Box Beam With Transient Load

Box Beam With Transient Load 1 Copyright© 2018 MSC Software Corporation
• Workshop Objectives
– Perform a modal analysis for a linear dynamic model described below
– Know how to create and apply a non-spatial field to a force
– Perform a linear transient analysis for the model
– Know how to customize X vs. Y plots
• Software Version
– Patran 2018.0
– MSC.Nastran 2018.0
• Files Required
– cant_beam_transient.db
• Problem Description
– Model is a cantilevered beam with four .65 lbf*s2/in concentrated masses
applied at the corners of free end of the beam as shown in Figure 1 on the
next page.
– A transient load is applied at the tip of cantilevered beam and is equal to
constant tip force * function of time (f(t)), defined by a non-special field
1*exp(-.35*t)
– Perform both a modal and transient analysis on the box beam model.

• Suggested Exercise Steps
1. Open the file named cant_beam_transient.db.
2. Add points for concentrated mass to the four corners of the box beam at its
free (unconstrained) end.
3. Specify the mass of each of the four concentrated masses as 0.65 lbf*s2/in.
4. Create the load case to be analyzed.
5. Set up and perform an analysis:
• Solution Type = Normal Modes
• Solution Sequence = 103
• Frequency Range of Interest between 0.00 (Hz) to 100.0 (Hz)
6. Attach the results file cant_beam_subset_modal_1.xdb.
7. Plot eigenvectors, translational for the different modes.
8. Create a non-spatial field with the function: 1*exp(-0.35*’t) from t=0 to t=1
with 28 number points and apply the value 0 for t =1.1 and t = 3.
9. Create a time dependent load case which is needed for time dependent
load creation. It is necessary to specify the loads and boundary conditions
under load cases before running analysis.
10.Modify the force vector <0 -10000 0> to include the non-spatial field.
11.Create group with subset of elements as shown in figure 1 and include the
nodes corresponding to the elements in the group.
Box Beam With Transient Load 4 Copyright© 2018 MSC Software Corporation
• Suggested Exercise Steps (Cont.)
12.Post group subset of elements and display the element and the node
labels for the group. Display the entire model.
13.Set up and run the transient analysis
• Number of Desired Roots = 10
• Transient_1c subcase
– Timesteps = 3000
– Delta-T = 0.001
– Modal Damping = Crit. Damp, and 0.025 for both 0.0 (Hz) and 100 (Hz)
– Output request = STRESS(SORT…) = ALL FEM,…
14.Attach the results file cant_beam_subset_elm.xdb.
15.View time dependent deformation results at time 0.154 sec. Next, look at
how the model deforms with time. Then, animate the transient deformation
results with end value of 3 sec and 24 frames.
16.Create XY plot of displacement versus time on the top corner node labeled
Node 44 in figure 1. Create another XY plot on Node 44 and the Node
horizontally across from it (Node 41).
17.Customize the appearance of the graph.
• Change the title to Displ vs. Time
• Change the curve title text to Node 44: Y Displ and Node 41: Y Displ
• Add grid lines and tick marks to X and Y axis.
