1 About Preps 6.1 for
Prinergy workflows

Before adding version 6.1 of the Kodak Preps imposition software to an

existing Kodak Prinergy Connect or Prinergy Evo workflow that
previously used Preps 5, you must be aware of changes in how you
install and use Preps.
Note: Unless a Prinergy Connect or Prinergy Evo workflow is specifically referenced
in this document, the term Prinergy applies to either type of workflow.

About Preps 6.1

Preps 6.1 accepts only PDF input files for populated imposition jobs, and
it provides handy tools for creating unpopulated layouts. The
harmonized Kodak Gold interface provides an enhanced workspace that
combines preview and edit capabilities in a single window.
Use the following resources to become acquainted with new Preps 6.1
features:
● Preps 6.1 Release Notes
● Preps 6 Quick Start Guide
● Preps 6 Introduction For Preps 5 Users
● Feature demonstration movies and training activity documents
● Preps 6.1 User Guide

Much of this information is available from the Preps Help menu and on
the Preps DVD, and all of the information is available online. Check our
Web site periodically for the latest software updates, release notes, and
documentation. Go to http://graphics.kodak.com/ or https://

Licensing Preps 6.1 for use with Prinergy

Preps 6.1 can run either under a dongle-based license or under a
floating license that is issued by a Prinergy server. Some workflows
might use a combination of these licensing methods.
You can use the Preps 6.1 Licensing Control dialog box to set the license
type that is activated by default at each local Preps 6.1 installation, and
you can view who is currently using each license type.
Note: Preps 6.1 is automatically installed with Prinergy Workshop if the Prinergy
server has a Preps 6 license.

Prinergy versions
Output files from Preps 6.1 (dongle based or floating license) are
compatible with all versions of the Prinergy software.
2 Chapter 1—About Preps 6.1 for Prinergy workflows

For the most up-to-date compatibility information, see the workflow

release notes. Preps 6.1 floating licenses can be used with:
● Prinergy Connect version 5.0.3.2, 5.1.2.0, and later
● Prinergy Evo version 5.1.6.0 and later

Preps 6.1 DLL integration

With Prinergy Connect 5.1.2.2 the Preps engine can be licensed either
as Preps 6.1 or Preps 5, with corresponding functionality. With Prinergy
Evo 5.1.6.7 the embedded Preps engine will be 6.1, so that either Preps
6 or Preps 5 templates may be used.

Prep 5 DLL mode

With the release of Prinergy Connect 5.1.2.2 and Prinergy Evo, it is
recommended that you force the Preps 6 DLL to think like a Preps 5
DLL. In order to do this, locate the profile you are using. Open the
profile (example PrepsPrinergy.cfg) in a text editing application, and
then add the line: -FORCEPREPS5DLLMODE:YES. Save and close the
profile. This forces the Preps 5 mode of operation regardless of your
licensing.
Note: This will change how a Preps job is interpreted and processed back to how
Preps 5 worked. If you find that you will be switching between these modes, it is
recommended that you create a new profile just for Preps 5 mode. Then use the
normal profiles and load the Preps 5 profile as necessary.

Preps 6.1 integration with Prinergy 5.1.2.2

Users with full support contracts are entitled to the Preps 6 upgrade at
no charge. Other users can chose to upgrade their Prinergy license to
include Preps 6 or continue using Preps 5.3.2. During Workshop
installation, the installer checks the Preps license on the Prinergy
server. If the license is for Preps 6, it proceeds to install Preps 6.1
application on the client. If the license is for Preps 5, it leaves the
existing Preps 5 application on the client.
● Run the Prinergy Workshop Installer, if you want to have
Preps 6 installed, make sure that it is selected in the Workshop
Installer.
● If a site is currently running Preps 6 on all workstations, and has a
Preps 6 license in Prinergy’s license, then the Workshop installer
will install a new Preps 6 and remove any old Preps 5 installation
under Applications\Kodak\Prinergy\AraxiPreps. No special
action is required.
● If a site is currently running a mix of Preps 5 and Preps 6 on
different workstations, and site has a Preps 6 license in Prinergy’s
license, then:
3

● Preps 5 workstations: Users should be aware that the Workshop

installer will install a new Preps 6 and remove any old Preps 5
installation under Applications\Kodak\Prinergy
\AraxiPreps. Therefore, on a workstation that still needs to run
Preps 5, you should either:
● Make a copy of the Applications\Kodak\Prinergy\AraxiPreps
folder and rename it AraxiPreps_5.3.3, or
● Clear the check box next to the Preps Client installer in the
Prinergy Workshop install menu, or
● Go to Kodak eCentral and download Preps 5.3.3 and install it
(by default, to Applications\Preps 5.3.3)
For all of these, you need to re-direct Workshop’s Configure
Imposition Applications to these changed locations. In Prinergy
Connect, set the Preferences > Folders tab, and point the
Template, Marks, and Resources Folders path to the shared folder
location
● Preps 6 workstations: The Workshop installer automatically
installs a new version of Preps 6, and removes any old Preps 5
installations in Applications\Kodak\Prinergy
\AraxiPreps.

