Conduct of Refits. Refits of ships are generally undertaken by Naval Dockyards/ Naval Ship Repair Yards and are
systematically planned and executed with the assistance of Original Equipment Manufacturers (if required). Non
technical, man power intensive jobs are generally offloaded to trade through Rate Repair Contracts/ Annual
Maintenance Contracts. Knowledge up-gradation of our manpower is achieved through well designed training capsules
at the OEM premises. Efforts are on to involve private industries to a large extent.

Offloading of Refits. Offloading of refits of auxiliary ships/ submarines is decided based on the refit load on Naval
Dockyards/ Naval Ship Repair Yards. Offloading of refits to DPSU/ PSU/ Private Shipyards is resorted to due to capacity
constraints and dry-dock slots resource constraints at Naval Yards. Offloading of some of the refits not only facilitates
load sharing of Naval Yards but also provides an opportunity to various Indian shipyards to build up their capacity for
repairs/ refits of IN ships.

Support to Friendly Foreign Countries.  DFM is also responsible for providing materiel support to friendly foreign
countries. The Directorate co-ordinates refits of friendly foreign Naval ships at IN Dockyards and all product support
issues of erstwhile IN ships currently serving with littoral navies in co-ordination with other professional directorates at
IHQ MoD(N).
