Read the passage and answer the questions.
A turtle looks like a tortoise and has a very
long life too. However, [akan tetapi] unlike the
tortoise, it lives in the sea and not on land.
Turtles are sacred [dianggap suci] to the
Chinese. They believe that turtles can give
them long life [panjang umur] and prosperity.
[kemakmuran] They also believe that they have
some power [kuasa] over ‘sea devils’. So they
often set captured [ditangkap] turtles free on
important occasions. [peristiwa penting]
Recently [baru-baru ini] a ferry sank near Hong
Kong harbour and a big ocean liner, the Queen
Elizabeth, caught fire [terbakar] and sank too.
What caused these disasters? [bencana] The
Chinese believed that it was the work of angry
sea devils.
To prevent [elakkan] further disasters [melapetaka
berlanjutan] a rich man, Mr Ng, bought three
turtles and later released [bebaskan] them during
the ceremony. [upacara] “This will make the sea
devils happy,” said Mr Ng. “Then they won’t cause
any more disasters for the rest of the year.”
The three turtles were very old; each of
them was about three hundred years of age.
They had been caught by some fishermen in
the South China Sea. The fishermen had sold
them to Mr Ng for $ 53,000!
More than two hundred people attended
the ceremony. Most of them were fisher-folks.
Buddhist monks chanted prayers [melagukan
sembahyang] and wrote some Chinese words on
the turtles’ shells. Then the turtles were put
into three separate sampans. The people
prayed and stuck their joss-sticks [colok topekong]
into jars in the sampan. Then the boatman
rowed the sampans slowly out to sea. And
when they were some distance away from the
coast, they set the turtles free.
