CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The trend nowadays, part-time job, this is a new issue when the students is forced

to work because of financial problems just to support their studies. Part-time job has

been considered as one of the factors affecting the academic performance of the student,

with an increasing number of students taking part-time job outside the campus based on

the one article found “Optimism and risk for Job Burnout” (2015), it stated that money

is the main reason why they need to work. The students work while attending school has

a negative effect like stress which caused emotional and physical exhaustion to the

students. (Moris Triventi’s, 2014) stated that part-time job has positive and negative

effect. When the student working at low-intensity it has positive effects but in higher-

intensity jobs with 35 hours or more per week tended to have negative effects to the

students (Gorgulho, et al 2012) stated that the disadvantages of having a part-time job

are focuses on the risk to the health of student that having work while attending class.

(Rajeev Darolia’s, 2014) also stated that part-time and full-time students tend to spend

less time studying. This can lead to delayed graduation dates and more debt from more

years of schooling. (Weiss et al. (2014), and Robert & Saar (2012) said that the role of

the coherence of the job performed during higher education with the field of study for

subsequent labor market performance. Their analyses confirm better employment

opportunities when working in a job well-matched with the field of study.

So far, researchers on the involvement of the students taking part-time job largely

conducted at Mountview College (MVC) in all levels.

8

This study aims to know the reason why the part-timer need to work and its positive and

negative effects to the students and also their perspectives on why they have part-time

jobs. For the students of Mountview College (MVC) and also to know the effects on their

job to their academic performance if it has negative or positive in the school year 2018-

2019.

The purpose of this study is to give information to the part-time students, parents,

teachers, and for them to know its corresponding effects.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to know the perspectives of part-time student among Mountview

College Students S/Y 2018-2019.

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. As a part-time student, what are the effects of having a part-time job?

2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of being a part-time student to

oneself?

3. What are the reasons why student having a part-time job?

9

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will be a great benefit to the following:

Students: The result will provide or give some knowledge on part-time students

and how can they balance their own time. It will give the students a realization that part-

time job is useful to sustained your needs and can help their parents in their financial

needs.

Teachers: The given data would guide the teachers on what to do with the students

who’s been a part-time student. The teachers would be able to understand the students on

why they always late in the class and can’t focus on their lesson.

Parents: The given data would guide the parents to understand his/her children,

on why their children have low grades and why they need to be a part-time student.

Instead motivate them and give them advice.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

Theory of Stress

According to Hans Selye develop his theory of the General Adaption Syndrome

(GAS), a stress model that explains the physiological response of the body due to stress.

These stress responses are divided into three (3) stages: alarm, resistance, & exhaustion.

First, alarm (the fight or flight mechanism) that is triggered in order to prepare the body

for a physical activity and allowing it to protect or defend itself against the potential

threat. Second stage of the body stress is response, it is characterized when the level of

stress was lowering due to the body’s allocation of energy to damaged tissue as a result,

the stress response during this situation is minimized. Thirdly, the third stage which is

exhaustion, the body cannot fight longer the stressors because of the depletion or lack of

energy resources. Thus, if the cause of stress is not resolve immediately, health issue may

occur. Selye’s theory of (GAS) represent a biological explanation of how the body

responds and adapts to the presence of stressors.

Theory of Time Management

This study is anchored on the theory of Abraham Harold Maslow. The theory by

Maslow effectively combined time management with our needs. He built hypothetical

pyramid. Here is physiological level of needs are water, shelter, etc. Located at base of

the pyramid while self-actualization was placed on the top of the pyramid. In between of

the two (2) extreme levels the safety, human bonding and self-esteem were positioned.

The five (5) levels were examples of different strata of human life.
13

The theory doesn’t specify the time period required to attain them, but it actually helps

you to understand the importance of these elements in year life. Once you understand

your needs, you can differentiate between them and set a time period during which you

can fulfill them. The first motive behind earning money is to meet the physical demands

of our body, and then we become capable of taking care of our family and other concerns.

