Hypothesis
If someone use eggshells in their hydroponic lettuces
in the germination face the lettuces is gona grow
faster, because the eggshell will decompose and give
nutrients to the lettuces.
SCIENCE FAIR PHASE 2
Second hypothesis

 If we use eggshell in our hydroponic culture as a sustrate

for lettuce in the germination phase, then the lettuces is
going to grow faster because one of the basic needs of a
plant growing is nutrients and between the four sustrates
the one with more nutrients is the eggshell. So it will work
better for the plant to grow.

Materials and coasts
 10 lettuce seedlings: 2 thousand pesos
 1 bag of cotton: 3 thousand pesos
 Coconut shell: 10 thousand pesos
 Eggshells: 12 thousand pesos
 Rice seed peal:10 thousand pesos
 Water: Free
 Hydroponic stand:
 Plastic cups,tami,9oz 3thousend pesos 3 thousand pesos
 Oasis:10 thousand
 A balsa wood table of 70x70cm: 10 thousand peso
 Wick: 1 thousand pesos
 Total cost of : 70 thousand pesos
Procedure
1. Create a hydroponic stand

1.Take one plastic cup

2.Fill the cup until is half
3.With balsa wood draw a circle with radius of 3.5 cm
4.Cut a little hole in the center of the balsa wood circle, the hole
should be 0.5 radius
5.Insert the balsa wood circle in the cup
6.Take the seedling and take the dirt off(if the seedling dosent have
dirt this step is not required)
7.In the tip of the seedling roots attach a little bit of wick.
8.Put the the sustrate in the cup(leave a little hole were you could
insert the roots of the seedling trough the hole on the circle.Put one
of the sustrate for each cup).
9.In the tip of the seedling roots attach a little bit of wick.
10.Put the seedling trough the hole
of the balsa wood circle.
11.Hog the plant
12 With the oasis create cylinder that sustain the plant
14.Repeat the procedure two times for each sustrate(Also do this steps
the control)

2. Measure your plant

3. Every three days give 5oz of water to the plant
4. Weekly record the height and weight of the plant

MATERIALS:

Water

Lettuce seeds(1 bag)
Electric water pump (1)
Scotch tape
Black paint (1 cup)
Wood sticks (2)

Substratum ( coconut, cotton and
eggshells)"Control: Regular Soil"
INTRODUCTION:
Hydroponic substrates are used in hydroponic systems to attach a
plant's roots. Essentially, hydroponic substrates are different types of
soilless grow media.
Which provide roots a point at which they can attach, help foster
better ventilation, and retain moisture. However, hydroponic
substrates are mainly inert, so plants require a nutrient solution to
provide minerals and other essential elements for growth.

For hydroponic cultures, substrates are essential because they

promote plant growth. This saves money because the crops
yield more, use less water are healthier use less space so you don't
have to use forests for farming and this contributes to a
sustainable, way of doing agriculture.
PROCEDURE:
1. First buy the materials

2. Second create your Hydroponic stand:

1. Wash the container very well.

2. Paint the outside of the container with black paint.
3. Let the container dry.
4. Draw 2 dots in each side of the container.
5. Drill where the dots are drawn.
6. Put the wood sticks in the wholes that were drilled and attach
them with a screw.
7. With 4 popsicle sticks ensemble the seeder.
8.Put the Electric water pump in the container so the plant get
irrigation, but it doesn't inundate.

3. Third seed phase

1. Put all the substrates in the seeder spaces
2.Seed the lettuce
3. Each week put nutrients
DATA TABLE:
Plant growth
Substrate Day #1 Day #2 Day # 3 Day # 4 Day # 5 Average
Coconut 1 cm 3 cm 6 cm 8.5 cm 8.9 cm 5.48 cm
Fiber
Eggshell 1 cm 0 cm 0 cm 0 cm 0 cm 0.2 cm
Regular 1 cm 3 cm 6 cm 8 cm 8.5 cm 5.3 cm
Soil
Cotton 1 cm 3 cm 6 cm 8.5 cm 9 cm 5.5 cm
DATA AND GRAPHS:
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion the best substratum for hydroponic crops are cotton or coconut
fiber because they increase the plants growth. The hypothesis was wrong
because the eggshell killed our plants, the control group was regular soil and
it is also good for plant growth. So for concluding the experiment the best
substrate for a hydroponic to grow is cotton.
