ABSTRACT
The effect of grain size on unit-cell dimensions and di-
electric properties has been studied in ceramic lanthana -
substituted leadtitanate and leadtitanate-zirconate mixed
crysta ls o f the ge nera l co mp ositio n P ial_ axLa xZryT il_ y
°3+x(1.5-a) . The influence of grain size has been investi -
gated in the range from 0.611m-101m and can be distinguished
from other microstructural influences by its effect on di -
electric properties. A decrease of the grain size leads to
a decrease of the maximu m of the dielectric constant E' at
the "Curie" temperature T 01, while the value of T c' shifts
to a lower temperature and the s'--T curve (phase transi-
tion) becomes broadened. The results can be discussed
in terms of a distribution of internal compression stres -
ses spreading around an average value which increases
with decreasing grain size.

In a large number of ferroelectric ceramics the paraelectric -
ferroelectric phase transition has been found to be broadened and
to deviate from the Curie-Weiss behaviour (exhibited e.g. by pure
BaTiO,single crystals). The magnitude of the real (E') and imagi-
nary WI) part of the dielectric constant and the temperature Tc'
at which the maximum value of El occurs, vary considerably with
microstructure and preparation procedure. The magnitude of the
changes in properties is composition dependent while sometimes
frequency-dependency occurs.
The possible causes of the above mentioned effects can be di-
vided in three main groups and may be listed as follows:
a) macroscopic large scale inhomogeneities of composition and
stress (scale large with respect to domain size)
b) stress and stress distribution induced by grain size (scale
comparable with domain size)
c) microscopic inhomogeneities within one phase (scale 50-10008)
The inhomogeneities in this category are in thermodynamic equi-

Macroscopic inhomogeneities and
microstructure
The preparation procedure
has a considerable influence on
dielectric properties. This has 10
been shown for compositional in-
homogeneities in PbZr0.5Ti0.503 6
and Pb1_axLaxTiO34,x(1.5_0) by Keizer et
al (9) where a single sintering
step at a relative low temperature
leads e.g. to an increased value of
the apparent Curie temperature Tc' 2
(E temperature at which the maximum
value of El occurs) and to a
broadening of the phase transition.
The same effect occurs as
large stress fluctuations origi- 320 360 400
nating from hot-pressing operations TEMPERATURE (SC)
are not removed adequately by an
appropriate annealing procedure. FIG, 2
This is demonstrated in Fig. 1 for Effect of grain size on dielec-
samples with the same composition tric constant c' around Tc'
and grain size but different for PLT7 (sample no. see Table
thermal history. 1)
In all samples used for in-
vestigating grain size effects
macroscopic compositional and
stress fluctuations have been
eliminated. It appears that these 1.040
can be distinguished dielectrically
from grain size effects by their
opposite effect on Tc' as will be
shown further. The density of all 1.020
samples is better than 96% and in
most cases better than 98% of
theoretical density. _
