Tutorial 2 — The Navier-Stokes Equations

1. The fluid with constant film thickness h flows downward on a slanted flat plate with
angle q as shown in Fig. T2.1 with the velocity profile given below:
𝑢(𝑦) = 𝐶𝑦(2ℎ − 𝑦) , 𝑣 = 𝑤 = 0 .
(a) Determine the expression representing the constant C in terms of density r,
gravitational acceleration g and dynamic viscosity µ,
(b) Calculate the flowrate per unit width q in terms the same variables as in (a).

2. Mineral oil SAE 30 having density 912 kg/m3 and viscosity 0.38 N×s/m2 flows
steadily between a gap made by two parallel horizontal fixed plates where the
distance between the plates is 4 mm. If the flow is laminar, body forces are neglected
and pressure drop along the flow is 30 kPa/m, calculate:
(a) Flowrate per unit width,
(b) Magnitude and direction of shear stress acting on the bottom plate,
(c) Velocity in the middle of the gap.
Answers: (a) 42.1 × 10$# m2 /s;
(b) 60 Pa; (c) 0.158 m/s.
