Chapter I

Introduction

Mariano Marcos Memorial High School has its own different schedule

among other secondary schools that offer Senior High School because faculty and

administration decided to have only a 4-day school week for SHS students. In

addition, quality implementation is an important element of any effective

innovation and many factors may affect the level of implementation attained

(Meyers, Durlak et al. 2012).

The motivation for implementing the four-day school week has been primarily

to reduce operating costs. However, there are other positive factors that support a

decision to implement the four-day week. Some school districts have found an

improvement in attendance, both for students and staff, reduced student discipline

problems, and increased student participation in extracurricular activities after

implementing the four-day week. Once implemented, the 4 day format often proves to

be extremely popular among students, parents, and staff.

Days of classes is one of the biggest factors that affect a students’ performance.

As what mentioned above, MMMHS only have 4-day school week because Friday is

considered as students’ “rest day” or “check day” for teachers. This 4-day school week

was first introduced for the school year 2018-2019. This research would like to know

the effectiveness of 4-day school week and how it affects the Senior High School

students’ performance .

The benefits of going to a 4-day week for schooling is that it offers teachers and

students an additional day for rest every week. More rest then equates to dealing with

1
less stress over the course of a school year. Students feel less pressure because they

have more time to study at their own pace at home, especially in the later grades.

The pros and cons of a 4-day school week offer many challenges. There are

positive outcomes that may occur, but there are negative outcomes that must also be

managed. Each community has unique needs which must be met, so there is the

possibility of a 4-day week being useful to some schools, but not others. The decision

to implement such a schedule must therefore be handled at the local level.

It is also important for the school to explore the factors affecting the students’

performance. Clearly, there are numerous cognitive and non-cognitive factors that have

a much stronger influence students’ performance. Identifying the factors associated

with students’ academic performance or academic within the 4-day school week will

enable educators, curriculum planner and policy marker to set up support systems to

help them perform better.

Kleijn et al (1994) pointed out that academic competence is associated with

students’ ability to manage their study load, i.e. student with better academic

competence would probably have better academic performance. Review into the

literatures has indicated that the skills, attitudes, and behaviors contributing to academic

competence fall into one of two domains: (i) Academic Skills or (ii) Academic Enablers

(DiPerna and Elliott, 1999).

This research would like to know the effectiveness of 4-day school week for

SHS students in Mariano Marcos Memorial High School greatly affect them in terms

of performance, behavior, attendance, budgetary savings, time management,

cleanliness, health and class schedule.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. The potential relationship among implementation components, organizational

features, and influence factors. Adapted from “Implementation Research: A Synthesis of the

Literature,” by D. Fixsen, S. Naoom, K. Blase, R. Friedman and F. Wallace, 2005, University of South

Florida. Copyright 2005 by Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute Publication #231.

Based on years of experience, Rosenheck (2001) sees “organizational process

as a largely unaddressed barrier and as a potential bridge between research and

practice” (p. 1608). “Large human service organizations … are characterized by

multiple and often conflicting goals, unclear and uncertain technologies for realizing

those goals, and fluid participation and inconsistent attentiveness of principal actors.

It is in this field of competition, ambiguity, and fluid managerial attention that efforts

to import research findings into practice take place” (p. 1608).

As shown in Figure 1, the core implementation components must be present

for implementation to transpire with fidelity and good outcomes, such as student

achievement and success of the new innovation being executed. The organizational

3
components must be present to enable and support those core components over time.

“The implementation process can be viewed systematically in terms of a temporal

series of linked steps that should be effectively addressed to enhance the likelihood of

quality implementation” (Meyers, Durlak et al., 2012, p. 17).

The research study is connected with the abovementioned framework for

implementation of 4-day school week is very essential to determine causes of such

phenomena in order to tie it up with the possible outcome of it.

This research about the Effectiveness and Impact of 4-day School Week

Towards the SHS Students’ Academic Performance in Mariano Marcos Memorial High

School is conducted for the researcher sees the opportunity to formulate a study like

this in order to have an improvement and development in terms of having a more

scientific basis in implementing days of classes not only in MMMHS but also in all

schools who offer SHS .