A greater portion of our life and most time is dedicated to improving standards of living

by satisfying ourselves in every possible way. Maslow said once we have plenty of

resources to that requires minimum time, one can plan road map by referring of hierarchy

of needs with incorporation of effective time management.

Theory of Health

According to (Steven R. Shaw, 2015) student who are unhealthy are at higher risk

for school problems than students who are free from medical problems. Students with

poor health have a higher probability of school failure, grade retention, and dropout. The

relationship between student health and academic success is complex. Common

manageable factors of student health are nutrition, maintaining healthy weight, and

physical fitness. Through a comprehensive literature review the relationships among

school achievement and nutrition, maintaining healthy weight, and physical fitness are

examined. Furthermore, the efficacy of educational programs to improve nutrition,

maintain healthy weight, and increase physical fitness is evaluated. The complexity of the

relationship among variables is presented and areas for future research and practice for

school psychologists are described.

14

Summary

Being a part-time student is crucial, because their time for family, studying,

working, and also to their health is affected. It is crucial because the student has

limitations to enjoy their teenage life.

Mountview College have three (3) levels: Senior high school (SHS) 11, 12 and

College proposed by our government particularly by the Department of Education

(DepEd) to help the students and build the skills on what choice to specialize by Senior

High School students (SHS) preferred and assisted to their tertiary Education, and help

them to develop the skill of the student which can also help them to have work and they

can also apply their learnings in their future jobs. College students already have a

different experience in doing part-time jobs because they used their skills and learnings to

support their financial needs. There are also different effects in working while studying or

having a part-time job like low grades, stress and health disorder.

All of the theory there on the research will explain the different effects of working

while studying and its advantages and disadvantages. Working while studying also help

the student to experience the challenges of their parents in making money and also it

helps the student to be thrifty, independent increase confident and gain knowledge.
15

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

1. The students of Mountview College (MVC) have different reasons why they need to part-

time job.

2. The result of this study will have negative and positive effect to the part-time student.

3. The percentage of the data gathered to the students of Mountview College (MVC) who

part-time student.

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY

The following assumptions are made about this study and the circumstances

surrounding it.

1. The participants in the study will understand and follow the instruction related to our

research topic.

2. The students can apply their skills & knowledge to their preferred part-time work.

3. The students of Mountview College (MVC) can balance their time in studying &

working.

4. The students will have health-awareness conscious to their oneself.

16

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presented the review of related literature and studies related to effects

to the part-time students. This chapter includes the following topic: The advantage and

disadvantages of working while studying to the students of Mountview College (MVC),

theoretical framework, and summary.

According to “Optimism and risk for Job Burnout”, (2015) stated that money is

the main key in college in which students acquire tremendous amount of debt of pay off.

Many college students work while attending school which in return has an effect. A

recent article has shown that there is a psychological and physical toll that takes upon

student who try to juggle both. From working and attending school, Stress becomes the

main setback in which affects their academic performances. Taking a survey of 225

participants of student, it showed that stress was a main cause for these student which

caused emotional and physical exhaustion. Our survey tries to study how students deal

with stress when they work or not work while attending school. Stress plays the main role

in all factors for these students attending a university. Sleep is one constant that college

students lack. A recent article shows that 50% of student surveyed at a university is sleep

deprived. An average amount of students has a range of from difficulty falling asleep to

difficulty staying asleep. This lack of sleep syndrome is known as sleep phase syndrome

is an important problem students face at school which affects them from a range of

academic performance. Sleep is a necessity but the life style college students acquire

from coming into universities affects them severely.

According to Moris Triventi’s he looked into the effect of working in higher

education. He found that working at low-intensity had positive effects but higher-
17

intensity jobs, 35 hours or more per week, tended to have negative effects. Some of the

positive effects are increased independence, ability to budget, managing a schedule, and

gaining soft skills, such as communication and problem-solving skills. Some of the

negative effects are higher risk of dropping out, delayed graduation rates, and negative

effects on academic performance. He found that full-time workers tend to have less time

for academic studies and school activities. Non-workers average 17.0 hours of studying

per week and part time and full-time workers also attend class less time per week. Part-

time workers in this study were able to deal with the effects of working while in school

(Triventi’s, 2014).

