Auxiliary equipment
Several pieces of auxiliary equipment keep the mud in good shape. The
shale shaker sifts out the normal-sized cuttings.
Sometimes, though, the bit creates particles so small that they fall through
the shaker. Desilters (fig. 105) and desanders (fig. 106) remove fine
particles, or small solids, to keep them from contaminating the drilling
mud.
A degasser (fig. 107) removes small amounts of gas that enter the drilling
mud as it circulates past a formation that contains gas. The driller cannot
recirculate this gas-cut mud back into the hole because the gas makes the
mud lighter, or less dense. If the mud gets too light, the well can kick-
formation pressure can enter the hole. In rare cases, a kick can lead to a
catastrophic event called a blowout. (The Spindletop well was a blowout.)
Well Control
A hole full of mud that weighs the right amount, or has the proper density,
will not kick. Sometimes, however, the bit drills into a formation, or zone,
that contains pressure higher than expected. The mud`s density is too low
–it does not develop enough pressure- to contain the formation`s
pressure. furthermore, rig crews can make errors. They may allow the
level of mud in the hole to drop, for example. A hole partially filled with
mud may not exert enough pressure on bottom to offset formation
pressure.
RIG COMPONENTS
Whatever the cause, formation fluids such as gas, oil, and water, which
occur under pressure in the underground rocks, can enter the wellbore.
When they do, they give indications, or sings, which the crew has been
trained to recognize. For example, the level of mud in the tanks may rise
above normal.teh extra fluids from the formation add to the volume of
mud already in the hole. Another sing is mud flowing out of the well even
with the pump shut down, or turned off. The pressure of the entering
formation fluids forces the mud to flow from the well. An alert and well-
trained crew can spot these and other sings.
Once crew members recognize a kick, they bring the second line of
defense against blowouts into play. They close the blowout preventers, or
BOPS (“bee-oh-pees”). Since they stack several BOPS at the top of the
well, they often call it a BOP stack. The blowout preventers are large, high-
pressure valves. When closed, they form a pressure- tight seal at the top
of the well and prevent the escape of fluids.
On land rigs and on offshore rigs that are not floaters, the crew attaches,
or nipples up, the blowout preventers on top of the well beneath the rig
floor (fig. 110). On floating offshore rigs, such as semisubmersibles and
drill ships, the crew lowers the BOP Stack to the top of the well on the
seafloor (fig. 111). Guidelines, or special sonar, guide the stack to the well.
The crew installs a floating rig`s stack on the seafloor because floater
move with the wind and waves. For a BOP stack to work properly, it has to
be stationary on top of the well.
Riser pipe connects a subsea stack with a floating rig`s surface equipment.
It forms a tubular conduit from the stack to the surface and has a
telescopic joint. The crew installs the telescopic joint near the water`s
surface. This joint allows a section of the riser pipe to move up and down
with the rig`s up-and-down motion. The crew installs the flexible joint just
above the BOP stack. It allows the riser pipe to move with the rig`s side-to-
side motions.
Crew members attach several cables to the riser near the surface. They
run these cables to riser tensioners on the side of the rig`s derrick. Riser
tensioners maintain an upward pull on the riser cables. Upward tension
prevents the riser from collapsing under its own weight.

Equipo auxiliar
adecuada, no pateará.
