ASSIGNMENT # 2
Topic:
To verify Hooke’s Law and spring constant ( k )

Introduction: (Experiment details)

This experiment was performed to observe Hooke’s law that states: Within the elastic limit, the
expansion or compression is directly proportional to the
force applied in the form of axial load”.

We observe this law using brass spring which was attached

to the load applied vertically. When the load increases the
spring shows expansion which was noted by the pointer,
pointing scale.

Same process was done for the compression of the spring as

the load was increased the compression was observed from
the pointer.

Using Hooke’s law expression: F = -K x

The value of spring constant K can be calculated.

And from the observations taken it can be seen that force applied in the form of load is directly
proportional to the expansion or compression.

Importance:

This is one of constitutional equations, describing stress and strain relationship. It allows to
calculate how load affects the body. The Hooke's Law became a foundation of strength of
material science which is vital for engineering and construction. Hooke’s law is the fundamental
principle behind manometer, spring scale, balance wheel of the clock.

We perform this experiment to practical observe the stress and strain relation that how load
effects the spring what changes the force of weight can cause change in spring.
Applications:

Shock absorbers-rigid springs attached to the each

wheel of the vehicle, compressive forces in the spring
counteract the vertical up and down movements of
the vehicle, enabling a smooth journey.

Self – reloading weapons-When the strings of the

crossbow is stretched, whe released the tension in
the string propels the bow forward. A spring
pushes another bow upwards into position for
firing.

Stockbridge damper-used to minimize vibration of power

transmission lines caused by winds or birds.

Spring scale-when a person steps onto the scale the spring is

connected to the needle and moves across the scale. When the
person steps off. The spring recoils and the needle go back to
the zero graduation mark,
