The 10th Tiger Claw Elite KungFuMagazine.com Championship

T
o make it to ten years in anything today
is no easy feat. Fads a come and go
faster than a spinning fidget spinner
(remember those?). In today’s fast-paced
world of quick social media hits, it’s hard to make
something last anymore. It’s even harder to have
something grow year after year, but that’s exactly
what we have done with our Tiger Claw Elite
KungFuMagazine.com Championship. It started
out as a way for us at Tiger Claw to give back to
the local community, a place to showcase skills and
compete against other skills. It has turned into an
event that brings people from around the country
and even around the world to San Jose, California,
for a celebration of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Every

Festival is a hard act to follow, but we’ve made
some major improvements for this year’s 10th Tiger

Over the last few years, we have seen huge numbers
of Songshan Shaolin competitors. So many schools
in the San Francisco Bay Area are run by masters
and coaches from the original Shaolin Temple

their students overwhelm tournament floors in

Tai Chi and Veterans Affairs Program

The Department of Veterans Affairs in Murfreesboro Tennessee now offers the only adaptive Tai
Chi class in the U.S.A. for veterans. A special pilot program, launched two years ago by Dr. Guo
Zibin, aspires to offer free Tai Chi lessons to veterans through VA programs. A paper published
in December 2016, Feasibility, qualitative findings and satisfaction of a brief Tai Chi mind–body
programme for veterans with post-traumatic stress symptoms (Complementary Medicine, Barbara
L Niles, et.al.) suggested that Tai Chi was a beneficial therapy for PTSD. Dr. Eric Schoomaker, the
former United States Army lieutenant general who served as the 42nd Surgeon General of the United
States Army and Commanding General of the United States Army Medical Command, endorsed Tai
Chi along with Qigong, acupuncture and other complementary therapies for opioid treatment. Tai Chi
continues to show benefits for diverse communities in impactful ways.

The Ancestral Master
of His Generation
Grandmaster Chen Yijiu was born in Fuzhou
in 1902. Starting at age 5, he learned from folk
masters several traditional local styles such
as Golden Lion Boxing (䠁⤞ᤣ), Dragon
Boxing (嗉ᖒᤣ), Tiger Boxing (㱾ᖒᤣ),
and Arhat Boxing (㖇≹ᤣ). During his late
teens, Chen spent time with his family in
Singapore operating a gold and jewelry shop,
where he continued to practice martial arts
including Muay Thai and Jujitsu. In 1920,
a famous Dog Boxing master from Fujian,
Chen Ayin (䱸䱯䬦), was involved in a case
of accidental homicide and fled to Singapore,
where for years he stayed with Chen Yijiu’s
family. In return, he taught the style of Dog
Boxing to Chen Yijiu, who trained diligently
and became very famous for his "Iron Leg"
skills, capable of bending steel bars and
withstanding hammer blows to the shins.
After beating a Russian challenger during a
public match in 1929, in which he shattered
one of the Russian's legs with continuous low
kicks delivered from the ground, he earned the
nickname Magic Legs Jiu (⾎㞯ҍ).

Chen Ayin received the Dog Boxing

style from his father Chen Biao (䱸ᖚ),
who, according to oral traditions, learned
clandestinely from a run-away Buddhist
nun. The legend, somehow consistent
with the narrative of other styles from
the same geography, mentions the
existence of a Shaolin Temple situated
near Qingyuanshan (␵Ⓚኡ) in the city
of Quanzhou, with a Bailian Nunnery (ⲭ
㧢ᓥ) located adjacent to the temple. The
story then suggests that during the Qing
dynasty (1644–1991) these temples often
took in laymen and laywomen (including
Ming supporters) as refugees, who,
disguised as monks and nuns, were later
involved in anti-Qing maneuvers, becoming
the focus of persecution and forced to flee
in all directions. This would explain how
Venerable Si Yue (ഋᴸབྷᐸ) escaped from
Quanzhou to Yongchun, finding shelter with
the Chen family and passing down the style
of Dog Boxing to Chen Biao in return.

It’s worth noting that origination myths of

this kind are a form of cultural symbolism
and folklore that should not be discarded or
ignored, but rather embraced as an inevitable
element of traditional Chinese martial
arts. In regards to Dog Boxing’s inclination

towards ground fighting techniques, Chen family’s lore proposes that

during the days of Venerable Si Yue, also known as "Magical Nun"
Si Yue (ഋᴸ⾎ቬ), a great percentage of women in the Quanzhou
area practiced foot-binding – the process of applying tight binding to
the feet starting at an early age to alter their shape and
size. Since this would severely limit their mobility
and balance, Venerable Si Yue developed this
system based on the observation of certain dog
attacking traits to allow women with bound
feet to defend themselves by delivering
surprise counters and finishing techniques
effectively from the ground – a notion
in line with how Grandmaster Chen
Yijiu conquered his much taller and
stronger adversary in 1929.

