CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.0 Background of the Study

Academic performance is to measure of success for students. This evaluates if a
student meets the standards set out by the local government or the institution itself. It is
presented as a summation of the numerical methods that determined the student's
excellence (Bell, 2018). Furthermore, academic performance plays a major role in
achieving academic accolades and it hints possible probabilities in achieving one's long
term goals. Hence it is important for students to excel in their academic performance.
Yet, not all students find academic success achieve consequently, several studies aim to
find way in order to solve this issue. But before being able to solution to this, it is
important to know the cause and reason behind a student's academic performance. This
leads to concerns regarding factors that contribute to a student's academic performance.
Moreover, one of those factors which highly contribute to a student’s academic
performance is his or her study habits. Study habits are adopted ways and manners a
student plans his/her academic related reviews after class hours in order to master a
specific subject. Moreover, good study habit is significant to learners for them to attain
mastery in a specific academic underperformance if otherwise (Azikiwe,1998). Though
study habits weigh so much importance to the academic performance of students, the
relationship between the two has not given significance and emphasis.

Here in Binalbagan Catholic College Senior High School Department, it is

inevitable for students to struggle as they face their academic lives. This issue is not
limited within this school’s context only. Schools in the Philippines also need to produce
fine and quality graduates that can excellently work as a professional and students must
try to excel in their academic performance in the extent of their capabilities.
Furthermore, the relationship between academic performance and study habits are also
subject for students even internationally. Thus, this study aims to further elaborate and is
specifically focused on the relationship between study habits and academic performance
of Grade 11 students of Binalbagan Catholic College Senior High School Department.
Given that the data will be coming from Grade 11 students of Binalbagan Catholic
College Senior High School (BCCSHS), the range of those who will find benefit in this
study will not be only limited to them. This research aims to be beneficial to students of
any grade level of any school and even to parents or teachers who raises concerns about
academic performance. Thereupon, as issues regarding academic performance of Grade
11 students of BCCSHS, escalates, describing and establishing between the relationship
the two is important, for students to know and understand, as to how study habits affect
their academic performance.
The purpose of this quantitative research is to reveal and describe the relationship
between study habits and student’s academic performance by examining the factors that
influence the students study habit, investigating the effect of study habits on academic
performance and by assessing the study habit of the senior high school grade 11 students
in Binalbagan Catholic College.

1.1 Statements of the Problem

Study habits plays an essential role in the development of the academic
performance of a student. Good study habit will likely to result to a good academic
performance where as a poor one may lead to also poor academic performance of a
student. Study habit is something that needs to be worked out and improved as it could do
a great help to the academic performance of the student. By the end of this quantitative
study these following questions are ought to answered:
1. What is the profile of Senior High School students of Binalbagan Catholic
College, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental during the school year 2019-2020 when
they will be grouped according to: strand, year level, time allotted for studying,
frequency of studying, and mode of studying?
2. What are the prevailing study habits and the level of academic performance of
Senior High School students of Binalbagan Catholic College during school year
2019-2020 when they will be grouped according to: strand, year level, time
allotted for studying, frequency of studying, and mode of studying?
3. Is there a significant relationship between study habits and students’ academic
performance?
Furthermore, this qualitative study has the following objective to be achieved:

1. To determine whether study habits have a significant relationship with the

academic performance of the Senior High School students or it is an insignificant

factor that has no significant relationship with the academic performance

2. To determine possible solution or develop a study habit routine that would surely

aid students who find difficulties in studying result thus, resulting to poor

academic performance.

1.2 Hypothesis
Three hypotheses were formulated based on the statements of the problem.
1. The profile of the Senior High School students has no significant
relationship with their study habits and therefore, will not affect their
academic performance.
2. The prevailing study habits of the Senior High School students have no
significant relationship with their level of academic performance.
3. There is no significant relationship between study habits and students’
academic performance.

1.3 Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

As time goes by, the importance of education increases its value. Consequently,
these days, many studies regarding the academic performance related issues emerges.
Among those issues are factors that contributes to the low academic performance of
students including their study habits. It is in accordance to Don Elger’s Theory of
Performance wherein he mentioned that one of the three axioms for effective
performance improvement is engagement in reflective practice that can be implied to
one’s study habits. It is also emphasized in John Dewey’s Theory of Experience and
Education that prior knowledge plays a role in the development of new understanding.
Their studies justify that study habits have effects on students’ academic performance.

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter the researcher will discuss the research problem by showing studies
who has the capacity to support our research study. We will give support by giving the
claims and results of past researchers who undertaken the same research problem.

