2 . 1 6 Vol. 2 Sub clause 2.3.2.2 Piling contractor offer an alternative Piling works shall be (as
option to the conformed design driven prescribed in the tender) of driven
cast in situ piles. After considering the cast in-situ piles only.
Geotechnical report and the low SPT
values in the upper section of the soils,
a revised design option to install a
permanent circular hollow section steel
pipe pile (CHS) is recommended. As
per the piling s/c, installing the piles
using the conforming method driven
cast in situ will certainly have an effect
on the integrity of the pile due to the
weak upper elements of the soils.
Having much experience in driven cast
in situ piling in this type of poor ground
condition it is normally recommended to
use a permanent lined pile to prevent
any defects in the upper portion of the
pile. When extracting the tube when
installing driven cast in situ piles the
upper portion of the pile as the potential
to have necking within the monolithic
column due to the poor soil condition in
the upper section. Kindly confirm for the
same.

Fugro understands that this report will be used to facilitate formulating recommendations for
the foundation design of the planned structures. Information provided herein may not be
relevant if the purpose for which the report was prepared or the Client’s proposed
development or activity change.

2. SITE DESCRIPTION

2.1 Location
The proposed M project site, is located adjacent to Gulf petroleum oil terminal, which is
approximately 10km from Fujairah city along the Khor Fakhan road in Fujairah, United Arab
Emirates as shown on Plate 1

3. GEOLOGY

3.1 Regional geology of Fujairah

The solid geology of Fujairah is covered by Miocene-Pliocene and Quaternary deposits. The
bed rock geology of the Fujairah comprises of ultramafic and mafic igneous rocks of late
Triassic and Early Jurassic opening of the Neotethys Ocean. Coastal zone deposits of the
eastern seaboard include raised beaches and sabkhas, locally overlain by board, low angled
alluvial fans issuing from the main wadis.

The rocks of the early crustal section of the ophiolite were formed at around 96 Ma (Dilek and
Flower, 2003). Magma from the deep in the mantle moved upwards along conduits through
the upper mantle, melting orthopyroxene in the process and leaving behind a network of
refractory dunite veins (Nicolas, 1986). The magma collected in the magma chambers where
layered gabbros and high level gabbros of the lower ocean crust were formed. Magma raised
from the magma chambers, through vertical fissures produced the sheeted dyke complex and
was erupted onto the ocean floor as pillows basalts.

During the Quaternary, there has been a complex interplay between fluvial, aeolian and
marine processes, driven principally by climatic changes associated with high latitude
glaciation. A more humid climate in the eastern Quaternary led to the deposition of the coarse
alluvial gravels in many of the wadis and the development of extensive alluvial fans.
Fluctuations of sea level during this period deposited the marine raised beach deposits during
the high sea-level stands.

The coastal section of the Fujairah sheet is made up of a system of coastal barriers, and
beach deposits (recent and older). The marine deposits comprise typically of shelly, well
sorted carbonate beach sand, forming a variably sloping bank into ocean. Terrigenous
material is a locally important component, where black, heavy –mineral-rich sands are typical.
The sediment consists of medium to coarse grained, shells and ooliths with a considerable
lithic component (Thomas et al., 2006).

first 3.00m depth and every 1.00m intervals for the rest of the depth and change in strata to
the rock head. Samples obtained from the SPT were preserved for classification and
laboratory testing.

SPT’s were conducted in accordance with British Standard BS 1377: Part 9: 1990, “Methods
of test for soils for civil engineering purposes”. SPT ‘N’ value, number of blows and penetration
achieved for each 7.5cm were recorded and are presented on the borehole logs. In very dense
strata, SPTs were terminated after achieving 50 blows, and the total penetration was recorded
where less than 300mm.

On encountering refusal, rotary coring technique was adopted

4.5 Sampling, handling and transporting of samples

4.5.1 Soil sampling

Soil samples collected from SPTs were retained in sealed, plastic bags.

4.5.2 Rock sampling

Boreholes were advanced through overburden strata using a top drive, hydraulic, wireline
rotary drilling system capable of drilling in excess of 100m with PQ size double tube core
barrel. The PQ core barrel was fitted with diamond drilling bits and produced a core of 85mm
in diameter. In highly fractured rock shorter core runs were drilled (0.5m) in order to optimise
core recovery. Flush pressures and rpm were varied judging from the strength of the strata,
to ensure core washout was at a minimum. In competent rock, coring length of 1.5m was
adopted.