According to Rajeev Darolia’s (2014) study, there was a correlation between

number of credits completed and number of hours worked per week. This study states that

80 percent of students work at some point in their undergraduate program and numbers of

hours worked per week increases each year. Some students take fewer credits due to work

commitments. Part-time and full-time students tend to spend less time studying. This can

lead to delayed graduation dates and more years of schooling. The time-to-degree ratio is

higher, which in turn costs the students less future earnings. The study points out the

negative effect of working to be lack of time for school-based activities and leisure

activities, which can help with overall health.

According to Weiss et al. (2014), and Robert & Saar (2012), the role of the

coherence of the job performed during higher education with the field of study for

subsequent labor market performance. Their analyses confirm better employment

opportunities when working in a job well-matched with the field of study. Hence, also in

terms of employment outcomes there is a heterogeneous impact of working while

18

studying according to specific characteristics of the job performed during university

career, in particular when considering the relationship between the field of study and the

job carried out during higher education.

According to (Gorgulho, et al., 2012) one of the disadvantages of being a student

while holding a job is that they are often short on time and commonly find themselves

with limited time to study, sleep, and maintain healthy eating habits and one of the main

complaints among working students is that they find themselves without enough time to

eat right instead of consuming healthy foods, such as fruit and whole grains, working

students often grab a quick meal comprised of low quality foods that contain sugar and

high sodium. This is not to say that students should feel discouraged and not work while

in college, but instead be mindful of the commitment and plan accordingly. For example,

students who work every day night benefit from a 7-day food preparation technique at the

beginning of every week.

Many researchers focus on working after higher education but little research the

effects of working while in higher education. Recently, higher education has been

increasing in tuition and other costs that go into attending college, this has had an effect

on students. Mainly, they are looking for jobs while in school to help cushion some of

those costs and everyday expenses.

19

DEFINITION OF TERMS

These following words are defined by the researchers to help the readers to

understand the content of our research and the words that can be used.

Academic Task – A kind of task in school that the part-time students need to fulfill.

Decision Making – A type of action in choosing what they want and it is also a final

decision.

Working Experience – This is the main reason why the student need to work while

studying. Stress – A type of feeling it can be emotional or physical that caused them feel

frustrated, angry, and nervous.

Part-time students – A person who work to have an extra income to provide their needs

and wants.

Lower-Intensity – Easy works that have low number of hours per week.

Higher-Intensity – Difficult works that have high number of hours per week.

Time Management – It is ability to manage / balance their time. The other term is multi-

tasking.

Psychological Needs – The needs of people in our daily lives like water, foods, shelter,

clothes, etc.

CHAPTER II

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presented the research methodology utilized in this study. This

chapter will cover all aspects concerning the overall data in the research. This includes

the (1) research design, (2) respondents of the study, (3) setting of the study, (4) data

gathering procedure, and (5) data analysis.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study aims to discuss the research design. The materials and instruments to

be used for gathering data are the questionnaire-checklist composed of 4 items. English

language was used in the survey questionnaires. The research method is a survey because

we would just give our respondents the questionnaire for them to fill out the needed data.

It is appropriate because our research is not a behavioral research that would need

observation on the respondents. This method consists of using a researcher-made

questionnaire, which had undergone a series of test for validation and verification from

several experts.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of this study are 30 selected students of Mountview College who

were experienced being part-time job. The population of the study was a part-time

students of Mountview College. The entire population is 51 students. And were chosen

through quota sampling method: this method purposively gathered the profile information

of all the Senior High School (SHS) Grade 11,12 and College student in Mountview

College.

SETTING OF THE STUDY

This study was conducted in Mountview College on February 11, 2019 at time of

1:00am-2:00pm among the Grade 11, 12, and College Students.

Founded in Singapore in 1986, Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) pioneers and

specializes in providing the necessary Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

skills and competencies to students via revolutionary curricula and methodologies.

