In 2017, Mintel estimates that UK music industry income from physical, digital and streaming
increased by 15% to £831 million, in large part due to a 55% increase in income from streaming to
£425 million. Income from physical declined by 2% in 2017 while income from digital downloads fell
by 23%.

Audio streams made up over half of music consumption in 2017

The BPI (British Phonographic Industry) has reported that there was a 9.5% increase in music
consumption across all formats in terms of volume in 2017, with 135.1 million albums streamed,
downloaded or purchased. Audio streams now make up 50.4% of UK music consumption following
an increase of 51% in streams to 68 billion. Data from BPI shows that the renewed interest in vinyl
records continues to grow, with 4.1 million vinyl records sold in 2017, up 28% year on year (see
Market Segmentation section of this Report).

New rules introduced for Official Singles Charts to help new artists

In July 2017 saw changes made to the Official UK Singles chart. Rules were implemented meaning
that one act could not have more than three songs in the singles chart at one time. The change was
made due to the fact that streaming has enabled one artist to occupy many places in a chart at one
time (see Market Drivers section of this Report).
