creating incremental san copy sessions with emc navisphere manager
revision 0.1
synopsis
The following is a simple document with screenshots providing step-by-step instructions for
creating incremental san copy sessions on the EMC CLARiiON with Navisphere Management
Server. It is intended to be read in conjunction with the appropriate revision of the EMC
Navisphere Manager Help.

Creating incremental SAN Copy (ISC) sessions on the EMC CLARiiON with Navisphere is a
relatively simple process. The aim of this guide is to simply provide the screenshots that should
accompany the words in the Administrators Guide. This document assumes that:
SAN Copy zoning and storage groups are correctly setup;
Reserved LUN Pool space is available for the incremental copies;
CLARiiONs are in the same domain (or in a multi-domain view);
Access Logix is configured;
SAN Copy is licensed on the source;
The Source LUN cannot be a snapshot, but it can be a clone;
Only a CLARiiON can be a source for ISC.
These operations can also be performed via the Navisphere Service Taskbar and the naviseccli
interface. The screenshots used were taken on a CX500 running Release 26 FLARE and a CX4-
240 running Release 28 FLARE.
The first step is to right-click on the source array and select SAN Copy.

EMC have worked very hard to turn absolutely anything interesting that you would do in
Navisphere into a wizard-oriented activity. The welcome screen provides an overview of the
necessary steps to create an ISC.
At this point it is necessary to select the source LUN. If multiple storage arrays are being
managed through the same portal, it is quite obviously important to ensure that the correct
storage source is selected. Once this is done, the source LUN can also be selected.

The next step is to select a destination for the storage. Well, what’s a source without a
destination?
Right-click on the source storage and “Select Destination Storage…” in order to select the
appropriate destination for the copy.

The correct destination storage can then be selected from the drop down box.

Once the correct destination has been selected, the appropriate LUN can be selected as well.
Clicking on the arrow once the appropriate available storage has been selected will move the
LUN to the selected storage column.

Once the appropriate storage has been selected and moved to the correct column, clicking OK
will return you to the Session Wizard dialogue. At this stage it is recommended that the “Verify
Connections” radio box is ticked in order to ensure that the SAN Copy operation will proceed
without error. This will also identify any issues with SAN Copy zoning or LUN ownership.
If there is any problem with connectivity, a message such as the following will be displayed.

Once any connectivity issues have been rectified, the following success message will be
displayed. Click OK and Next to proceed to the next step.
Once the wizard has confirmed that the destination LUN is accessible, the wizard presents the
Link Utilization page. Choosing the correct link bandwidth is particularly crucial when copying
data over an IP link.

The Link Utilization page provides the option to configure the available SAN Copy bandwidth from
1.5Mbps to 2048Mbps.

The Session Names page lists the created sessions and provides the option to edit the throttle
and name of the session. Selecting the Session Name and clicking on the Edit button will provide
the opportunity to edit the name of the session to something more “human readable”, and provide
the opportunity to modify the throttle for the session.
Once the Session has been edited, the new values are listed, and clicking Next will progress the
wizard.

Hooray, you’re almost there. A Summary page is displayed from which you can confirm that
you’ve setup the session correctly. A Back option is provided if any values need modification.
Once you have clicked on Finish, a Success dialogue screen will be displayed to communicate
the success or otherwise of the wizard’s activities.

The next step, obviously, is to start the Incremental SAN Copy session. But that’s the subject of a
different document.