The Modern
Wushu Approach
Apart from the generic Nanquan divisions, the
championships in China often offer divisions for
Dog Boxing; however, as Master Perez clarifies,
“You may be able to find some athletes competing
in Dog Boxing, but not all of them represent the
formal style. There are some exceptions, but in
general most can pick up an existing routine and
tweak it to their personal preference. But these
athletes that we use as models have spent many
years of intensive training and achieved excellence
in Wushu basics. Therefore, they can create a
new routine in a few hours. I have seen them
do it. World champion He Jingde (օᮜᗧ) once
developed a Monkey Boxing (⥤ᤣ) routine for my
student, he based it on traditional, modern and
his personal vision, and 30 minutes later it evolved
into a fantastic routine, the most intense routine I
ever saw him perform.

“Professional athletes are incredibly

driven. They need to stay ‘cutting
edge’ or they can quickly lose
their spot on the team.”

“Professional athletes are incredibly driven.

They need to stay ‘cutting edge’ or they can quickly
lose their spot on the team. That’s another reason
why the ‘bar’ is so high there. More than likely,
in America it will take more time to develop these
skills. If practitioners lack the proper conditioning
and strengthening, injuries can result and their
athletic years can be drastically shortened. When
I teach Dog Boxing, we learn basics and use them
to develop the body strength progressively.
Performing kip-ups, dive rolls, coil ups and
falls is not easy and it takes time to develop
muscle and ligament strength and the body’s
toughness and resilience. In fact, I would
recommend using support for knees and back,
as well as practicing on a soft surface. We
focus on routine practice, and while training,
each move is broken down 3 ways: performance,
strength development, and application, so my
students can understand and explain and apply
each application.”

S
haolin Kung Fu encompasses a wide spectrum
of different styles. Nowadays, most people
think of bald robed monks from the original
Shaolin Temple on Songshan mountain range in
Henan, China. Shaolin’s warrior monks began
touring the world and disseminating their Kung Fu in the
mid-’90s, and over the last two decades the Kung Fu of
the Shaolin Temple of China, also known as Songshan
Shaolin Kung Fu, has spread exponentially. However,
with over a millennium-and-a-half years of history, there
are many other styles that originated at Shaolin Temple,
distinct from what the monks promulgate. These styles
rightfully bear the name. For several decades prior to
Shaolin’s globetrotting monks, Bak Sil Lum was the
dominant style representing Shaolin outside of China.
Bak Sil Lum (ेቁ᷇) literally means "Northern Shaolin"
in Cantonese. Kung Fu enthusiasts who were around
before the first Shaolin monks left China know Bak Sil
Lum. It is a traditional style of Kung Fu that upholds
fundamental strategies consistent with the principles
held sacred by Songshan Shaolin Kung Fu, yet untainted
by the acrobatics of Modern Wushu.

Attentive readers will notice something curious
about Bak Sil Lum. Why is “Northern Shaolin”
labeled in Cantonese, the language of the
south? This is due to the most prominent
master of Bak Sil Lum, Grandmaster Ku Yu-
Cheung (1894–1952 亗⊍ㄐ). In recent years,
Grandmaster Ku has also been referred to
by the Mandarin version of his name, Gu
Ruzhang, part of the general shift towards
pinyin romanization for all Chinese
names. It’s a niggling trend because

after 2007, he left the Wushu circuit and moved on.
“I realized a part of my soul would always be missing

It was October of 2009 when Ma first started taking lessons

Thumb Rings
One of the distinctive qualities of Chinese Archery is the use of thumb rings. Almost every museum with
Chinese artifacts will have some thumb rings in their collection, often made of jade. However, jade and
semi-precious stone thumb rings were more about adornment than practicality because the material is
too smooth. Bone or other porous materials were more common for actual combat archers. Thumb rings
are used throughout many traditions of Asian archery such as in Korea, Mongolia and India. Thumb rings
give the archer a more secure grip on a knocked arrow, which is critical when moving on a battlefield or
shooting from horseback. The earliest example of a Chinese thumb ring was found in the tomb of one of
China’s many famous women warriors, Lady Fu Hao (died 1200 BCE ႖ྭ). Lady Hao was one of the 64
wives of King Wu Ding (1250–1192 BCE ↖б). She rose to become the most powerful Shang general of

Traditional Chinese Bows
Because of the long history and vast geographic territory of China, Chinese bow designs come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
These days, Chinese bows are classified into a few broad categories:
(1) Xiaoshao-changbi (“small tip, long limb” ሿ〽䮯㟲). Designed for speed. A lot of Ming bows have this design, and you can
find depictions of these shapes in select Han dynasty (and earlier) artwork.
(2) Dashao-duanbi ( “big tip, short limb” བྷ〽⸝㟲). Designed for stability. You find variations of this design from late Han
through Ming dynasty (though the exact shape of the tips/ears of the bow may differ).
(3) Dashao-changbi (“big tip, long limb” བྷ〽䮯㟲). Designed for delivering a heavy arrow. The canonical examples are the large
Qing dynasty bows.

