JAZZ DUETS FOR SAXOPHONE

By Greg Yasinitsky

B^PB
JAZZ DUETS FOILSAXOPJHONE
By Greg Yasinitsky

Playing duets is a great way to work on style, phrasing, intonation and blend, and
it's a fun way to make music with friends. This collection of jazz duets includes some
great American standards by George Gershwin, Cole Porter and others; a jazz classic by
Dizzy Gillespie; and a few originals composed especially for this book.

These duets may be played on El> saxophones: two altos, two baritones or an
alto/baritone combination; or they may be played on two Bl> saxophones: two tenors, two
sopranos or a soprano/tenor combination.

A variety of dynamics is employed throughout the duets, and the jazz articulations
and phrasings are clearly marked. All the duets should be swung, cap accents should be
played short and a light tongue should be used for the offbeat phrasing on eighth-note
lines. I suggest listening to the CD for phrasing, articulation and style interpretation. The
enclosed CD includes my overdubbed playing of all the duets, first played on alto
saxophones and then played on tenor saxophones. These duets may be played either by
yourself with the CD or with a friend without the CD. To play the duets with the CD,
simply turn off one of the stereo channels.

I hope you have as much fun playing these jazz duets as I had writing and record-
ing them for you.

Greg Yasinitsky
