Study Habits and Academic Performance of Grade 11 STEM Students

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

One of the most vital things a person must possess in life is education. According to Merriam-
Webster (2017), it is the knowledge and growth that come from an educational process. It most
frequently takes place under the guidance of others, though it is also possible to learn on one's own.
Any experience that changes how someone thinks, feels, or behaves can be thought of as
instructional. Because of this, the Philippine government has made ensuring universal access to
education a top financial priority (Article XIV, Section 5, of the Philippine Constitution of 1987).
Success is made possible via education and diligence. How something is done or not determines its
performance. The importance it has for society makes its relevance stand out. According to
educational jargon, performance is defined as academic achievement, which is the outward sign of a
student's study habits, which are created and strengthened through education. Good study habits can
be developed and are beneficial for academic work as well as career advancement. Because of this
link, which cannot be ignored, a student's academic performance and study habits to a considerable
part contribute to determining their future. According to popular consensus, pupils who practice
effective study habits are more likely to succeed than those who don't. According to (Dirk Ifenthaler
et al.,2020) academic success involves both the effective completion of individual learning tasks to
thr least extent possible and the successful completion of a first degree in higher education to the
greatest extent possible. This calls for concern about variables that are frequently associated with
academic success (Siahl& Maiyo, 2015). "Study habits are defined as the consistent behavior one
exhibits while learning and acquiring new knowledge. It is true that developing a productive and
effective study habit will make high school meaningful and difficult. Additionally, it is a requirement
for living a good and prosperous life soon. However, if the pupils do not have strong study habits,
this could be the cause of their poor results, failure in the subject, or school dropout. And it is the
main issue in the vast majority of schools, if not the entire nation (Venturina, G., 2014) In order to
perform well academically, students should model healthy study habits and establish them. Teachers
and other faculty members at the school have seen makes them less attentive and interested in
learning and negatively impacts academic performance thus degrading the excellence of their studies.
This study addressed the increasing importance of the student’s academic achievement measured by
the test scores, through examining study habits of students in its relation.By encouraging proper
study habits through the use of both the internet and their peers, students can practice these habits in
a comfortable and engaging atmosphere thus improving their efficiency in learning and allowing for
the development of academically excellent students. It is important to know the relationship between
a good study habit and its respective academic performance to provide some recommendation on
how to improve one’s performance. They become less focused and interested in what they are
learning as a result, which has a detrimental effect on their academic performance and lowers the
caliber of their education. By examining study habits of students in relation to test scores, this study
addressed the growing significance of students' academic achievement as measured by test scores. By
promoting good study habits through the use of the internet and their peers, students can practice
these habits in a comfortable and engaging environment, improving their learning efficiency and
enabling the development of academically excellent students. To make suggestions on how to
improve one's performance, it is crucial to understand the connection between a healthy study habit
and one's individual academic achievement.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researcher will use a quantitative research design in gathering information

to determine the effects of blended learning on academic performance. The

researcher will gather the data through frequency count and percentage. Weighted

mean will be used as measure to assess the level of the usage of Facebook and its

effects on the living activities of students` and education.

Respondents of the study

Purposive sampling was utilized by the researchers to select the respondents.

Based on their average GPA in grade 11 the researchers selected the top 10 and
poorest 10 students in grade 11.

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted at Sto. Nino National High School located at
Barangay Poblacion Purok Lapu-Lapu Village Sto. Niňo South Cotabato.
