reliability of ACI Code Equation for Calculating the Elastic Modulus of Concrete (ASSIGNED)
Structural Design
The ACI 318 committee has suggested an empirical equation for finding Young’s modulus of elasticity of
concrete which gives reliable results for concrete strength ranging from 2000 psi to 6000 psi. Similarly a
number of other researchers have attempted to improve the already existing model as given by ACI 318.
This research attempts to evaluate the quantified reliability of the ACI Young’s modulus equation for
concrete for materials and environment of Pakistan. The research includes an experimental and analytical
study. The experimental study includes specimen production in laboratory and testing of these specimen
for finding modulus of elasticity as per ASTM standard. The analytical study includes statistical analysis of
the results obtained from the laboratory specimen and ACI 318 empirical model.

Comparative Study of two way slab analysis using numerical model and ACI code approximate
methods (ASSIGNED)
Structural Analysis
Two way slabs supported on beams are commonly used in the reinforced concrete (RC) frames. The analysis
results which is mainly the bending moment and deflection largely dictates the provision of flexure steel in
slabs. However the analysis methods provided by the ACI 318 committee for instance moment co-efficient
methods and yield line analysis methods give approximate values. On the other hand the finite element
based software tools like SAFE uses the finite element method for structure analysis.
This research attempts to better understand the analysis results of two way slabs from both approaches. A
comparative study of the results will be performed.

Assessment and Harnessing of Geothermal Energy: A Case Study
Renewable Energy
There are numerous researches emphasizing the fact that Pakistan is having tremendous reserves of fossils
and renewable energy. However they fail to come up with quantified approaches in many cases.
Geothermal energy use the hot bed rock and the hot springs are the first identification of a geothermal
well. There are various researches emphasizing the fact that Pakistan has huge potential to harness
geothermal energy for power production, however it fails to come up with quantified numbers. This
research attempts to select a potential geothermal field in the northern part of Pakistan and then carry out
the complete assessment and feasibility of its harnessing study along with various variables for instance
cost. It involves thorough literature review, field visits and market survey. The results from this study will be
documented in the form of a proposal to investors and concerned government authorities.
