INTRODUCTION
Good afternoon today I will talk about the topics taught in the class
In the first topic we talk about how there are countries where people
take great care of animals. By discussing in groups and making oral
presentations, you are going to share knowledge of various topics:
Pampered Pets, Silly Sports, Modern Marriage, Shopping, Las
Vegas, shoplifting, Gluttony.
Next level treats the rest of the topics planned to improve speaking
skills in learners.
I love this place. The owner already knew my dog and me after
day one and I have brought my poodle back for more. The
price is great and you can tell they care for the dogs they
groom! They take better care of my dog than the 5 other
places I used to go to before them.
A. Read the statements and write true (T) or false (F). Go
back to Reading i .and look for the answers you are
unsure of.
T1. People can eat at the Pet Cafe.
F 2. Dogs eat at tables at the Pet Cafe.
F3. Americans are spending less money on pets than they
did before.
Vocabulary Work
1. Can you guess the meanings of these words? What clues did
you use?
I know about someone that is crazy about pets. His name is Hastin, I
agree with how he treat his pet, he pampers her, gives her special
food, clothes and medicine to his little dog. I am a pet lover and O
care a lot about animals.
Extreme ironing
According to the Extreme Ironing Bureau, this is “the latest danger
sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the
satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.” The competitors call themselves
“ironists” and go to dangerous or remote places with a board
to do the ironing. The activities may include ironing underwater,
on top of a mountain, in moving vehicles, in a canoe, in the middle
of a busy street, while skiing, skydiving, or snowboarding.
Wife-carrying
The sport of wife-carrying was born in the small town of Sonkajarvi
in Finland. Male competitors race while each carrying their wives
on their backs through an obstacle course. The history of wife-
carrying is based on the 19th-century legend of Ronkainen the
Robber. According to one of the versions, Ronkainen the Robber
and the members of his gang were stealing food and women from
neighboring villages carrying them over their shoulders as they ran
away. Wife-Carrying World Championships are held annually
in Finland and the winner receives the equivalent of his wife’s weight
in beer.
Toe wrestling
This unusual sport involves 2 competitors trying to pin down each
other’s foot to the ground for at least 3 seconds. There are 3 rounds
that are played first with the right foot, then with the left one. This
strange sport dates back to 1976 when a group of people living
in Staffordshire were trying to think of a sport that only the British
could win.
Modern marriage: Till de-glitching does us part
The young have re-booted marriage for the modern generation,
to be beta-tested, learnt from and discarded. But isn’t
permanence the whole point?
The young and in love now want to beta-test their marriage in much
the same way as software is put through a last stage of testing
before release. In the spirit of all things digital, marriage is seen as
an iterative experience, where you learn what you can, adapt, then
nimbly move on.
'Just because you like buying clothes, doesn't make you a shopping
addict,' says Professor Alexander Gardner, a consumer psychologist
and member of the British Psychological Association, reassuringly.
'Someone like Victoria Beckham can spend a lot, but that doesn't
mean she's addicted, it just means she enjoys it - mainly because
she can afford everything. Everyone gets a kick out of shopping.'
True - retail therapy is the ultimate escape. A bad day translates into
a new pair of shoes, while a good day justifies treating yourself 'just
because'.
