2022 – 2023 MARITIME COMPANY, DUBAI (3 months)


Consultant - Maritime Transport
Company is active worldwide in the off-shore market and salvage operation.
Specifically, I have been entrusted with the job responsibility to develop
DRY CARGO CHARTERING DESK INCLUDING BREAK BULK AND
PROJECTS. Expand client base in Dubai, other middle eastern countries, Africa,
etc with a focus to trading & operate ships in future.

Shipping Manager
Responsible for providing an efficient and effective logistics solution for the
company’s imports from various countries overseas as well as exports to other
West African Nations. Cargo traded predominantly by the company include Steel,
Bauxite, Chemicals, Fertilizer, and Project Cargo. Areas of activity include SHIP
CHARTERING ( DRY CARGO ), PORT OPERATION, CLAIMS and AGENCY
RELATED WORK. Additionally, I was responsible for managing a tanker vessel
that the company owned and traded predominantly in West Africa. Liasoning
closely with various Government Organizations like NIMASA, NPA, etc was
another important activity associated with management of the tanker vessel.

Briefly, scope of work include the following.

Chartering ( Dry Cargo ) – Checking of market trends on regular basis, locate


suitable ships for in-house cargo ( both exports and imports ), negotiate and
conclude charter party contracts on voyage and time charter, payment of freight
or hire, monitor post fixture of voyage and time chartered vessels, and resolution
of charterparty disputes.

Port Operation & Logistics – Engage in all aspect of co-ordination with ship agent,
terminal operator for estimated time of arrival of the vessel, berthing prospect,
cargo release, negotiation with stevedores, arrange trucks or barges for taking
delivery of cargo, and other associated logistics activity. Primary focus is on
productivity and minimize cargo throughput cost.

Claims – Regularly monitor discharge operation. In case of any damage to cargo


or short landing, immediately submit protest letter to ship owners’, inform
insurance company for joint survey along with owners’ nominated P&I Club
representative, and finally lodge claim for any losses incurred whilst the cargo
was under the custody of the ship owner. Claims concerning stevedore damage
to vessel or damage to hull during berthing has to be taken care of as well.

Ship Agency – Provision of ‘ PDA ‘ to ship owners, advice owners’ with berthing
prospect on daily basis, liasioning with terminals for ensuring berthing on arrival
as far as possible, co-ordinate with Harbour Masters’ Office for berthing, shifting
or un-berthing of the vessel, monitor daily report on cargo operation, and
preparation of ‘ Statement of Facts ’.

Containers - Booking, Clearing & Forwarding of approx 3000 containers annually


into Lagos ( Imports ) from China and India. Likewise, approx 2000 container
were exported to India, South East Asia, USA, and other West African Nations on
an annual basis.

Head [ Chartering ]
Eleven years of ship chartering experience concerning Dry Bulk, Break Bulk and
Project Cargo. My job profile as ‘ Head [ Chartering ] ’ in this company include
expanding existing & developing new business, keeping track of market trends,
propose suitable ships for in-house and third party cargo, voyage estimation,
negotiation with ship owner and finalization of charter party contracts on
VOYAGE as well as on TIME CHARTER. Added responsibility for vessels fixed on
voyage basis involves checking of freight invoice and ensuring payment on time,
preparation of laytime calculation sheet, appointment of draft surveyor (
applicable in case of dry bulk cargo only ), settlement of demurrage or despatch
amount, and resolution of charterparty disputes. On time charter, mainly
supervise post-fixtures including nomination of agents, weather routing service,
P&I Club, voyage instruction, bunker instruction, monitoring speed and
consumption, payment of hire on time and resolution of disputes.

Coal, Iron Ore, Fertilizer, Rock Phosphate, Bauxite, Limestone, Bagged Rice, Steel
and Projects ( Transformers / Reactors / Generators / Machinery ) are some of
the cargoes handled in this company.

Chartering Executive
My role as a ‘ Chartering Executive ‘ in this company was to facilitate/conclude
negotiation process between TRANSCHART ( Ministry of shipping, Government
of India ) and OWNERS as a Broker, preparation/signing of charterparty
contracts on behalf of Owners, post-fixture, preparation of laytime calculation
sheet, settlement of demurrage or despatch amount, resolution of charterparty
disputes, ensure payment on time, and realization of brokerage commission.

Looking for a new challenge so that I can put my cumulative experience to good
use.

Achievements
1. Established the Dry Bulk Chartering Department at ‘ BALMER LAWRIE &
CO LTD ‘ and made it a profitable venture. Fixed dry bulk vessels for giants like
Olam, Vedanta Aluminium Ltd, Man Industries, etc

2. Streamlined ’ Port Operations ’ at Lagos Seaport, and trained operations


staff in all aspects of taking direct delivery from vessels chartered by the
company on to trucks and barges, thereby minimize cargo throughput cost and
reduce damage to cargo on account of multiple handling. Barging was first
thought of and introduced as an alternative means at Lagos Seaport for the
company’s import as well as export of steel cargo, chemicals, etc due to heavy
congestion on the road leading to port.
