Tabletop Blitz

When: December 8th, 2019 10am – 3pm

Where: CSULB USU Ballroom

DESCRIPTION
Tabletop Blitz is the ultimate gaming event for board game enthusiasts hosted by CSULB Board
Game Enthusiasts. It will take place at the University Student Union Ballroom at California State
University Long Beach on December 8th, 2019 from 10am to 3pm. Tabletop Blitz is for students
in the campus that can range from individuals who are curious about tabletop gaming to
individuals that are tabletop enthusiasts. With the rapid progression of technology for console
and PC gaming, there has been a large shift from traditional board games to online gaming.
Tabletop Blitz will be an entire day dedicated to playing board games with friends and strangers
with vendors and food to enjoy.

MISSION STATEMENT
CSULB Board Game Enthusiasts believe that it is essential to preserve tabletop gaming culture
and promote social gatherings around board games between friends and family that create lasting
memories of joy with one another.

EVENT OBJECTIVES
1) Attendees playing board games will have a positive experience
2) Attendees who didn’t own a board game prior to the event become willing to buy one.
3) Attendees become immersed in the world of tabletop games

EVENT OUTCOMES
1) Ninety percent of individuals that played a board game had a positive experience

-The board gaming community is very relaxed and chill, so attendees will be playing with
others who are looking to have fun more so than be competitive and play aggressive for
the win.
2) Seventy percent of the attendees leave more willing to buy a board game
Khunnarith Chea

- As a result of attending Tabletop Blitz and playing various board games all day, the
attendees become more likely to buy a board game that they enjoyed playing during the
day.
3) Everyone that came to the event suggests playing board games to friends and family.

- Board games revolve around a social gathering and Tabletop Blitz aims to be an
opportunity for that gathering. There is a large variety of board games and styles of play
that can fit the individual. Being able to play multiple games and find out what is fun for
you becomes infectious and it’s something you want to share with friends and family. All
of this continues to promote the idea of preserving and promoting tabletop games.

NEED FOR EVENT AND PROMOTION

PLACE: CSULB has two clubs for gaming; CSULB Esports and Gaming Association and
CSULB Gaming Club. The Esports and Gaming Association focuses on competitive gameplay
and the Gaming Club has a more recreational approach. Aside from the general meetings that
allow time for gameplay, there is no large event hosted by the organization that formally invites
the student body to come and explore. CSULB Board Game Enthusiasts aims to fill that void
with Tabletop Blitz by partnering with local gaming shops such as Amazing Comics and The
Guild House to extend the invitation to the students on campus so that they can be immersed in
the tabletop gaming world and be a part of the tabletop community.

PRODUCT: It is safe to say that most people in their life has played a classic board game like
Monopoly, Risk, Sorry, Life, and Scrabble. Tabletop Blitz aims to present these classic games to
students as well as introducing them to a larger library of tabletop gaming that range from easy
to learn mechanics all the way to complex mechanics that require a lot of strategy and critical
thinking. With the library of games, the play can be individual, or team based so everyone can
find the game they connect with.

PRICE: Being able to host an event on campus through an organization allows Tabletop Blitz to
host the event at no cost of the student. There is a $5 fee for those who want to come to the event
and are not students. The event is “free” for the students because the students already pay a fee to
ASI and the USU every semester which host multiple events throughout the year.

PROMOTION: Utilizing the campus’ social media accounts, Tabletop Blitz would be
advertised through CSULB’s ASI social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat.
Contact 22 West Media to do a story about the event. The SRWC also has an Instagram page and
Snapchat handle and giving them a flyer with all the event details would help reach a larger
audience. The main form of promotion would be through the posters on wooden stakes spread
strategically throughout campus. With the amount given, they would be placed around the lower
campus courtyard that has high foot traffic and the upper campus quad that many students walk
across between class. Both locations would be high points of interest and then the third would be
the USU. The USU and dining area serve as the center of campus that almost everyone goes by.
Advertisement towards further areas is important but the students who are occupying the
building space also need to be aware.