Researcher created a paradigm about the overview of this study so that people

who are interested about this topic will easily predict what this study is all about by just

taking a glimpse with the creative graphical presentation which is the conceptual

framework seen above.

Statement of the Problem

This study will discuss the effectiveness and impact of 4-day school week

towards the academic performance of SHS students.

1. What is the profile of respondents as regards to :

1.1 age;

1.2 gender;

1.3 grade level ?

2. What is the effect of 4-day school week to SHS students in terms of :

2.1 academic performance;

2.2 attendance;

2.3 behavior ;
5
2.4 health; and

2.5 budgetary savings?

3. How students perform in school during 4-day school week?

3.1 academic subjects;

3.2 core subjects; and

3.3 extra-curricular ?

4. How effective is the 4-day school week in SHS considering the ff:

3.1 time management;

3.2 cleanliness and maintenance;

3.3 financial;

3.4 attendance;

3.5 health condition; and

3.6 class schedule?

5. Is there a significant relationship between 4-Day school week and SHS

students’ academic performance?

Research Hypothesis

The hypothesis will be based on the question number 5 from the statement of

the problem where the researcher created at least two hypothesis which are contradictory to

each other in order to indicate that the possible outcome of this research is not manipulated or

formulated by chance.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant relationship between 4-day

school week and SHS students’ academic performance .

6
Null Hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between 4-day school

week and SHS students’ academic performance .

Scope and limitation

Researcher has a specific area of study that focus the effectiveness of 4-day

school week and its impact towards the academic performance of SHS students. The

scope of this research mainly focuses on the senior high school students of Mariano

Marcos Memorial High School and its effect to their academic performance. This

research will use survey questionnaire to be distributed to random people.

This study is limited only for secondary schools who offer Senior High School

only, specifically Senior High School students in Mariano Marcos Memorial High

School for they are the focus of this study. It will only revolve around the topic about

the 4-day school week. The researchers will not exceed from getting information

from the respondents that is beyond the topic and their privacy as well.

Significance of the Study

The study presented by the researcher is very applicable and innovative within

the campus because it will measure the effectiveness of the 4-day school week in

Mariano Marcos Senior High School and how does it affect the academic performance

of SHS students. This research not only aims to gather information but also to benefit

the following:
7
SHS Students. This will benefit SHS students for they will know how the 4-

day school week affect them in several aspects when it comes to academe and well-

being.

SHS Teachers. Senior High School teachers can be benefited for they are also

affected by the 4-day school week. Friday is for their meetings, checking, remedial

classes for students etc.

Parents. Parents of SHS students will be benefited through many aspects such

as time they spend with family will be added because of the 4-day class every week and

only 4 days will be counted when giving a weekly allowance for students.

SHS Department Head. They are the one who make class schedule and come

up with the 4-day school week therefore the results of this study may be one of their

indicators on how is it effective for SHS students.

School Administration. It will be easier to encourage and persuade incoming

SHS students to enrol in Mariano Marcos Memorial Senior High School because of the

4-day Class every week and Friday will be allotted as rest day for students.

Future Researchers. For those who will conduct the same research or at least

a related one this can be a good source once presented and checked.

Other Schools. The result of this research will determine how effective is the

implementation of 4-day school week in Mariano Marcos SHS, if positive, surely they

will adopt this strategy in order to have a large population of students.

8
Operational Definition of Terms

The terms encountered from the different parts of this research are given below

provided the operational definition in accordance to its usage in sentences:

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Researcher gathered several information for the related literature and studies in

order to support the research and provide validity of the data and sources. This will give

a big impact for the school implementation of the 4-day school week in Senior High

School.

Foreign Literature and Studies

The Four- Day School Week : Research Behind Trend

According to Ordway 2018 “To save money and help with teacher recruitment,

numerous school districts in the United States have decided to give students and

employees Fridays off. An estimated 560 districts in 25 states have allowed at least

some of their schools to adopt a four-day week, with most moving to a Monday-to-

Thursday schedule, according to the National Conference of State Legislators.

