Introduction to Partial Differential Equations: Elimination of arbitrary constants ,
functions – solution of first order partial differential equations – types : F(p,q ) = 0 ;
F(z,p,q ) = 0 ; F(x,y,p,q) = 0 ;
Clairaut’s form; Lagrange’s form – solution of higher order partial differential equations
homogeneous type only.

One Dimensional Wave Equation: (derivation not included) – transverse vibration of
finite elastic string with fixed ends – problems.
One Dimensional Heat Equation: (derivation not included) – steady and transient states

Unit-1 15 Periods
DC Generators: Constructional features of DC machines – lap winding – wave winding
principle of operation of DC generator – EMF equation – methods of excitation –
permanent magnet, separately excited and self excited machines - shunt, series and
compound generators – armature reaction - commutation – OCC – critical resistance and
critical speed of a shunt generator – external and internal characteristics of dc generators–
parallel operation of DC generators.
Unit-2 15 Periods
DC Motors: Principle of operation of DC motor – back EMF and its significance -
torque equation – characteristics of shunt, series and compound motors. Starting of DC
motors –types of starters – methods of speed control of DC shunt and series motors –
losses and efficiency of dc machines – Brake test, Swinburne’s test and Hopkinson’s test.
Unit-3 15 Periods
Single Phase Transformer: Principle of operation and constructional features of single
phase transformer – EMF equation –step up and step down transformers- transformer on
no load and on load – phasor diagram - effects of resistance and leakage reactance of
winding on voltage regulation – equivalent circuit of single phase transformer. Losses
and efficiency – all day efficiency – testing – polarity and voltage ratio tests – O.C and
S.C tests –calculation of efficiency and regulation – Sumpner’s test.
Unit- 4 15 Periods
Three Phase Transformer: Autotransformers – comparison with two winding
transformers - parallel operation with equal voltage ratio - 3-phase transformer –
transformer connections – vector group – voltage and current relations.
Specific electric loading – specific magnetic loading –output co-efficient –output
equation of DC machines – calculations of main dimensions of DC machines. Output
equation for single phase core, shell type and 3 phase core type transformer – selection of
number of turns of various cores.

location – restriction of poles and zeros of driving point immittance functions and
transfer functions – Time domain response from pole zero plot – amplitude and phase
response from pole zero plot – problems.

Unit-4 15 Periods
Overview of Systems: Analogous Systems – Linear mechanical elements – Differential
equations in time domain – D’ Alembert’s principle – modeling- Translational and
rotational systems – Force-voltage analogy – Force-current analogy – Mechanical
coupling devices .
Classification of systems: Linear, Non-linear, Time–invariant, time-varying, continuous,
discrete, lumped, distributed systems.

Unit-1 15 periods
Op-Amp Fundamentals: Difference amplifier – Op-Amps – equivalent circuits - Op-
Amp specifications: input bias current, input and output offset voltages, input and output
impedances, bandwidth, slew rate, CMRR and open loop gain – feedback in op-amp
circuits – negative feedback - loop gain - Basic Op-Amp configurations: inverting
amplifier, non-inverting amplifier, summer, subtractor, buffer, multiplier, divider –
differentiator and integrator – current to voltage converters and voltage to current
converters.

Unit-2 15 periods
Voltage Comparators, Schmitt Triggers and Filters: Basic voltage comparators – Op-
amp as a voltage comparator – Zero crossing detector – IC 311 & IC 339 – high speed
comparator – level detectors – peak detectors - window detectors – comparator
applications. Schmitt triggers – precision rectifiers – half wave and full wave rectifier
circuits - sample and hold circuits – first order LP and HP butterworth filters.

Unit-3 15 periods
PWM Circuits and Voltage Regulators: Sine wave generators - Wien bridge,
quadrature and phase shifting oscillators – VCO – multivibrators – monolithic timers –
IC 555 timer – 555 timer as an astable, monostable and bistable multivibrator – square
wave generator & triangular wave generators (both bipolar and unipolar) – pulse width
modulation circuits –saw tooth generators – V/f conversion. Voltage regulators - Fixed
voltage regulators and adjustable voltage regulators.

Unit-4 15 periods
D/A & A/D converters and PLL: D/A conversion technique – weighted resistor DAC –
R-2R ladders – current mode and voltage mode – A/D conversion techniques: DAC
based A/D conversion – successive approximation, counter ramp, dual slope integration –
flash and sigma converters. PLL – operating principles – monolithic PLL – PLL
specifications – frequency multiplier and divider.

Introduction: Functional elements of a measurement system-general classification of
instruments-static and dynamic performance characteristics-errors in measurements and
their propagation, Digital multimeter-Digital frequency meter-Automation in Digital
Instruments -Automatic polarity indication-Automatic ranging-Automatic zeroing.
Sensors and transducers - Resistive, inductive and capacitive – piezo electric – electro
magnetic- photoelectric transducers. Display systems using LED and LCD.

Unit-2 15 Periods
Mechanical Measurements: Motion measurement- Absolute and relative motion
measurements- Force measurement-elastic force transducer-Strain gauge-Piezoelectric
transducer-optical shaft position encoder. Torque and power measurement -
dynamometer- Transmission and absorption types. Pressure measurement- high, medium
and low pressure measurements-calibration. Temperature measurement, Thermo couples-
RTD devices- thermistor -non electrical method – electrical methods – radiation method.

Unit-3 15 Periods
Instrumentation Amplifier: – Basic configuration – Characteristics – Typical
applications of instrumentation amplifier-signal conditioning-signal correlation - signal
filtering. Active filters using OPAMPS- low pass, high pass and band pass filters –
advantages –frequency response characteristics – Butter worth filter - elementary design
of above filters.

Unit-4 15 Periods
Voltage regulators: Series and shunt regulators- load and line regulation- monolithic
voltage regulator – 723 Voltage regulator-Typical circuits using 723 IC. Switched mode
power supplies – Basic principles of DC-DC converter- Block diagram – Advantages of
SMPS- Typical applications.

representation of FM – frequency spectrum and bandwidth – Carson’s rule – effects of
modulation index on FM bandwidth.
Generation of AM waves – linear and square law modulation – diode balanced modulator
– SSB generation – generation of FM – direct and indirect methods – block diagrams of
AM and FM transmitters.

UNIT – II (16 Periods)

Audio Reception: Detection of AM waves – diode detectors – synchronous detection –


phase locked loop – FM discriminators – slope detector – balanced slope detector - Foster
Seeley discriminator – Ratio detector.
Receiver types - TRF and super heterodyne receivers – block diagrams of AM and FM
receivers – various types of noise and their effects on AM and FM – characteristics of
receivers.

UNIT – III (12 Periods)

Digital and Data Communication: Pulse modulation: generation and detection of PAM,
PWM and PPM signals - sampling theorem – PCM, delta and adaptive delta modulation
– multiplexing – TDM and FDM – modems.
Serial and parallel transmission of data – asynchronous and synchronous communication
– structure of computer communication network – types of network.

Satellite Communication – Introduction – types of Satellites – Oribits – Satellite
subsystems – Earth Station (transmit and receive) - Optical Communication –

3. Calibration of Wattmeter by Phantom Loading at UPF, 0.5 & 0.86 lag and lead.
4. Calibration of Energy meter by Phantom Loading for UPF, 0.5 & 0.86 lag and lead.
5. Determination of Hysterisis loop using CRO.
6 Extension of range of voltmeter & ammeter and conversion of milli ammeter
into voltmeter.
