History
Formed in 1972. Formerly known as the American Chapter of the Neue Bachgesellschaft (New Bach Society).
Later in 1988 it became independent from their German counterparts and was renamed as the American Bach
Society (ABS).

Purpose
Supports the study, performance, and appreciation of the music of J.S. Bach in the United States and Canada.

Membership
Annual Fee: $50 (Students for $25)

Grants/Prize
William H. Scheide Research Grants
Purpose Supports research projects on Bach or figures in his circle.
Applicants PhD candidates, junior faculty, independent scholars, and senior faculty with limited resources.

Grants $500-$2,000 and one-year ABS membership

William H. Scheide Prize


Purpose Honors well-written publication of Bach or figures in his circle.
Publications include books, articles, or editions in the previous two calendars years.
Applicants Scholar in the early stages of his or her career (10 years or less), nominated by an ABS member.
Prize $1,000 and two-year ABS membership