Generally, schools make up for the lost day by adding extra time to the remaining four

days.” This article will fall under the effectiveness of four-day school week towards

10
students’ budgetary savings included in the questionnaire yet this is also applicable for

teachers when it comes to expenses.

The Advantages of Four-day School Week.

Stated by Bradley 2019 “A four-day school week is a relatively new and

innovative idea gaining popularity with students and teacher across the United States.

For some, the advantages of attending school only four days per week far outweigh the

potential disadvantages. The financial savings to districts that jump on the four-days-

per-week bandwagon can be tremendous, regardless of the size of the district. However,

there are other benefits that serve as motivation for adopting this new educational

structure.”

Researcher focuses more on the advantage of the four-day school week because

this study would like to magnify how effective it is in Senior High School students

when it comes to different aspects how this schedule affect students in performing

inside the school.

Four- Day School Week can Improve Academic Performance, Study finds.

Georgia State University (2015) mentioned that this study suggests there is little

evidence that moving to a four-day week compromises student academic achievement, an

important finding for U.S. school districts seeking ways to cut costs without hampering

student achievement.
11
"What interested me about our results is they were completely opposite to what

we anticipated," said Mary Beth Walker, dean of the Andrew Young School of Policy

Studies at Georgia State. "We thought that especially for the younger, elementary school

kids, longer days on a shorter school week would hurt their academic performance because

their attention spans are shorter. Also, a longer weekend would give them more

opportunity to forget what they had learned."

As stated by Walker (2015), although the shortened school week did not have a

measurable impact on reading outcomes, "the idea that the change in the calendar did not

have negative effects we thought was an important result,"

Shortening the School Day.

Shortening of the school day is a topic that has been discussed recently within

legislative bodies, due at least in part to growing financial concerns. However, there

are advantages and disadvantages associated with shortening the school day that

should be considered before sweeping action is taken to alter the traditional school

day. The financial savings for the district and more time for productive activities after

school are two major advantages. However, those advantages might be offset by a

reduction in instructional time and the possibility of attending school more days of the

year.

Local Literature and Studies

4-Day School Week Proposed.

This article written by Mike Frialde is about the four-day school week

program is not a new concept. According to Tolentino (2014) , it has been practiced

since the 1930s, and became more common during the 1970 US energy crisis. .

He also added the shortened school week will not only help cut vehicular and

pedestrian volume in major thoroughfares but also transportation and education costs.

Tolentino (2014) indicated that the solution is not perfect and has room for

adjustment to fit in the Philippine school system. However, it is also undoubtedly a

scheme that will redound to the benefit of the general public and help improve the

traffic situation in Metro Manila . In addition, with only four days in school, students

and teachers have more time to spend with their families and loved ones.

DepEd to study proposed 4-day school week in Metro Manila

“We will discuss and study carefully this proposal because we have a DepEd

calendar which mandates that schools should at least complete 180 days out of the

200 school calendar days,” said Assistant Secretary Tonisio Umali of DepEd over an

interview on Inquirer Radio 990AM.

Umali (2014) said the 180 days is “non-negotiable” and should be a “contact

time” between teachers and students. He said that the department will have to study

13
alternative delivery modes to make sure students would continue to get quality

education once the proposal is adapted.

He added DepEd has yet to receive a formal request from the MMDA citing

that the implementation of the said proposal needs a directive from the department.