Academic performance describes how a student performs in his/her class, may it

be in a single subject or in the total subject offered in the course a student is enrolled.
This academic performance is influenced by several factors present in the learner’s
environment or the way he/she handles himself/herself in the learning process. One of the
vital factors which could greatly affect the outcome on the students’ academic
performance is study habits. Some of the foreign researches regarding study habit and its
impact on a student’s academic performance were conducted by Ebele and Olofu (2017),
and is entitled “Study Habits and its Impact on Secondary School Students’ Academic
Performance in Biology in the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, wherein the authors
stated that there is a significant relationship between study habits and the academic
performance of the students. This claim is further supported by Bashir and Mattoo’s
(2012) “A Study on Study Habits and Academic Performance among Adolescent Years”
stating that study habits affects the academic performance of students especially on their
adolescent years. Even in college years, study habits are also a determinant of the
students’ academic performance as concluded by Nonis and Hundron (2006), in their
study “Academic Performance of College Students: Influence of Time Spend Studying
and Working” emphasizing as well as the role of motivation and study time and how it
could positively affect the academic performance of the students. This is true because
according to Otto (1978) in his “Study about behavior and Tertiary Academic
Achievement”, there is a significant and positive relationship between the amount of the
time spent in studying and efforts of the students in studying with regards to the outcome
of their academic achievement. This conclusion, however, was opposed by another
foreign study by Oluwatimilehim and Ouoyele (2012) in their research “Study Habits and
Academic Achievement in Core Subjects Among Junior Secondary School Students in
Ordo State, Nigeria” stating that among the subscales of study habits ‘teacher
consultation’ was the most influential to the academic achievement of the students rather
than time allotment and concentration. Nevertheless, both opposing findings still
demonstrate the participation of students in the learning process whether it concerns time
allotment or not. On the other hand, Nouhi, Shakoori, and Nakhei (2008) in their research
entitled “+Study Habits and Skills and Academic Achievement of students in Kerman
University of Medical Sciences” claimed that the correlation of the study habits with
educational achievement was not significant correlation with the students’ educational
achievement. In this, it could be implied that study habits are not the only one who could
affect the academic performance on the students but also the students’ study skills.
Moreover, in order to achieve success in academic performance, students must practice
sound study habits throughout their learning journey. In the study conducted by
Mendezabal (2013), entitled “Study Habits and Attitudes: The Road to Academic
Success” it is emphasized that academic success requires not just cognitive ability only
and justifies the idea that study habits is likewise essential. The present study showed the
significant relationship between students’ study habits and their performance in licensure
examinations. Consequently, in order to enhance the quality of education, improving
students’ study habit is necessary. This could be put to action through implementing
developmental programs that will be beneficial for students in order to build an efficient
and effective study habits, in early stage of learning. Students’ engagement in
educationally purposeful activities that can result in high levels of cognitive and personal
growth is also suggested. Furthermore, Hassanbeigi et. al (2011), in their study “The
relationship between Study Skills and Academic performance of University students”
support this conclusion because according to their conclusion, academic success requires
sound study habits and attitudes of university students towards standard education with
the aid and support of their professors and faculties and staff. Finally, study habits, as one
of the contributors the poor academic performance of students, can be improved. Through
seminar-workshop conducted by guidance counselors and through the efforts of students’
welfare office focusing on time management, test anxiety management, developing skills
and interest in reading and writing by the students, moderate level of study habits of
students can be improved according to (Magulod Jr. 2019) in his local study entitled
“Learning styles, study habits and academic performance of Filipino University students
in applied science courses: Implications for instruction.”

As a synthesis, the studies mentioned above justified that study habits is a

significant contributor to students’ academic performance. It is a vital factor influencing
the outcome of a students’ academic performance and by forming an effective study habit
or routine and also with the aid of teachers in the learning process, academic performance
of students can be improved. Moreover, as concerns regarding this topic increases,
further studies necessitate to be conducted in order to fully explain and describe study
habits and academic performance’s relationship in various context. Consequently, this
study specifically focuses on how study habits contribute to the academic performance of
Grade 11 students. Furthermore, studies stated above emphasized the importance of study
habits for students. Thus, this study is timely and essential to elaborate the correlation of
academic performance and study habits in a way that it could be beneficial and
informative.
CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This qualitative study will have Descriptive - Correlational or its design. The
researcher chose this research design as it will be most suited design to be need in the
study. Though this design, it would be possible to reveal the relationship of study habit
and student’s academic performance, as a poor study habit needs to poor academic
performance where as good as one, results to good academic performance where as a
good one, results to good academic performance. Descriptive Correlational research
design can describe how poor study affect students’ academic performance.

3.2 Subjects and Study Site

The study will take place at Binalbagan Catholic College Senior High School
Department with Grade XI Senior High School students across all their strands (STEM,
ABM, and HUMSS) who exhibited poor academic performance as its target
population.the sample to be used will be the class ranking of each participating target
population which will also serve as basis on how poor do the target students perform
academically.

3.3 Instrumentation

The instrument that will be used in this study will be a questionnaire adopted from
the survey conducted by the National Institution for Youth Education on study habit of
High School students in several countries such as United States, Japan, China, and Korea.
The questions from this questionnaire matches the objectives of the study, and therefore
would be utilized for the actual data gathering process.

3.4 Data Collection Procedure

The data will be collected through paper and pencil questionnaires survey type. The
questionnaire will be distributed into the target population, the results will be evaluated
and interpreted through statistical methods which will be discussed on the latter part of
this chapter.

3.5 Data Analysis

In determining the number of samples out of the total population of the Senior
High School Students of Binalbagan Catholic College, the researcher used the Slovin's
formula and applied the standard formula for population. The researcher also used the
formula to test the reliability of the questionnaire and the applicability of it towards the
study. Then used the formula for Cronbach Alpha to determine the questionnaire's
consistency.

3.6 Ethical Considerations

Given the significance of ethics in conducting a research, every researcher go to

great length in order to protect the dignity and safety of research participants ( Silverman,
2009). furthermore, several ethical considerations were taken into account to ensure that
the study was conducted appropriately (Barbie & Mouton, 2001). To satisfy the ethical
considerations that must be complied, all participants were not deprived of their fights.
The participants are informed and the objectives, purpose and description of the
research were explained to them before conducting the data gathering. They are asked of
their consent and given them the freedom to willingly participate in the study. Moreover,
all data and information obtained legally and with their permission. The researcher also
ought to protect the identity of the participants by keeping their profile, background and
personal information confidential. At the end of the data gathering, the researcher
conveyed their gratitude to the participant to build more professional relationship.
