CMA-CGM, the third largest container shipping company globally, has concluded its
first shipment from Dharamtar port. It was a milestone completed by the Port of
Dharamtar when it executed its first shipment of 16 TEUS via barge to JNPT.
Subsequently two more shipments were carried out for JNPT.
These export containers, carrying steel coils of a leading steel flat products manufacturer,
were loaded from Dharamtar and connected to the EPIC service of CMA - CGM at
JNPT.
Both the flat products exporter and CMA-CGM have played pioneering roles in initiating
this first shipment and in turn, validating the operational and commercial viability of
transporting containers via Dharamatar. The flat products exporter carries out exports of
up to 600 containers per month and has communicated its intent to divert its inland
logistics operations via Dharamtar.
PNP Port, Dharamtar’s uniqueness lies in transshipment and transportation of containers
using the inland water mode thereby avoiding the landside congestion and congestion
driven expenses. The exclusivity of this service is further amplified by that the port of
Dharamtar, in its entirety, is a custom notified area and also offers state-of-the-art and
cost effective bonded warehousing.
According to a Dharamtar Port official, this concept, which is very popular in Europe and
China, has been introduced in India for the first time. "The distance between JNP and
Dharamtar is 14 nautical miles, as against 60 km by road. Hence transportation by sea is
faster, cheaper and safer."
It is situated along the Amba creek approximately 4km from NH-17. Dharamtar has in its

stuffing of containers and their release for export.