Journal of Education and Training Studies Vol. 6, No. 1; January

The four-day school week is a concept that has been utilized in rural schools for

decades to respond to budgetary shortfalls. There has been little peer-reviewed research

on the four-day school week that has focused on the perception of staff that work in

school districts that have recently switched to the four-day model. This study collects

data from 136 faculty and staff members in three rural Missouri school districts that

have transitioned to the four-day school week within the last year. Quantitative

statistical analysis identifies strong support of the four-day school week model from

both certified educational staff and classified support staff perspectives. All staff

responded that the calendar change had improved staff morale, and certified staff

responded that the four-day week had a positive impact on what is taught in classrooms

and had increased academic quality. Qualitative analysis identifies staff suggestions for

schools implementing the four-day school week including the importance of

community outreach prior to implementation. No significant differences were identified

between certified and classified staff perspectives. Strong staff support for the four-day

school week was identified in all demographic areas investigated. Findings support

conclusions made in research in business and government sectors that identify strong

employee support of a compressed workweek across all work categories

Research Design and Methodology

This chapter deals with the methods and techniques that the researcher will

apply in collecting data essential for the study. Chapter 3 also contains the instruments

which will be used by the researcher for gathering data.

Research Design

The research method to be used in the study is the Descriptive method. This

Method is intended to describe the effectiveness of the 4-day school week and to relate

it with the performance of SHS students’ performance inside the school. Carrying out

such method will lead to the answers for the stated problems indicated. The method

directs which and shows how data is collected and analyzed. It also suggests appropriate

instruments that can be used for determining desired outcomes.

Population and Sample Size

Senior High School in Mariano Marcos has an estimated population of 600

students but the researcher will only focus on 30 respondents from Grade 11 and Grade

12 students of all strands. Researcher will give 15 questionnaires for each level to

balance and tabulate the result effectively.

15
Instrument and Sampling Technique

The researcher used questionnaire as an instrument for the study to help them

gather information and data about the effectiveness of 4-day school work. The

researcher required the respondents to scale the level of effectiveness of 4-day school

week in specific aspects as well as how can they rate themselves in accordance with

their performance in school within 4 days in a week. The interpretations used in the

questionnaire are the following:

Purposive Sampling Technique was used in order to be specific with the target

respondents which are the SHS students of all strands. This technique will be helpful

in identifying the scope and limitation of this study as regards with the grade level and

strand.

Data Collection

Researcher distributed questionnaires as an instrument to collect data and

information among respondents. It were randomly distributed during the vacant time of

students to avoid distraction of classes.

16
Before questionnaires were distributed, it undergo validation considering the

content of statement of the problem. Once validated, questionnaires will be distributed

randomly and be collected after the respondents answered to finally analyze the results.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering the needed data which was used by the researchers, the following

were done’

1. Securing permission to conduct the study. The researcher

drafted a letter to secure permission to conduct the study to the school principal once

signed, the researchers would caught permissions from the teachers of the Senior High

School in Mariano Marcos Memorial High School. Letters will also be showed to the

students

2. Drafting of the research materials. Through the leading of

various literature, studies and other materials, the researcher made a questionnaire and

dealth with the variables under the study

3. Try out and validations. In the try out, the researcher used at

least 5 sections of senior high school to test the usability of the questionnaire materials

and to validate the appropriateness of items.

4. Actual administration of the research questionnaire. With

the permission of school principal, the researchers distributed the questionnaire, the

researchers also gave a couple of time to the respondents to answer the instrument as

honestly as possible.

17
5. Observation and survey were done in the collection of data.

Once the questionnaires were retrieved, the data were treated statistically to find out the

answer to the questions.

Table 1 clearly states that a total of 30 respondents from Senior High School in

Mariano Marcos Memorial High School from both year levels, 57 percent of respondents

are male students with a quantity of 17 while 43 percent are female respondents which is

equal to 13 students.

The statistics from TeacherPH Professional Learning Online Community of

Teachers and for teachers shows that Male students have greater population the female

based on Total Enrolment in Public Secondary Schools as of September 30, 2015 as

reported by school heads in the Enhanced Basic Education Information System (EBEIS).

Locally, the population of Mariano Marcos Senior High School could also be seen from

the table above because population of male enrollees is larger that female.

shows that out of 30 respondents, there are 18 students whose age is between 17-18 years

old which is 60 percent , 8 students making up 27 percent of 15 -16 years old while there

are 4 whose between 19-20 years old which is only 13 percent of the sample size

population.

