ATTENTION: Please, write your solutions to the problems D1->D4 on a separate sheet
of exam paper, and code this sheet with 'DYN' in the upper right corner.
D1) A spring-damper-mass system is given. Suppose it can freely vibrate. Given the following equation
of motion for this system 0, with m = 1 kg, c = 1 Ns/m and k = 36 N/m:
a) Find the natural circular frequency ωn and the viscous damping factor ζ.
b) Do tell if the system is underdamped, overdamped or critically damped and do find the
damped natural frequency ωd.
c) Suppose you get a viscous damping factor equal to zero, which kind of vibration function
x(t) we come across?

D2) The system starts from rest and the motor rotates with a constant angular acceleration αA = 2 rad/s2.
rA = 2.0 m, rB = 4.0 m, rC = 6.0 m, rD = 1.5 m, rW1 = 3.0 m, rW2 = 5.0 m are given. Assume the belt and
rope don’t slip.
a) Determine how much the weight W1 have been lifted, s1, after the motor has turned one
revolution.
b) Determine how much the weight W2 have been lifted, s2, after the motor has turned one
revolution.
c) After the motor has turned one revolution, calculate the magnitude of the linear acceleration aP
(considering both tangential and normal components) of point P moving on the pulley B.
d) After the motor has turned one revolution, calculate the magnitude of the linear acceleration aQ
(considering both tangential and normal components) of point Q moving on the pulley C.

D3) A uniform cylinder of outer radius R = 50 cm and mass m = 4 kg with moment of inertia about an
axes passing through point P (at a distance R from the center of mass O) I = 1.5 kgm2 , starts from rest
and rolls, without slipping, down an incline tilted at an angle β = 30°° from the horizontal. The center of
mass of the cylinder has dropped a vertical distance h = 9 m when it reaches the bottom of the incline. Let
g = 9.81 m/s2 denote the gravitational constant. The coefficient of static friction between the cylinder and
the surface is µs = 0.3. The reference coordinate system is indicated to simplify calculations.
NB: the kinematic constraint for the no-slipping condition is
 / and fs ≤ µsN.
a) Do draw the free-body diagram and the kinetic diagram and calculate the mass moment of inertia
about the center of mass O.
b) Write the equations of planar motion. Calculate the angular acceleration of point P around the
center of mass O and the acceleration of the center of mass.
c) What is the magnitude of the velocity of the center of mass of the cylinder when it reaches the
bottom of the incline?
d) Determine the range of values that the static friction coefficient can have in order for the cylinder
to roll without slipping.

D4) The collar C slides with linear velocity vc = 1m/s as shown, and the point A is linked so that arm AB
rotates around point A. The length of rod BC rBC = 0.5 m is given.
a) Find the center of zero velocity of the system at the instant shown.
b) Determine the angular velocity of rod BC ωBC at the instant shown.