Notes: Refer to the following Prinergy document for more information on Preps 6.1
with Prinergy:
● Prinergy read me that is accompanied with the Prinergy version 5.1.2.2
● Prinergy Connect release notes

Downgrading from Preps 6.1 to 5.x

Run the Uninstaller.exe application. This removes all the main components
of Preps. This will retain the profiles, marks, templates, printers, and
resources.
Note: If you decide to downgrade to Preps version 5.0, Preps version 6.0 jobs are
not backward compatible with Preps 5.0.

Upgrading to Preps 6 outside of the Prinergy 5.1.2.2

upgrade
Follow the steps in Adding a Preps 6.1 installation to a Prinergy Connect
workflow later on in this guide.
Note: If a site is currently running Preps 5.x on all workstations and does not have
a Preps 6 license in Prinergy’s license, then the Workshop installer will keep the
Preps 5 install intact. The Workshop installer will install neither a new Preps 5 nor
new Preps 6. No special action is required.

Using Preps in a mixed client environment

Make sure that you keep the Preps versions separate. In each version
of Preps, start each software individually and make sure that the
4 Chapter 1—About Preps 6.1 for Prinergy workflows

Preferences > Folders > tab, points to the Template, Marks, and
Resources Folders path in the shared folder location.
Important: If you need to use both versions in conjunction with Prinergy Connect,
it is imperative that you follow steps 8 (a through g) in the Adding a Preps 6.1
installation to a Prinergy Connect workflow later on in this guide. It is recommended
that you follow the note in step c, as this will help you to determine what version
of Preps can be used.

Preps 6 upgrade license

Based on your site's support contract, contact the Response Center to
verify licensing.

Troubleshooting and Tips

If you accidently installed Preps version 6.0 over your Preps version
5.0, you can reinstall from the Preps 6 CD or you can download the
Preps 5 Installer from the Kodak eCentral site .
Do not rename Preps templates in the operating system. Only rename
the template in Preps, by selecting Save as Template. If you change the
name of the template at the operating systen level, Preps displays a
different name to what appears in the operating system.
Always check eCentral for the latest Release Notes, Read Me file, and
instructional videos.
2 Preps 6.1 for Prinergy
Connect

Adding a Preps 6.1 installation to a Prinergy Connect

workflow
For information about setting up integrated Preps software, see the
Prinergy User Guide. Although that document pertains primarily to Preps
5.x integration, the setup information is generally applicable. For
information about installing and setting up stand-alone Preps software,
see the Preps documentation.
Note: If you have Prinergy Connect 5.1.2.2 or later installed, refer to the Prinergy
Connect documentation for the correct installation procedures.

1. Install a copy of the Preps software on the prepress operator’s

computer, following the instructions in the Installing Preps 6
installation guide.
2. On the Prinergy Connect server, update the Preps folders in the
AraxiPreps volume.
a. Copy the Resources folder from the Preps 6.1 installation, and
paste it at the same folder level as the Templates and Marks
folders.
b. (Optional) Review the Preps 6.1 installation Templates and
Marks folders, and copy any new sample files of interest from
those folders to the corresponding shared folders.
3. Start Preps and, in the Licensing Control dialog box, select the
licensing method that this installation will use.
Tip: In Preps 6.1, you can access this dialog box at any time by pressing
Command+U or Ctrl+U or by selecting Preps > Edit > License.
● If you select Dongle License, enter the license password that you
received with the dongle to activate the Preps license type that is
associated with the password. The dongle determines the
features that are available when you start Preps on this
computer.
● If you select Prinergy Floating License, in the License Server list,
select the license server that this installation will use. The types
of Preps floating licenses that are registered at the server appear
in the Types list.
6 Chapter 2—Preps 6.1 for Prinergy Connect

4. If you are using a floating license, select the Preps license type that
will be automatically activated when you start Preps on this
computer.
Tip: To view a list of the computers and users who are currently using an
instance of an available license type, select the type and click Details.
5. If you changed the licensing information, restart Preps to apply the
license.
Note: The license settings are stored in the currently loaded Preps profile. The
first time that you start Preps locally on this computer, it loads the Default
profile, which derives its settings from the local default.cfg file.
6. On the Preferences > Folders tab, point the Template, Marks, and
Resources Folders path to the shared folder location.
7. Continue setting up the Preps software as needed for your prepress
workflow. For more information, see the Preps User Guide, which is
available in the Preps Help menu.
8. At each Workshop client computer that will use Preps 6.1 to create
impositions, add the Preps 6.1 application type or types that this
client will use.
a. Select Tools > Configure Imposition Applications.
A list of the imposition applications that you've already added
appears.
b. Click Add .
Note: You cannot use the AutoDetect option to add Preps 6.1, because it
looks only in the Kodak/Prinergy/AraxiPreps/Preps 5/ folder on the
local computer. It does not automatically detect Preps 6.1 software, even if
it is installed on the local computer.
c. Locate and select the Preps 6.1 installation on the local
computer or another computer on the network, and click OK.
Your software selection appears at the bottom of the list. If
another item uses the same name, a number is appended.
Tip: You can use a text editor to manually change the name that is
displayed.
● In the Mac OS, edit the AppDisplayName line in the Library/
Application Support/Kodak/Workshop/Layout.props file.
● In Microsoft Windows, edit the C:\Documents and Settings
\<UserName>\Application Data\Kodak\Workshop folder.

d. In the new row, click the Application type column to display a

list.
e. If you plan to use the Preps 6.1 selection to create unpopulated
Preps impositions, select a Preps Pro or Preps Plus type.
Using Preps 6.1 with Prinergy Workshop 7

f. If you plan to use the Preps 6.1 selection to create populated

impositions (for folded or ganged layouts), select a Preps
Ganging type.
g. If needed, click Add again, select the same or different Preps 6.1
installation, and associate with another (or the same)
Application type.
Repeat this step as needed for your workflow.