VENUE ESSENTIALS / OPERATION DETAILS

The most important part about the venue is space. Hosting a TableTop Blitz requires a lot of
space because board games take up an entire table. Finding that there was a lot of room for tables
and games to be set up helped make the USU Ballroom a perfect choice. Also, this event is
primarily for CSULB students, so the venue rental was free because of the student organization.
This helped saved money from the budget and allow more money to go elsewhere to better the
Khunnarith Chea

event. Having catering on campus makes bringing food to the event a lot easier because they
have their own staff and attendees will have some food for lunch to eat. Being on campus also
makes the location familiar to people so finding the location wouldn’t be an issue. Also, the
students don’t have to pay for parking if they already have a parking permit so they can easily
park right in front of the USU building the day of the event. For students who commute, campus
is right next to 3 freeways that’ll get them there quick on a Saturday morning, 405, 605, and the
22. These are some of the pros of the event, but there are a handful of cons. If you are not a
student, you do have to pay for parking which has risen to $9 and finding your way around
campus can be very confusing.

Staffing and Orientation Plan

Tabletop Blitz will require 35 staff in total. 5 staff will be dedicated to the sign in tables at the
front to get students into the ballroom quickly with their nametags. The other 25 staff will be
trained in learning a board game and assisting students get a enough people for a game to start
playing. 13 game masters will be assigned to walking around and helping students find a game to
play and then staying with them throughout the game. Their shift is over at lunch at noon and the
other 12 will take over and help coordinate games. 2 staff will be stationed at each snack station
and 1 staff member will be the MC for the day and a runner in between announcements helping
game masters get what they need and helping all around. Everyone will be trained in tabletop
gaming etiquette so they can inform players and the board games can last longer. A red tshirt will
be the staff uniform and their nametags will have a star next to their name so they are easily
spotted anywhere in the room. Game masters will know the itinerary of the event so that they can
inform players of the how soon the next activity is and how much time they have for their game.

Event Activities
Once the doors open at 10am, sign in staff will start to assist students in line to get them in with
their nametag and a raffle ticket. Game masters would help students find a card game to play and
start once there is enough. After 20 minutes and good chunk of students have come in, the MC
would introduce the event and how its structured along with going over the safety protocols and
Khunnarith Chea

where the restrooms are. After the announcements, the first round of games will be card games
until 11am. At 11am, the game masters help switch the card games to entry level board games
that do not have difficult game mechanics based off of their group. The time frame for these
board games is 50 minutes and then 10 minutes to wrap it up. Game masters roles become even
more crucial so that the games can start sooner because learning games takes the longest.

After lunch, the game masters switch and half set up the more complex games and the other half
does the moderate games. Game masters then find people willing to play the harder games or the
moderate and start the games again.

After an hour, there is an announcement for free play so that anyone can play anything. Game
masters are no longer restricted to the certain game and can play along with the students they
have helped.

Inclusion Plan
Having various levels of games, there will definitely be enough games for everyone to
play. If someone has troubles with critical thinking then a GM can help them find something that
might be easier to play and continue to encourage them. Students of various personalities will be
attending the event so GMs have to be able to see that and cater to it so everyone feels included,
especially on the team games so no one person is taking charge of the entire game since that can
happen.

Event Wrap & Survey

Eval: 1) Did you have a positive experience playing board games?
2) Did you own a board game prior to this event?
3) Are you more likely to buy a board game because of this event?
4) Would you recommend board games to friends and family??
5) Will you host your own board game night?

This survey would be passed out towards the end of the event but also turned into a google form
so students can fill out the form by following a link on the social media platforms again. Doing
this again would help reach a greater audience and students who may have left the event prior to
the end and missed the survey. Changes to be made in the future may be have some video games
and VR games so that there is something students can take a breather from board games with.
Khunnarith Chea

Playing board games require a lot of thought so video games or a VR which is ultimate
immersion can help attract some more participants.
