AND HOW ARE THEY
The earliest shoe prototypes
were soft, made from
wraparound leather, and
resembled either sandals or
moccasins. Women and men
shoes were similar in europe. In
the early 1800’s, women’s and
men’s shoes finally began to
differ from one another in style,
color, heel, and toe shape
toes, and this change is reflected in
human feet beginning in the Middle

One of the oldest shoes were
sandals. in 17th and 18th century
England, old, worn-out shoes were
concealed in the rafters and
chimneys of homes. Erik Trinkaus
has argued that wearing footwear
produces physical changes in the
Paleolithic period.
Sneakers would have never exist
without Charles Goodyear’s
invention with rubber in 1839. He
saw an opportunity for
technological advancement when
he purchased hundreds of rubber
life preservers in 1834 that melted
in the New York City summer
heat. the first rubber-soled sneaker
was made in the 1860s for croquet,
where the potential for grass stains
and damage to the lawn needed a
shoe with a durable and flexible
sole.

In 1924 British runners Harold Abrahams and
Eric Liddell won medals in the Paris
Olympics wearing shoes designed by J.W.
Foster, founder of Reebok. Where Their
story was told in the movie "Chariots of
Fire.” in 2000, The San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art hosted an exhibit called "Design
Afoot: Sneaker Design, 1995-2000". Said the
museum: "Sneakers are not just functional
playthings: they are part of the way in which
we present ourselves to the world. They are
an essential part of the uniform of the urban
nomad."
Sneakers became footnotes in the history of the Civil Rights movement. In 1965, I Spy was a
weekly TV drama to feature a black actor who was Bill Cosby in a role. His character, a fun-
loving CIA agent going undercover as a tennis coach, habitually wore white Adidas sneakers,
easily identifiable by their prominent trio of stripes
Sneakers played a more explicit part at the 1968 Olympic
Games in Mexico City, where American gold medalist
sprinter Tommie Smith and his bronze medal-winning
teammate, John Carlos, removed their Puma Suedes and
mounted the medal podium in their stocking feet, to
symbolize African-American poverty

plimsolls were invented, they had no left or right foot and
were dubbed “sneakers” as the user could sneak around
without being heard It was in 1890 that Britain joined the
trainer game when J.W. Foster and Sons (better known
now as Reebok) developed some of the earliest running
spikes for athletes