The idea of putting up a similar school in the Bicol Region did materialize when,

on October 24, 2012, Naga CAL Institute was established in Naga City but with the

primary purpose of offering world-class, business and technical-vocational courses in ICT

and other technical courses registered under TESDA.

By the following year, the management of Naga CAL Institute has applied for its

college status with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and has been given its

first endorsement by CHED last February 25, 2013. Its initial government permit was

granted by CHED to operate its first Baccalaureate Course (Bachelor of Science in

Entrepreneurship) on April 21, 2015 for School Year 2015-2016.

22

In December 5, 2014, the name Mountview College, Inc. was adopted and

registered with SEC amending and replacing its former name Naga CAL Institute.

With the implementation of the K-12 Program of the Department of Education,

the Mountview College has been granted by the Department its provisional permit to

operate Senior High School Program beginning School Year 2017-2018. Mountview

College hopes to have a fruitful partnership with the Department of Education in offering

the Senior High School program to students in the years to come.

Mountview College was owned by Mr. Anthony “Anton” Dy Prieto it is a

businessman. Every October 24, Mountview College celebrate the annual foundation day.

Mountview College was located at 2nd Floor. ALDP Plaza Mall, Roxas Ave.,

Diversion Road. Triangulo, Naga City. This was a private school consisted a total number

of fifteen (15) rooms including their school library, computer laboratory, administrator

office etc. Each classroom can accommodate ten to twenty-nine (10-29) students

depending on the grade level. Their rooms were fully air conditioned and also have

complete materials needed for the students. As a matter of fact, the school came up with

different concerns for their school but the researcher chosen the problem regarding the

part-time students.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

There are 30 respondents of Mountview College students. Each of them were

given survey questionnaire having four-item and were asked different types of questions.

Every respondent answered within 5-10 minutes.

23

Consequently, those who were not part-time student were not included in this

research. Out of 51 students, 30 students had a part-time student.

To answer research questions, an survey questionnaire technique is used. Survey

questionnaire is one of the techniques used in quantitative research to collect data from a

person or more directly or indirectly asking some questions to them which correlate to

research topic.

Also, the researchers had read and explained each question loudly in a vernacular

dialect to the class and gave some specific examples that let students understand fully the

questions given and guided them upon answering so they can answer it whole honesty.

The gathered data was now then ready for the data analysis.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data gathered was analyzed through statistical procedure for social science

(SPSS). The type of descriptive statistics that was used was percentage and frequency.

Accordingly, the results are presented in percentage and frequency, including the mean,

mode, median, variance, standard deviation, and range.

24

CHAPTER IV

DISCUSSION OF DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretations of the results with the aid of

that related literature presented in chapter II. The main purpose of this study is to present

the significant experiences of being part-time students, Next, to present its advantages

and disadvantages to oneself. Lastly, to know the student’s reasons as to why they

commit to juggle work and studying.

According to Sarah & Hudson (2005), students’ involvement in employment has

positive impact to develop career-related skills. It is based on hands-on experience that

cannot be gained in the classroom alone. Whatever the reasons the students have in taking

part-time job, there is a popular belief that student do not tend to have higher academic

achievement, because their focus time of study has been divided with their working time.

Better academic achievement only can be achieving by students who spend more time on

academic related activities outside of class e.g., reading the text, completing assignment,

studying, and preparing reports.

Effects of having Part-time Job

The result of the study showed that the effects of having part-time job while

studying are Low-grades or Failing grades, haggard and stress, tardiness, cannot passed

the requirement on time with a percentage of (6.7%). Of the overall respondents, this

strongly supports the study of Hans Selye (https://www.mytutor.co.uk/answers/9560/A-

Level/Psychology/Explain-the-main-features-of-Selye-s-General-Adaptation-Syndrome/)

in his GAS stress model stress is divided into 3 stages alarm, resistance, and exhaustion
32

the highest result in the effect of having part-time job one is the haggard and stress. It has

similarity with the study of Optimism and risk for Job Burnout (2015), when they are

exhausted and tired in juggling the work and school stress becomes the main setback in

which affects the students. Further, the study of Breeze et al., (2010), states that lateness

is synonymous with “tardiness” which implies being slow to act or slow to respond, thus

not meeting up with proper or usual timing. As the researcher found tardiness is one of

the highest effects in being part-time student, tardiness occurs when they are exhausted in

work and school.