This goes for all areas of training,
including stances. If the student
can create an offensive or defensive
movement from a stance, then it
is considered a Shaolin technique.
Among the more commonly taught
offensive maneuvers are the use
of horse stance and front stance
in conjunction with throwing an
opponent with a rear reap (the
horse stance being the initial off-
balancing movement and the front
stance being the reap). The cross
stance can be used along with a
standing elbow lock to crash down
on the adversary's knee, and the
pu buu stance can be used to toss
an opponent in the other direction
with a pulling motion.

Ground Fighting
in Kung Fu
Ever since the early UFCs, ground
fighting has become popular. Kung
Fu does not completely ignore
the importance of fighting from
the ground. Shaolin Chin Na
includes techniques for subduing
an opponent on the ground.

With a little creativity, the

stance concept can be applied
on the ground in a grappling
context. For example, If you look
at xie bu
u, the cross stance, this

closely resembles a triangle
choke as done in Judo and
Brazilian Jujutsu. On the
ground, the cross stance
can be used as a choke by
capturing an opponent’s
neck and arm between the
legs while squeezing with
the legs to create pressure.
Practicing the xie bu stance

muscles needed for applying
the choke from the ground.

Another example of how stances can be adapted to

ground fighting is the horse stance. This famous
defensive position, known as the guard, involves
wrapping your legs around the opponent’s waist, to
prevent him from gaining a superior position. The
Japanese version used in traditional Jujitsu is known
as do jime (㜤㎎) and emphasizes an offensive rib-
crushing squeeze rather than just a defensive hold. The
Shaolin practitioner gains both defensive and offensive
techniques through horse stance practice. Gripping the
ground with the feet while bending the knees works the
thigh muscles, which transfers well to leg-scissoring an
opponent’s body while on the ground.

The one-legged stance being used to defend against a low kick

By practicing the many stances and transition
moves from one to another within the forms and
basics, one will develop a high level of coordination.
The movements are complex and difficult for a
reason. They are taking you above and beyond
what will be needed for an actual confrontation.
If one can perform the difficult movements in
the form, more typical movements used in self-
protection become that much easier. B

The full straight thrust is executed

6. Twelve o’clock strike down – strike
straight down from overhead after
executing a high or inside block;
follow through with a straight strike
down, aiming at the forehead or the
shoulder bone of your opponent.
This technique, supported by the
solid structure of the pi stem, will
cause serious trauma, shock, and
bone fracture.

FEATURED WEAPON

This matched pair of

short hard whips
is small yet practical. The rods
and guards are made of a heavy
brassy metal that is blackened
with a dark protective coating.
The brassiness of the metal is only
visible on the high wear points of the
rods. Each rod is hand filed, and close
Length: 19 ¼” Weight: 1 lb. examination reveals that this was done
without a lathe. The guards are circular
with a small inner ring hand-carved into the
Possibly late Qing Dynasty (1636–1912 CE) or
rod side of each one. The handles are made
Republic of China period (1912-1949 CE) from two pieces of darkly-stained wood – a
cylindrical piece that comprises the grip and a
small rounded piece that serves as the pommel
cap. These are also hand carved as they are not
quite radially symmetrical. The center of pommel
cap reveals a small divot, which may well be the tail
end of the tang. The balance point is almost at the
center of the weapon lending credence to this theory
because the handle wood is lighter than metal so if it
was empty, the balance would pitch more forward. It’s
a beautifully matched pair. Despite the unevenness of the
handmade construction, these pieces are perfect twins and
feel well balanced in the hands.

Master Ted Mancuso found these whips in an antique store in

a southern Californian Chinatown antique shop about a decade
ago. The shop owner had no idea what they were and sold
Master Mancuso the pair for under a hundred dollars.B

KUNG FU WISDOM

Jin gou kai jin yun

䠁⤇䮻䠁䙻
By Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng

Jin (䠁 1st tone) means ‘gold’ or ‘golden’. Gou (⤇3rd tone) means ‘dog’. Kai (䮻 1st tone) means ‘open’, ‘begin’ or ‘start’. And
yun (䙻 4th tone) means ‘luck’ or ‘fortune’. This can be translated simply as ‘Golden Dog begins golden luck.’ There actually aren’t
that many idioms about dogs in Chinese, so this is a general reference to 2018, the Year of the Dog. The inscription to the left reads
Wuxu nian, yi yue (ᠺ4ᠼ1ᒤ2༩1ᴸ4). Wuxu refers to the date, the 5th of 10 celestial stem and the 11th of terrestrial branches,
and nian means ‘year’. Yi yue means ‘first moon’ or January. The characters to the far left form Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng’s
signature.

Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng (⎲䠁ⴋ) was the cover master on the March+April 2003 issue of Kung Fu Tai Chi.
