Unit Objective
4.2 Analyze religious beliefs, customs, and various folklore traditions of the Cherokee, Creek,
and Chickasaw, including: (C, TN) • Principal Chief • summer and winter homes • Beloved
Woman • recreation • clans • maternal designations

Lesson Objective

Content Learning Goals and Objectives

1. Given the knowledge of the customs and beliefs TLW will show images of the citizens of these
tribes.
2. Given the selected images, TLW show images and students will form paragraph summary about
each image they see (about the Cherokee, creek and Chickasaws people and beliefs and
customs).
3. Given a computer and Microsoft word software, SLW attach images to slides along with the
paragraph demonstrating their understanding of the Cherokee, Creek and Chickasaw people.

Student Participation

The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate their understanding of other people religious
beliefs, customs and traditions. Students provide visual representations and write reflections on the
characteristics of each tribe and their customs.

Technology Integration

Students will use the websites stated above as resources for information on Native American History. Microsoft
PowerPoint software will be used to type, format, and add images to the Cherokee and Chickasaw way of life
PowerPoint . Students, upon completing the activity, will save their work on a shared classroom removable disk.

Background and Rationale

● Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of each tribe by providing visual


representations and written reflections on their way of life.
● Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
● This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 4.2
● We will refer to the summary created here as we continue to explore “The History
Of America to 1850” We will also use our outlines for a unit on creative writing.
● I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the
objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not
covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
Procedures and Timeline

Introduction

● Begin by displaying images of the Cherokee and Chickasaw people and images of their lives on a large
screen display, overhead, or whiteboard.
● Provide some brief background information about the region, the tribes, and leaders.
● Follow this with a brief discussion pointing out how their lives were and how the people of their tribes
were impacted by their way of life.

integrated tribes
at the time of

colonization of
the Americas.
The name is
derived from a
Creek word
meaning “people
of different
speech”; many
prefer to be
known as
Keetoowah

Creek Creek,
Muskogean-
speaking North
American Indians
originally
occupied a huge
part of the
flatlands of what
are now Georgia
and Alabama.
There were two
divisions of
Creeks: the
Muskogee
settlers of the
northern Creek
territory; and the
Hitchiti and
Alabama, who
had the same
general traditions
as the Upper
Creeks but
spoke a slightly
different dialect
and were known
as the Lower
Creeks.
Chickasaw The Chickasaw
people moved to
Indian Territory
during the "Great
Removal," on
what was known
as the "Trail of
Tears." In 1837,
the Treaty of
Doaksville called
for the
resettlement of
the Chickasaws
among the
Choctaw tribe in
Indian Territory.
In 1856, the
Chickasaws, to
restore direct
authority over
their
governmental
affairs, separated
from the
Choctaws and
formed their own
government.