Advantage of having Part-time Job

Furthermore, the results indicated that the most advantage of having part-time job while
studying are being independent, fast-learner, self-support, gain confidence, thrifty. This
strongly support the study of Reddy Chitra (Advantages of Working Part-Time, Retrieved
from https://content.wisestep.com/top-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-working-part-
time/) The advantages of working part-time it helps the students to boost up their self-
esteem similar with the results that the researchers found.

Disadvantages of having Part-time Job

The results indicated that one of the most disadvantages of having part-

time job is Skipping meal with the highest percentage of (16.7%). This strongly support

the study of Pope Tara-Parker (2007), and Kaushik, (2011), that breakfast has been

suggested to positively affect learning in children in terms of behavior, cognitive, and

school performance. To programmed significantly increased students’ academic

performance and significantly reduced absenteeism and tardiness and people often miss
33

meals because they get busy or are trying to lose weight. But how they skip meals, and

the amount they eat at their next meal, can affect their overall health. Second to the most

disadvantages of having part-time job is Lack of sleep with the highest percentage of

(13.3%). This support the study of Gilbert & Weaver, (2010), not everyone receives

adequate amounts of sleep in order to function properly throughout the day. These poor

performances as a result of poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation is especially evident

among college students. Since college students have such busy work, school, and social

schedules to keep up with, their sleep cycles become negatively affected by it. They tend

to have irregular sleep-cycles depending on the day of the week and report dissatisfaction

with sleep as a result of poor sleep quality.

Reason/s of having Part-time Job

The results indicate that one of the most reason why students need to have part-

time job are Working Experience and Personal Wants with a highest percentage of

(20.0%) this strongly support the study of Reddy Chitra state that part time jobs are the

best option for students as it gives them an opportunity to earn a little pocket money with

which they can pay some of their bills as well as it gives them enough time to focus on

their academic work. Having a full time job and simultaneously attempting to juggle

academic work is a near impossible task for any student. Having a part-time job works

out very well as it gives students a chance to gain some work experience and also gives

them something to include in their resume. Once they have graduated from college with

some work experience it gives them an edge over the fresher’s as they already know how

to conduct themselves in a professional manner and they have also gained some

organizational skills. Getting work experience is one of the best advantages of part time
34

workers. Second to the most reason/s of having why students need to have part-time job

is to aid their Financial problem with a highest percentage of (13.3%) this support the

study of Hemilton, (2015), state that as a university student, they have to faced many

problems. One of the most common problem is difficulty in paying college fees. Some of

the students did not get any loan or scholarship, so they have to depend on their they

parents. For those who came from poor background they are forced to work to gain extra

money to pay their fee. For students who are not able to balance between work and

academic, this will definitely affect their studies.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

The present study was conducted to present the effects and experiences of part-

time job to the students of MVC. It also aims to know its advantages and disadvantages

while studying and to provide significant reasons why students of MVC is having a part-

time job. Using recognition type survey, the respondents consisted of 30 students. A four-

item survey questionnaire was used to gathered information from Mountview College

(MVC). The researchers distributed survey questionnaires to different grade levels (Grade

11, 12 & College).

The result showed that Low Grades or Failing Grades, Haggard and Stress,

Tardiness and Cannot Passed the Requirements on Time are the significant experiences

faced by MVC part-time students (6.7%). And their advantage experiences as a part-time

student is being Independent, with the highest of (13.3%). Being Fast-Learner, Self-

Support and Gain Confidence are the top two advantages (10.0%), and lastly becoming

thrifty (6.2%). While the disadvantages of being part-time student is Skipping meal with

the highest (6.7%). and lack of sleep (13.3%). It was also found that the majority of the

respondents their reasons for having a part-time job is to have Working experience and to

fulfill their Personal wants with the highest (20.0%). and to provide for their Financial

Problem (13.3%).