Fresh water was used as a flushing medium to facilitate drilling and to flush out cuttings.

Core samples were transferred from the core barrels to purpose-built plastic and wooden core
boxes and consecutive core runs were separated using labelled core spacers.

4.5.3 Handling and transport of samples

The procedure for handling and transporting samples was the following:

Report No. PU-18-0037-NE-03-01 Page 4 of 14

GEOTECHNICAL FACTUAL REPORT
Geotechnical Investigation for Seepage Water Disposal Pipeline, M Project, Fujairah – UAE

• Upon retrieval, split-spoon samples were measured for the length of sample recovered
and preserved in airtight plastic bags.
• Samples were labelled to include date, borehole number, sample number, and the
depths from which the sample was obtained.
• Rock core samples were placed inside core boxes with each sample and each core
run separated by a plastic or wooden spacer with depth marked on it.
• Core samples were wrapped with Polyethylene wrap to preserve moisture content.
• The core boxes were transported upon completion of each borehole from the drill
location to Fugro laboratory in Dubai.

4.5.4 Handling of samples at laboratory

The procedure for handling the samples at the laboratory was the following:

• Core photography on all samples using DSLR camera was used to record permanently
the unaltered appearance of the rock.
• A colour strip chart was used to serve as a reference to check the accuracy of the
photographic production of the rock core colours.
• The core boxes were transported upon completion of each borehole from the drill
location to Fugro laboratory in Dubai.
• Laboratory scheduled were generated by Fugro engineering geologist and approved
by the main contractor prior testing.

4.5.5 Logging
Soil and rock core samples were logged and described on site by experienced geologists.

The descriptions of soil and rock samples were carried out in accordance with the following
standards:

• BS 5930: A2: 2015 “Code of Practice for Ground Investigations”,

• BS EN ISO 14688 Part 1 :2018, “Geotechnical Investigation and testing- Identification
and classification of soil: Part 1: Identification and description,
• BS EN ISO 14688 Part 2: 2018, “Geotechnical Investigation and testing- Identification
and classification of soil: Part 2: Principles for a classification.
• BS EN ISO 14689 Part 1: 2018, “Geotechnical Investigation and testing- Identification
and classification of rock: Part 1: Identification and description,
• Clark and Walker, 1977: Technical note on proposed scheme for the classification and
nomenclature for use in the engineering description of Middle Eastern sedimentary

5. LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory testing was undertaken on selected soil and rock samples obtained from all
boreholes. Laboratory schedules were generated by a Fugro engineering geologist and
approved by the main contractor prior testing.

A summary of the laboratory test results performed provided in Table 5.1. Results from the
tests have been used to confirm the visual classification of soil and rock undertaken during
site logging to confirm borehole logs and stratigraphy. Laboratory test results are presented
in Appendix B.

6. SITE CHARACTERISATION

6.1 General subsurface conditions

Three (03 nos.) boreholes,BH-40, BH-41 and BH-42, were drilled to depths of 35.0m below
ground level. Ground elevations at explored locations vary from +4.74m FMD to +4.99m FMD.

The SPT N-Values range from 12 to 50 (i.e. medium dense to dense) and are plotted against
elevation and presented in Plate 4. The quality of natural rock varies from fair to good and the
RQD% vs elevation is presented in Plate 5

A summary of the subsurface strata encountered at each borehole location is presented in

Table 6.1 and full detailed layer descriptions is provided in the individual borehole logs in
Appendix A4. A geological cross-section for this area is presented in Appendix 3, where a
notable feature is the lateral and vertical variability of sand layers between locations.

Groundwater levels during drilling activities are highly influenced by the daily base activities
and drill cuttings. Accordingly, groundwater levels during drilling activities should be used with
caution; since they are not representative of actual groundwater conditions at site.
Groundwater levels should be verified with the use of available standpipe piezometers prior
to construction. Tidal levels and seasonal variability should also be taken into consideration.

Remarks on Sedimentary Rocks*

Granular cemented rocks vary greatly in strength,
some sandstones are stronger than many igneous
rocks.
Bedding may not show in hand specimens
and is best seen in outcrop. Only sedimentary
rocks, and some metamorphic rocks derived from
them, contain fossils.

Calcareous rocks contain calcite (calcium

carbonate) which effervesces with dilute
hydrochloric acid.
