NYEPI Day (Silent Day)

Silent day only celebrate especialy in Bali. Silent Day or Nyepi depand the balinese calendar
(1 month : 35 days), so it’s have a special calculate.

In the place where celebrate the silent day / NYEPI, every people can’t go outside their
house or make noisy voice. Thats why they call it “silent Day”. The street / the others public place will
be empty (i mean realy empty, no car no people and no voice). I have seen the street in silent day,
it’s like ghost city because too quiet. Silent Day / Nyepi is one day after Caka new year (lots of people
make ogoh-ogoh, bring torch and make noisy voice).

In Silent Day, the family member just stay in their house, eating balinese traditional food and
make closer relationship with the other family member. In Bali there’s 4 rule in celebrate the Silent
day, the balinese call the rule “Catur Bhrata Penyepian” (catur : 4).

There’s :

1. Amati Geni : should not turn the fire / lighting

2. Amati Lelungan : should not be making noise
3. Amati Lelanguan : should not go outside
4. Amati Karya : should not work

To make sure Catur Bhrata Penyepian not infringed, each banjar choosen two or three Pecalang
(traditional police) to get around. Pecalang only allowed out during the celebration of Nyepi.

Silent Day is a very important day for the balinese because Silent Day mark the turn of the Caka new
year.
