1) The official guide to PTE Academic - Pearson - 2012 edition

2) PTE Academic - Practice Tests Plus with key - Pearson - 2013 edition

3) PTE Academic Test builder - Macmillan - 2012 edition

The first 2 books are the official materials from Pearson.

The 3rd book (Macmillan Test builder) is the toughest material.

Complete all the chapters and mock tests in these books including the CDs

Before sitting for the original PTE-Academic exam, write down the 2 or 3 official mocks from
Pearson.

These mocks are the scored tests from Pearson. This will give you an idea about your level in PTE-A.

Tips for the following 20 question types under 4 different PTE-A "Communicative Skills":

Speaking

Try to give importance to contents, oral fluency and pronunciation.

1) Read Aloud (contributes to Reading also)

• Read faster. Don't read word-by-word. Read as chunks of words/phrases.

• Imagine that you are a news reader or conveying some message to the person in front of
you.

2) Repeat Sentence (contributes to Listening also)

• if the sentence is too big to capture all the words, try to capture at least 50% of the spoken
words.
• Don't get tensed, if you missed some words.
• Repeat faster as much as you can and at the same time, pronounce clearly

3) Describe Image

• Start with: "The given <graph / image type> represents ..."

• Try to extract key trends (maximum / minimum; decreasing / increasing; Steadily / Steeply;
Oscillating / Fluctuating; and so on..)
• Give your understanding in the final sentence like "In conclusion, ..." or "Overall, ..."
• Don't speak for more than 30 seconds. Try to start conclusion at 25th second

4) Retell Lecture (contributes to Listening also)

• Note down key points from the lecture

• Start with: "The lecture is about <topic>."
• Speak at least 4-5 key points from your notes.
• Give your understanding in the final sentence like "In conclusion, the speaker mentioned
that ..." or "Overall, the speaker suggested that ..."
• Don't speak for more than 30 seconds. Try to start conclusion at 25th second

5) Answer Short Questions

• Answer in 1 or 2 words
• If possible, use the article: A, An or The
• If you really don't know the answer, try to give the relevant answer by rephrasing the
question itself
• Anticipate different questions with image, table, map and practice well accordingly

Writing

6) Summarise Written Text (contributes to Reading also)

• Use "Coordinating Conjunctions" - FANBOYS: For And Nor But Or Yet So

• Try to write a single sentence with 30-40 words or at max, not more than 48 words
• Try to use the phrases (key words) from the given text

7) Essay

• Introduction: 3 sentences
• Main Para 1: 4 sentences
• Main Para 2: 4 sentences
• Conclusion: 2 sentences
• Introudction should contain "This essay will discuss"
• Conclusion should contain "This essay discussed"
• Try to give only one main idea (at max, 2 ideas) in each main
paragraph
• Try to use "Conjunctive Adverb" (However, Consequently, Likewise,
Besides, Moreover, Additionally)
• Try to use "Adverbial Phrase" (For example, As a result of, In
contrast)

Reading

Read English novels, English Newspapers, Collocation list

8) Multiple Choice Single Answer

9) Multiple Choice Multiple Answer

• If you are not sure, don't choose the second option - Only 1 sure option is
sufficient

10) Reorder Paragraph

• Identifying the first sentence is very important here

11) Fill in the blanks - Drag Drop

12) Fill in the blanks - Drop Down (contributes to Writing also)

• This question type increases WRITING score as well. So, give more
importance to this

Listening

13) Summarise Spoken Text (contributes to Writing also)

• Note down key points from the talk

• Start with: The speaker was discussing <topic>
• Try to cover as much as key points within 70 words in your own words (I
would suggest not using any template for this)
• Give your understanding in the final sentence like "In conclusion, the
speaker mentioned that ..." or "Overall, the speaker suggested that ..."
• After "Summarise Spoken Text", you need to answer 15-16 questions of the following types
within 20-22 minutes.
• *** So, keep your eyes closely on the TIMER. ***
• I would suggest concentrating only on the listening part rather than taking notes except
question type: 15 & 20.
• If your answer options contain any numerical data like year or values, then only you have to
take the notes during listening

14) Multiple Choice Multiple Answer

• If you are not sure, don't choose the second option - Only 1 sure
option is sufficient

15) Fill in the blanks (follow the speech closely and note down the words for the blanks)

16) Highlight Correct Summary (contributes to Reading also)

• Though the answer options are bigger to read, give importance to

this question type

17) Multiple Choice Single Answer

18) Missing Words - Beep

19) Highlight Incorrect Words (contributes to Reading also)

20) Write From Dictation (contributes to Writing also)

• This question type increases WRITING score as well. So, give more
importance to this.
• I allocate last 5-6 minutes for this question type which may has 3-4
sentences
• Practice as many sentences as possible before your exam day.
• I follow the strategy of writing first letter of each spoken words and
then frame the full sentence with my short-term memory. But this
strategy is not suitable for me in "Repeat Sentence"
