2 STORIED RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

SECTION: 1
INTRODUCTION

Industrial Building Consultants (IBC) has been asked by Myth Ltd to Design the
extension of existing two storied residential building at Banani.
However, as per information provided by the client/owner there is no detail
structural drawing available for the existing building. Considering the structural safety
of the existing building IBC has tentatively analyzed the building and generated a
preliminary structural assessment report.
Also we have evaluated the building in light of different codes from BNBC 2006. Our
preliminary assessment report shall deliver the following facts
1. Preliminary structural assessment report.
2. Code requirements for masonry structures.
3. Recommendation.

SECTION: 2
2.0 Project Information

2.1 | Condition of Existing Building

The existing building is a decorated two storied residential building in Banani,

Dhaka. It is a load bearing masonry structure. The client wants to vertically
extend the building by two more stories.

2.2 | Available Drawings

The client has provided us with the following information of the project.

1. RAJUK approval drawings for two storied buildings. (Dated 1-9-1986)

2. RAJUK approval for 3 storied building. ( Dated 18-6-2008)
3. RAJUK approval for 4 storied building. ( Dated 17-6-2015)
4. Typical Foundation size from RAJUK approval drawings.

SECTION: 3 | Preliminary Engineering Assessment

The main purpose of this analysis is to determine structural stability of a two

storied brick masonry building situated at Banani area. Moreover this report will
check & compare additional information related to future extension of this
residential building.

Basis of analysis:
The analysis was conducted based on available data from site visit &
architectural drawing shared by client. Furthermore the missing information was
considered as from worst case scenario.

3.1 Check For Foundation Design:

Assumed Design parameter:

Allowable bearing capacity at 1.04m Depth: 0.5 TSF (Maximum assumed)
Provided foundation size: 3.74 Feet (from RAJUK Approval drawing)

3.3 Check for bearing wall capacity:

Required STRENGTH OF EXISTING STRENGTH OF

data BRICK MORTER

Availability Missing Missing

Assumed Design parameter (BNBC 4.3.2): Strength of masonry, 3 MPa

Allowable Stress (BNBC 4.3.5): Fa = 0.3 Mpa/6.3 KSF

SAFETY OF EXISTING BEARING

Conclusion: Perform NDT/DT on brick wall. Increased load may cause bearing
wall to crack under increased load.

3.4 Structural Stability against Seismic Activity:

Seismic Zone: Zone-2.
As per BNBC for Seismic Zone 2 wall should be reinforced to support lateral load
in case of any seismic activity (BNBC 4.8.2).

Required VERTICAL REINFORCEMENT(wall

data REINFORCEMENT(corner) joints)

Availability Missing Missing

Conclusion: Perform NDT/DT on brick wall. Ensure that adequate

reinforcement was provided to support lateral load.

5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:

As per analysis & discussion carried on above it can be summarized that key fact/data that is
needed to be addressed before conducting any further alteration and modification is absent
for this residential building. Moreover as a masonry structure it needs special arrangement
and consideration for lateral stability as per BNBC.
Considering requirement chart stated above it can be concluded that the structure is
“NOT SAFE FOR VERTICAL EXTENSION”.

On the contrary considering unavailability of design data, it can be recommended that a

“DETAIL ENGINEERING ASSESMENT” is to be performed to support alteration as per client’s
requirement followed by a series of methodological testing accommodated at site area to
accumulate design data and check feasibility for future provisions.
