haolin Kung Fu encompasses a wide spectrum
of different styles. Nowadays, most people
think of bald robed monks from the original
Shaolin Temple on Songshan mountain range in
Henan, China. Shaolin’s warrior monks began
touring the world and disseminating their Kung Fu in the
mid-’90s, and over the last two decades the Kung Fu of
the Shaolin Temple of China, also known as Songshan
Shaolin Kung Fu, has spread exponentially. However,
with over a millennium-and-a-half years of history, there
are many other styles that originated at Shaolin Temple,
distinct from what the monks promulgate. These styles
rightfully bear the name. For several decades prior to
Shaolin’s globetrotting monks, Bak Sil Lum was the
dominant style representing Shaolin outside of China.
Bak Sil Lum (ेቁ᷇) literally means "Northern Shaolin"
in Cantonese. Kung Fu enthusiasts who were around
before the first Shaolin monks left China know Bak Sil
Lum. It is a traditional style of Kung Fu that upholds
fundamental strategies consistent with the principles
held sacred by Songshan Shaolin Kung Fu, yet untainted
by the acrobatics of Modern Wushu.

Justin Ma. Ma is a traditional Chinese
archery enthusiast who has become a
leading American exponent of Chinese
archery in just a few years. He is
also already very familiar with the
Chinese martial arts world. He was
a member of the 2001 and 2003 U.S.
Wushu Teams which competed at
the World Wushu Championships
in Armenia and Macao respectively.
After Macao, Ma retired from
competition but kept active in the
Wushu world, first as a representative
judge for the U.S. at the 2005 World
Wushu Championships in Hanoi and
2006 World Junior Wushu Championships
in Kuala Lumpur, and later as a Tournament
Director for the 2006 US Junior Wushu Team
Trials and the 2007 US Wushu Team Trials. But
after 2007, he left the Wushu circuit and moved on.
“I realized a part of my soul would always be missing
until I could return to a martial pastime with strong
Chinese cultural roots,” reflects Ma. “At the same time, I
still yearned for a new pursuit.”
Thumb Rings
One of the distinctive qualities of Chinese Archery is the use of thumb rings. Almost every museum with
Chinese artifacts will have some thumb rings in their collection, often made of jade. However, jade and
semi-precious stone thumb rings were more about adornment than practicality because the material is
too smooth. Bone or other porous materials were more common for actual combat archers. Thumb rings
are used throughout many traditions of Asian archery such as in Korea, Mongolia and India. Thumb rings
give the archer a more secure grip on a knocked arrow, which is critical when moving on a battlefield or
shooting from horseback. The earliest example of a Chinese thumb ring was found in the tomb of one of
China’s many famous women warriors, Lady Fu Hao (died 1200 BCE ႖ྭ). Lady Hao was one of the 64
wives of King Wu Ding (1250–1192 BCE ↖б). She rose to become the most powerful Shang general of
her era with some 13000 soldiers under her command. When her tomb was unearthed in 1976, it was

Jin (䠁 1st tone) means ‘gold’ or ‘golden’. Gou (⤇3rd tone) means ‘dog’. Kai (䮻 1st tone) means ‘open’, ‘begin’ or ‘start’. And
yun (䙻 4th tone) means ‘luck’ or ‘fortune’. This can be translated simply as ‘Golden Dog begins golden luck.’ There actually aren’t
that many idioms about dogs in Chinese, so this is a general reference to 2018, the Year of the Dog. The inscription to the left reads
Wuxu nian, yi yue (ᠺ4ᠼ1ᒤ2༩1ᴸ4). Wuxu refers to the date, the 5th of 10 celestial stem and the 11th of terrestrial branches,
and nian means ‘year’. Yi yue means ‘first moon’ or January. The characters to the far left form Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng’s
signature.
