NEW POLLING DATA INDICATE WIDESPREAD SUPPORT FOR SUPREME

COURT EXPANSION AMONG PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATIC BASE VOTERS

New polling data released today by the 1/20/21 Project indicate widespread support for
Supreme Court expansion among the most progressive Democratic base voters.
Because progressives are more likely than moderates to vote in primary elections, the data
may underscore an incentive for Democratic presidential candidates to endorse Court
expansion during the campaign next year.

Respondents were asked whether they agreed, disagreed or had no views on the statement,
“The next Democratic President should expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court,
allowing them to make more judicial appointments in the future.” Individuals who are active
in a progressive group such Indivisible or Swing Left were more likely to support
expanding the Court (+38) than those who are not (+15).

Among all Democrats, the new data indicate that 43 percent agree that the Court should be
expanded, 28 percent disagree, and 23 percent are undecided. Two-way support (excluding
individuals who are undecided), indicate 61 percent support for expansion.

White Democrats are less supportive of the idea of court expansion (+7) than Democrats of
color (+30), though net support is positive among both groups. Support is similar among
younger (+17) and older Democrats (+15), and women Democrats (+20) are more supportive
than men (+11).

Methodology: The 1/20/21 Project added a question to a Data for Progress/YouGov Blue poll
of 1,152 registered Democrats, weighted to be nationally representative of all registered
Democrats. The poll was fielded online between October 11-15. Margin of error +/- 3.3%.

Numbers may not equal 100 due to rounding. See https://today.yougov.com/about/about-

the-yougov-panel/ for methodological details. The 1/20/21 Project is a national persuasion
campaign urging Democrats to expand the courts after they re-take control of the White
House and Congress. Visit www.12021project.org for more information about the project.