This can suggest that being a part-time student may not entirely affect to individuals and

this could probably happen if they can manage their time. As what most of the

respondents answered, their reasons why they take part-time job is to seek work

experience. By having the experience of worked was to spend leisure time and to improve
36

his/her skills, so that it will make them easier to find a job in the future. Many companies

are looking for people who have enough work experience and are in line with their

capabilities to their preferred work. Another reason why they work is to earn money to

buy their personal wants. In regards to this, being a part-time student is usually popular

during every summer vacation like Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES),

it is an avenue for those students to have work. The said program is limited to 20-78 days

only and ages ranging from 15-30 years old are needed to be hired in the job. The

example of SPES position are administrative aide, student assistant, clerk, service crew,

cashier, encoder, etc. Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) can also encourages

not only working students but also out-of-school youth’s person to return to their studies.

Student needs financial support such as tuition fees, or school stuffs. Most of the school

are increasing their tuition fees and some of the student are under voucher but they cannot

fully pay their tuition fees and also miscellaneous fee. And also the price of products is

increasing and aside of that, the contributions in school activities that they need to attend

like Acquaintance party, Christmas party, Team building, Foundation day etc.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scopes of this research are the students of Mountview College of any year

level and course and started on the month of July 2018 to March 2019.

This study focused on the perspective on the studying in between working of

students in Mountview College and its effects to Academic Performance.

37

The number of respondents are limited in Mountview College; this research are

only those students that are currently enrolled at Mountview College. As the study

present factual data gathered, through descriptive survey about the effects of being part-

time student in Mountview College. The succeeding discussion are the limitation of the

study. Moreover, the period of time when the survey questionnaire was given, it is

considered as one of the limitations in the study. For the reason that all of the respondents

have equal time to answer the survey questionnaire that was given a time of 5-10 minutes

only for every participant. And the respondent was 30 persons only.

RECOMMENDATION

The following are some of the suggestions of the study based on the results that

has been gathered:

For part-time students, it is recommended that they must know their schedule in

work that is suitable in the schedule of their class and they should know first the kind of

work that they are entering if they can do it or not. This could benefit in helping the part-

time student to avoid the harmful effects brought by work in their health.

For the students, it is recommended that if they want to work as a part-time

student they must know how to manage their time and they should maintain their

academic performance. Being a part-time student is not difficult they must have patience

and eagerness to achieve their goals in life.

For the parents, it is recommended that they must have time to talk with their

children. In this way, they will notice the actions of their children. As a parent, help and

guide them with their problems, give them an advice and motivate them.
38

For the future researchers, it is recommended that they must be able to use the

findings of the study for further research and investigation particularly related to the

academic performance of part-time students since there are very limited local studies that

can be found exploring this particular subject or concern.

For the guidance counselors, it is recommended that they must have given

discipline to part-time student like giving advice to those part-time students for them to

maintain their grades and their academic performance, so that they can graduate even if

they have part-time job. Therefore, in their work place they can apply the good manner

and right conduct to the costumer and other people they can socialized.

For the teachers, it is recommended that they must give a chance to considered the

part-time student to pass the late requirements that they need to pass and to fill their

inadequate requirements.

For the schools/institutions, it is recommended that they must have to offer a job

to the part-time student like student assistant (S.A), that suitable to their schedule in

school. On-campus employment is due to enhance integration with the institution,

including involvement with other students and with faculty. In addition, on-campus jobs

often include responsibilities with academic components.

For the business with part-time students, it is recommended that they must

understand and consider the reasons of the student on why they are late on work hours

and they must give high salary to the part-time student to fulfill their personal needs and

to be able to put them in a higher position if they see the student has determination to
39

their work and they can apply it to their future work, build their own small business like

sari-sari store so that it can help to sustain their everyday finances.