Next: You can now use Preps 6.1 to create impositions for Prinergy
Workshop jobs.

Using Preps 6.1 with Prinergy Workshop

Create an imposition for a job using Preps 6.1 software integrated with
Prinergy Workshop.
Requirements: A floating-license Preps 6.1 Pro application type must
be available in Workshop's list of imposition applications.
Notes:
● If you are using a dongle-based installation of Preps, do not use this procedure.
Instead, create the imposition as a Preps job and then import the imposition
into the Prinergy job. To import the imposition, use the same procedure as in
the Preps 5 dongle-based software.
● Jobs that you save in Preps 6.1 cannot be opened in Preps 5.x or earlier.

For more information about the following steps, see the Preps User
Guide and the Prinergy Workshop User Guide.

1. In the Prinergy job in Workshop, add the input files and assign the
pages to page sets.
2. In the Signatures view, select Create New Imposition, and specify a
name for the imposition.
3. To use the interactive features in Preps 6.1, select Use External
Imposition Application.
Note: Prinergy Signature Selection allows you to work with any templates
based on the Preps license that you purcased. If
Note: If you have a Preps 6.1 license you can work with both Preps 6.1 and
Preps 5 templates. If you have a Preps 5 license you will only be able to work
with Preps 5 or earlier templates.
4. Select the imposition application type, and either select Use
Existing Page Set or specify the number of pages that are required
in the imposition. (The number of pages must exactly match the
number in the Prinergy job's page set.)
Tip: When selecting the type:
8 Chapter 2—Preps 6.1 for Prinergy Connect

● For a blank-page, unpopulated workflow, select a Preps 6.1 Pro

or Plus type. When Preps starts, the Pages List will contain
blank pages equal to the number of pages.
● For flat or bound work in a populated PDF workflow, select a
Preps 6.1 Ganging type. The Files list will contain the actual PDF
pages, and you can preview the content as you build the layouts.

The Preps job opens in the Preps 6.1 main window with the
specified job name and .old appended to the name, to distinguish
it from the Prinergy job. The PrepsPrinergy profile is automatically
selected in the Preferences dialog box. Prinergy copies unique
settings stored in the AraxiPreps copy of
PrepsPrinergy.cfg.template to the locally stored
PrepsPrinergy CFG file.
5. Create the imposition using any available method.
● For a folded and bound job, add the PDF pages to the product in
the Pages List to set up its run list, and use any available method
to complete the press-run layouts. For example, you might
autoselect a template or set up the press sheet, and then add
fold pattern resources or use the Create Imposition dialog box to
apply a template or fold pattern.
● For flat work, set up the press sheet and then manually gang,
step and repeat, or autogang the pages.
6. Print the output to a JDF or PJTF file type.
The imposition is immediately imported into the Prinergy job. If you
created an unpopulated imposition using a Preps Pro or Preps Plus
license type, pages are populated according to the page assignment
that you set in step 1.
3 Preps 6.1 for Prinergy Evo

Adding Preps 6.1 to a Prinergy Evo workflow

1. Install a copy of the Preps software on the prepress operator’s
computer, following the instructions in the Installing Preps 6
installation guide.
2. For Prinergy Evo 5.1.6.5 or earlier, update the PgyEvoConfig/
Preps shared folder.
Command+U or Ctrl+U or by selecting Preps > Edit > License.

will be automatically activated when you start Preps on this
10 Chapter 3—Preps 6.1 for Prinergy Evo

7. Continue setting up the Preps software as needed for your prepress

workflow. For more information, see the Preps User Guide, which is
available in the Preps Help menu.

Using Preps 6.1 with Prinergy Evo

You can continue to create impositions directly in Prinergy Evo or to
create the impositions separately in the stand-alone Preps software.
The basic workflow has not changed.
Prinergy Evo 5.1.6.7 and later directly support the use of Preps 6
templates within Evo's Create Imposition process templates. To take
advantage of the new features in Preps 6.1 with Prinergy Evo 5.1.6.5 or
earlier, you must use a stand-alone installation of Preps 6.1 and then
submit the impositions for output from Prinergy Evo.
Note: Jobs that you save in Preps 6.1 cannot be opened in Preps 5.x or earlier.

For more information about the following procedure, see the Preps User
Guide and the Prinergy Evo User Guide.

1. Create a populated PDF job in Preps 6.1.

2. Send the JDF or PJTF output from Preps to be output from Prinergy
Evo.