According to Department of Education prescribed curriculum (2015) the age

requirement for grade 11 students is 16 years old while 17 years old for grade 12

students. This indicates that the age bracket of SHS students are in lined with the

prescribed standard of DepEd in terms of students’ age and year level.

performance of Senior High School Students compared to other factors with the General
Weighted Mean of 4.33 which is equivalent to effective while the least from the data above
is behavior which has 3.87 General Weighted Mean and equivalent to Somewhat effective.

Georgia State University (2015) mentioned in the article entitled “Four day school

week can improve academic performance, study finds” that this study suggests that there is

little evidence that moving to a four-day week compromises student academic achievement,

an important finding for U.S. school districts seeking ways to cut costs without hampering

student achievement meaning this four day school week is one of the reasons to be effective

in students’ academic performance.

In this table, performance of Senior High School student is being represented

through the scale where SHS students perform well in extra-curricular with the General

Weighted Mean 5.13 which is equivalent to excellent performance while the least from

the data is the core subjects which has a General Weighted Mean of 2.45 that is

equivalent to poor meaning the 4-day school week does not really a great factor when it

comes to students’ attitude or behavior..

The results and data above is supported by the study “The Effects of

Extracurricular Activities on the Academic Performance of Students” where it was stated

23
there that Many extracurricular activities have proven to be beneficial in building and

strengthening academic achievement, even if the activities are not obviously related to

academic subjects (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002, para. 9). “A number of studies revealed that

students participating in extracurricular activities did better academically than students

who did not participate” (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002, para. 7). Researchers have

particularly studied the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic

performance in adolescents.

Numerous studies have been conducted concerning the relationship between

extracurricular activities and academic performance. Total extracurricular activity

participation (TEAP), or participation in extracurricular activities in general, is associated

with an improved grade point average, higher educational aspirations, increased college

attendance, and reduced absenteeism” (Broh, 2002, para. 8). Guest and Schneider (2003),

in looking at the previous research on this subject said, “Researchers have found positive

associations between extracurricular participation and academic achievement” (para. 2).

Although researchers agree that extracurricular activities do, in fact, influence academic

performance, the specific effect that various activities produce is debated. One study,

conducted by the National Educational Longitudinal Study, found that “participation in

some activities improves achievement, while participation in others diminishes

achievement” (Broh, 2002, para. 1).

7. Does it help students in terms of health condition? 63% 37%

8. Is 4-day school week more effective than 5-day school week? 83% 17%

As seen in table 5, the questions in this part are only answerable by yes or no

regarding the impact or effect of 4-day school week to students. The cleanliness of

environment, willingness and interest to attend classes and effectivity of 4-day school week

than the 5-day schedule before, with 83% of the respondents answered yes and 17 percent

of sample who said no. 77 percent of the respondents agree that 4-day school week lessen

their expenses while 23 percent did not. While for the extension of time spend in school

within 4 days, there is 63 percent who said they are not willing to extend their time and 27

percent said yes.

Maintaining cleanliness during 4-day school week is easier than the traditional 5-

day school schedule according to 83 percent of respondents who answered yes while 17

percent answered no. In support with the data given in table 5 number 4, Aboleda (2014)

says that it is really tough to be CLEAN from any dirt, be it on ourselves and our

surroundings, but when you start young adopting it, ORDERLINESS will follow.

Referring to numbers 5 to 8 , Majority answered yes for the following questions

because 4-day school week gives impact in terms of less expenses for students,
25
willingness to attend , and for the SHS students’ health condition. Overall 4-day school

week is said to be more effective than the 5-day school week with 83 percent of

respondents who answered yes.

Chapter V

Summary of Findings, Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter contains the overall outcome of this research study including the

effectiveness of 4-day school week and how it affects SHS students’ performance through

many aspects. Researcher will also give some suggestions and recommendation for the

future researchers and for those researchers who are interested with the same topic which

is the 4-day school week in the Senior High School of Mariano Marcos Memorial High

School.

Summary of Findings

26
This study seeks for the effectiveness and impact of Four Day school week towards

the performance of SHS’ students in Mariano Marcos Memorial High School to achieve

the purpose of the following
