Paul,

Once again, I must ask if the same standard of proof is required of letter writers who
support illegal immigration as those who oppose it.
In the January 16 paper a letter from David Medrano makes two specific comments;
one of which is false and the other which is both misleading and creates a false
impression of the truth.
“Since there is scant evidence of any real threat to Americans posed by illegal
border crossings perhaps Trump can turn his attention to a very real national
emergency-the threat to our safety from mass shootings.”
One doesn’t have to look very far to find the 2018 Criminal Alien Crime report released
by the General Accounting Office this past July. They released similar reports in 2005
and 2010. Here
A few highlights:
• From fiscal years 2011 through 2016, there were a total of about 198,000 unique criminal aliens
that were incarcerated in federal prisons. These criminal aliens accounted for 35 percent of the
total number of unique inmates incarcerated from fiscal years 2011-2016 (pg. 16)
• We estimated that the approximately 197,000 criminal aliens in our federal study population
were arrested/transferred for a total of about 2 million offenses, averaging 10 offenses per
criminal alien (emphasis mine). (pg. 25)
o This group was responsible for 6,000 murders, homicides and manslaughters. (Pg. 25)
• Table 3. Estimated number of attempted or committed offenses for which State Criminal Alien
Assistance Program (SCAAP) criminal aliens incarcerated in state prisons and local jails from
fiscal years 2010-2015 who had an FBI number and were arrested/ transferred from 1664-2017
o Estimated number of crimes – 5,467,200 (pgs. 31-32)
o Homicides, murders, manslaughters – 27,300 (pg. 32)
o Sex offenses – 120,300 (pg. 31)
• Primary offenses for which SCAAP criminal aliens incarcerated in fiscal year2015 were convicted
varied across these selected state prison systems:
o California: Homicide and sex offenses accounted for about 53 percent of the more than
18,600 primary offenses for which SCAAP criminal aliens were convicted. (pg.36)
o Arizona, Florida, New York and Texas statistics are also listed (pg.36)

“Since 1999 more than 500 Americans have died in mass shootings……..”
Perhaps Trump can address this crisis by exercising his “emergency powers”
which would save many American lives at a cost far less than 5.7 billion
The 500 mass killings since 1999, although tragic, pale in comparison to the statistics
listed above.
I can’t blame Mr. Medrano or the millions of citizens that believe illegal aliens are all
crime free. That distinction belongs to The Times, MSNBC, CNN and most major
newspapers and networks in the United states.
“If an illegal alien commits a crime and the media doesn’t report it did it really happen?
The answer is yes and when a tree falls in a forest and no one is around it does make a
sound.
This unanswered letter from your Executive Editor Norman Pearlstine is indicative of the
way the media covers, or should I say ignores crimes committed by illegal
aliens. Here I should add that I was remiss in not listing the trial of Johnny Josue
Sanchez. Sanchez was tried in October for the arson fire he set in Los Angeles in June
2016. Here His trial and ultimate conviction did not merit one word in your newspaper.
An editorial in Sunday’s paper, “A DACA deal worth refusing”, makes a point that Trump
is trying to coerce Congress into supporting something the country doesn’t want. Maybe
if The Times reported these stories and editorials about illegal immigration more
honestly and you didn’t print letters that were misleading at best and factually incorrect
at worse the public would have a different opinion. I won’t even address your op-ed
pages that are nothing more than a reflection of the rest of the ills on illegal immigration
your newspaper exhibits throughout.
Sincerely,
Don
